Yeah there’s a whole argument against creating truly specialised players, so for example developing an u15 to the exact specifications of a senior team centre back. Changes in the game are inevitable, so a player developed to meet the challenge of long throws that were in vogue a few years ago would essentially be useless in today’s game. Plus teams risk becoming very one dimensional. Whilst there’s a general idea of how the game is progressing (more passes, more movement etc.) it’s an in exact science.
I know from bits I’ve picked up from the FA, teams are working far more to a general national framework for players than people seem to realise. As you say, in reality we are bit further down on the pecking order than we realise. It feels like we develop technically good players, but with a lot of other parts missing.
One thing that pleases me, is the progress of Onyango. We seem to be fast tracking him. He has a great physique,a nd while he's not there yet, you can't just create a lad who's 6 ft 3 at 16/17.
