Everton Youth Teams Thread

It would be interesting to hear about Evans. Is he highly rated in the academy ?
Is he physically strong as Rooney was at 16 or small and slight ?

Antonee Robinson also seems to be a name that is appearing on the radar. He went with the first team squad to Asia and last night scored from left back in the under 21 game, another youngster I would like to know more about

The players need games in order to progress. There was something like 30 games in total for the U21s league, nowhere near enough for players to develop and progress towards a first team place. Players need game-time to hone their skills, hence why we loan them out. It isn't about winning at the youth level but instead about player development, and the u21s league doesn't do that adequately at the moment.

22 games in the league apparently. I can't find any stats for the players in terms of appearances last season.

Seems likely then that Evans is the 'number 10' that Martinez was talking about when he said there's one in our academy but he needs a few years before he can get close to the first team.

I was at the game last night
Thought Evans did well
He's tall looks over 6ft
But slim which is understandable at 16

As dowell was on the pitch aswel
They both sort of interchanged possitions from wide to Central
Evans works really hard always wants the ball made good runs down the channels
Always looking to pass forward
and wasn't scared to try and take players on though he lost the ball a few times
He did impress me so good signs

I thought dowell looked good to but also a little weak
He's still only 17
He finds some great possitions on the pitch and is always looking to pass forward, sometimes maybe looking for the killer pass to much
He's shooting was a bit weak
I wonder if sometines he thinks to quick for some of his team mates

I thought Everton set up a bit too defensive with ledson playing the Barry role splitting the 2 CB's
And Williams and grant alongside him
Though grant scored in the 2nd half I didn't think they got forward enough

The odd time ledson went forward he looked good

I was really impressed with Connolly who play left side CB
I didn't realise how good he was in the air. He must have won 90% of headers

2nd half Everton made loads of changers, but played some great one touch stuff
This was a lot to do with Walsh who had a good 30mins

evans is tall, athletic and quite skinny but thats normal at 16. hes obviously highly rated to be playing quite a bit ahead of his age group.
robinson was injured quite a bit which is why he was probably under the radar. think he actually plays for the american under age teams.

Think you might be right. The 30 number was including cup games and that international u19s friendly competition on reflection.

And I've got a feeling that it was actually quite rare for a player to play in the majority of those. It wasn't a huge workload, and I suppose even then, the key would be to play against players that are slightly better than you are as opposed to your peers.

Another thing to bare in mind is the mental side of things. I've lost count of the number of talented players we've brought through that have failed to make it more for mental reasons than anything talent related. From Frank Lampard to Christiano Ronaldo, there are no shortage of good examples of the importance of knuckling down and working hard, but a lot of talented young English players think they've made it when they get that first contract.

Instilling that work ethic must be the biggest task of the youth development process I'd imagine, as that's probably the biggest requirement for crossing over from talented junior to talented senior.

thought walsh was our best player on saturday against glenavon until he went off with a knock.

As an example, I remember reading an article a wee while back that looked at youth football in Germany. I think the focus was on Thomas Muller and looked at Bayern more generally, and the author remarked on the focus on intelligence and academic performance at the club, and how this translates into smart footballers.

You sense there's perhaps something we can improve on.
