Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yep, I've always found it odd that the clubs don't sort out the U21 league to make it more competitive and more of a development league. From what I read Man U tried to play a competitive team most of last season with a view to monitoring their progress at home. I disagree in that around 30 competitive games should be enough for youngsters at this age with time in between for them to work on their skills. And that's partly my point with the loan system if players need 30 games per season then nobody got that on loan last season ! Matthew Pennington clearly benefited from his loan, but he only played 25 games for Coventry and he was our most successful loan out.
Yes that's Joe's role and while it's hard to be critical of a club legend I honestly don't feel the loan system worked as well as it should last season.

...if lads aren't getting games out on loan it might reflect they are not quite up to it. Regardless of the division, it is a big step up to open age footy.

I disagree a bit - more often it reflects that the (loaning) clubs have got perfectly acceptable players in that position. they have to take a gamble with a loanee, and not every club is willing to gamble with their league points. A loan player has to be a clear advantage for them to take that risk, and that's a tough call for any player. It is rather an act of faith.

....Wigan say they have options to extend the loans of both Kenny and Junior, 'it's up to them to impress'.

Perhaps the only thing I was critical of in our Youth set up last season was the consistency of our loan
system, it really did appear to be hit and miss. Pennington at Coventry was a big success, but there were other odd ones like bottom of the table Conference clubs, Kennedy not really getting many starting games at Hibs. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wonder if George Green had had his "last chance" earlier in the season at a club not fighting relegation then it may have been easier for him. Kenny is one of the most promising right backs of his age and every season is now key in his development so we need to get these loans right .
The disruption caused to the U21 team by the loans was another factor we didn't get right last season. I know the mantra is its all about performance and not results but with the talent we have we shouldn't be going into the last few games trying to avoid relegation. Winning games at this level does wonders for their confidence, you can hear it in the interviews with the likes of Kieran Dowell talking about their current winning streak. We have an exciting pool of youngsters at the club, combining good loans with a highly competitive U21s will be key this season.

The worst one was loaning lundstram to Blackpool! Don't think he was ever good enough for us but loaning him to a basket case club might have ballsed his whole career up.

Correct me if I'm wrong but this is Evans' first 3 games with the 21s. Anyone know what his reputation was in the younger teams? Seems to be adapting brilliantly.

I remember Evans coming on as sub for his first game for the U21s against Spurs in one of the last games of last season , can't recall if he played any others . He was certainly creating an impact for the under 18s , and catcherintherye highlighted him in this thread but was wary of saying too much about an u16 player. Our young players are our brightest spot at the moment , though as ever we need to be realistic at this age. Regular appearances for the U21s , good run for the u18s and games for England u17s seem reasonable targets for him this season, although Ledson managed an end of season bench appearance for the first team at a similar age .......
