Everton Youth Teams Thread

i think that might be barkleys main problem, he just seems a bit dim.

....it's a difficult one, remember young Rooney coming through and how relatively articulate he is now. I wouldn't think Rooney was academic as a youngster but he has a fine footballing brain. Some of the most academically qualified people I know are useless when it comes to doing things.

I was at the game

Evans works really hard always wants the ball made good runs down the channels
Always looking to pass forward
and wasn't scared to try and take players on though he lost the ball a few times
He did impress me so good signs

I was really impressed with Connolly who play left side CB
I didn't realise how good he was in the air. He must have won 90% of headers

Thanks that's a great report. From my vast knowledge of Evans gained from watching clips of his goals and assists I'm struck by the fact that he was always playing straight up the middle and always in front of goal when needed. All 3 goals were scored from inside the 6 yard box and his goal against Rhyl was smart thinking - get ahead of defender so if the ball comes across I'm in the right place.

Connolly seemed to burst on the scene from nowhere scoring I think 3 goals for England U18s in two matches from left back. I got the impression that in the last two England games he played left midfield, may be wrong, but left centre back is another position. I thought initially he was going to be the next Garbutt, bombing down the left from left back , but who knows. It once again reinforces the great work our Academy coaches do with these guys in terms of developing versatility.

I must admit though that pleasing has it has been to see the likes of Connolly, Ledson, Kenny, Davies, Walsh , Yates, Williams etc develop, there was a niggling thought that we were getting good at developing "back six" players - players with potentiallly that something extra like Evans and Dowell bring a sparkle to your eye.

Yes Connolly seems to play in a few possitions

I know a lot of European clubs rotate their young players to get them used to different possitions

I'm sure all the British clubs do this now

Like ledson has played infront of the back 4 and attacking midfield and as a number 10
Walsh also has played different midfield possitions

Tom Davies came on last night and played in a front 3
When I always assumed he was a defensive midfielder and i think that's where he'd played for England
But when ledson went off he dropped back to that possition

As an example, I remember reading an article a wee while back that looked at youth football in Germany. I think the focus was on Thomas Muller and looked at Bayern more generally, and the author remarked on the focus on intelligence and academic performance at the club, and how this translates into smart footballers.

You sense there's perhaps something we can improve on.

That's something Southampton do. Not sure whether we do.

Jordan Thorniley was last season's U18 captain so he must be well regarded by the club. At 18 his next step was either a loan or regular U21 football. Stockport County play in the National League North , the one below the Conference or is it National League ?, so that's quite a tough ask for an 18 year old, you wouldn't imagine he'd be able to play it out from the back too much. Equally I would assume that those who make these decisions think he's physically capable , good luck to him.

Coventry City boss Tony Mowbray stepped up his bid to get Everton’s Matty Pennington back on loan when he went to watch the defender turn out for the Toffees’ Under-21s last night.

The 20-year-old defender, who was voted the Sky Blues Young Player of the Year after an impressively consistent loan at the Ricoh Arena last season, helped the Premier League’s development side to a comfortable 3-0 win at Rhyl. Mowbray made the long trip to North Wales to see the player make his come-back to action as he returns from a serious ankle injury that cut short his stay at City.

Pennington, who Mowbray has publicly said he would like back in his squad, came through 60 minutes and is likely to feature in up-coming games against Southport and Tranmere. He penned a three-year deal with the Toffees last month but could still look for regular football to aid his development.

Really I'd like him to play in the Championship next season. If it has to be league One thought it should be Coventry since he did so well there last year.

Me too although bit like Garbutt being certain of game time may be worth trading an easier league.

Given Mowbray travelled all the way to watch the team perhaps we are lining up some other loans to Coventry as well?

Wouldn't be surprised if it was a different player he was watching. Had a look on the Coventry forum and they're mixed between wanting Pennington back because he was one of their best players and thinking that they need attacking players much more than an upgrade at CB. It could maybe be Henen or a different forward that he wanted to see.

Henen will go to a Championship club.

Could be watching someone like Dowell or an attacking fullback in Connolly.

I'd like to see Pennington given the chance to step up to a Championship club.
