Everton Youth Teams Thread

They're playing tonight apparently, maybe Junior and Kenny will get their first game. Apparently Wigan are quite short on fullbacks so hopefully Kenny can get a good amount of game time.

.....interested to see how the youngsters do at Wigan, little surprised they have gone there following reports that Browning had a 'bad experience' at the club. Presume it can't have been so bad.

From Wigans Twitter feed it looks like they both started the game tonight, apparently a match report will be posted later. Wigans keeper Lee Nicholls pulled of some good saves apparently, might be worth keeping an eye out for him, he's a Huyton lad, came through their academy whilst Roberto was Manager there, he's 22 now and should be first choice this season.

New management since then.
Would've preferred Kenny at a championship club but hopefully that'll come in January for second half of the season.

Did he have a bad experience? I thought they were happy with him, he just struggled to adapt a bit because he's shy.

Perhaps the only thing I was critical of in our Youth set up last season was the consistency of our loan
system, it really did appear to be hit and miss. Pennington at Coventry was a big success, but there were other odd ones like bottom of the table Conference clubs, Kennedy not really getting many starting games at Hibs. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wonder if George Green had had his "last chance" earlier in the season at a club not fighting relegation then it may have been easier for him. Kenny is one of the most promising right backs of his age and every season is now key in his development so we need to get these loans right .
The disruption caused to the U21 team by the loans was another factor we didn't get right last season. I know the mantra is its all about performance and not results but with the talent we have we shouldn't be going into the last few games trying to avoid relegation. Winning games at this level does wonders for their confidence, you can hear it in the interviews with the likes of Kieran Dowell talking about their current winning streak. We have an exciting pool of youngsters at the club, combining good loans with a highly competitive U21s will be key this season.

The players need games in order to progress. There was something like 30 games in total for the U21s league, nowhere near enough for players to develop and progress towards a first team place. Players need game-time to hone their skills, hence why we loan them out. It isn't about winning at the youth level but instead about player development, and the u21s league doesn't do that adequately at the moment.

Isn't that Joe Royle's job? To bridge the gap between 18 and first team?

Yep, I've always found it odd that the clubs don't sort out the U21 league to make it more competitive and more of a development league. From what I read Man U tried to play a competitive team most of last season with a view to monitoring their progress at home. I disagree in that around 30 competitive games should be enough for youngsters at this age with time in between for them to work on their skills. And that's partly my point with the loan system if players need 30 games per season then nobody got that on loan last season ! Matthew Pennington clearly benefited from his loan, but he only played 25 games for Coventry and he was our most successful loan out.
Yes that's Joe's role and while it's hard to be critical of a club legend I honestly don't feel the loan system worked as well as it should last season.
