Everton Youth Teams Thread

As I joked earlier, it can be hard to tell Butterfield and Price apart on the pitch from a distance, both similar size, 6 footish?, and quite thin. Butterfield wore the 8 and was the more defensive of the two , sticking a leg or a tackle in. It’s always hard to tell as they switch positions of course , but on occasions I’d say he was the defensive base of a diamond, then it’d switch to Butterfield/ Price being the two central mids. I know we encourage the youngsters to play in different roles and not pigeon hole them in one position so it may change next time . Certainly for me Butterfield‘s play was closer to Price’s style than any other players. It was Butterfield‘s first start so he did well and lasted about 65 mins , replaced by Cannon or Hunt , I can’t remember.

For the last 20 mins Isaac Price came into his own, getting on the ball more with his trademark through passes to set things going , we’d changed formation a bit and it suited him more . He played the full game and was still going strong at the end, which is very encouraging, he’s looking more composed and mature the more game time he gets at this level.

A mention for Thierry Small too. I’m more and more thinking he’s not going to be a full back. He obviously has defensive frailties you’d expect of a 16 year old, but when he’s on the ball he just wants to power forward out of midfield , take people on , shoot or pass. It could be argued that’s what you want in a modern full back, I just think with his pace and power he’ll be played further forward. It was his fine run to the line and cut back that created our goal.

I've watched the game back, so a few thoughts, specifically on the above 3.

I thought Butterfield did very well for a full debut. Seemed to be given the 6 role, which i never easy and I thought he did it well. Positioning was good, won the ball back well at times, used it quite simply. Perhaps he was playing in himself a bit, but has a lot of the fundamentals there, and a decent size about him. Looks like he will keep growing too. A bit of the Joe Williams about him.

Price you are right to say got better as the game slowed, which is the sign of a good players. Seems to have a bit more about him than Butterfield and is more comfortable on the ball. Like a lot of good players, he has a picture in his head when the ball arrives and just ticks it over very easily, and has a good range of passing. He did well as well.

Finally Small, yes it's hard not to get excited about his power and pace. I have a theory that our issue with the academy is we don't produce enough big, physical players. We did have a big focus in it, but moved away from that. We produce lots of neat and tidy, honesty, disciplined footballers who will make careers in the game, but not enough who may have that 1 raw ingredient that gets them in to the premiership. Overall it's great for the lads, but you can never sell them for much money, so it's not massively effective.

Onyango and Small are a break with that. Onyango is huge. Small is powerful and quick. For all of the commentators wetting themselves over Sterling, he is 5 years older than Small and I though Small gave at least as good as he's got with him. Sterling looks a powerful strong 21 year old too, and Small conducted himself well. I was very impressed with him, and has that ingredient of power and pace say a Danny Cadamateri had.

Rafael Garcia starred as Everton Under-18s beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in the U18 Premier League (North) at USM Finch Farm on Saturday.

The promising young forward struck his first league goal in almost two years midway through the first half, having had a lengthy lay off with injury.

Charlie Whitaker added a second soon after, which would prove to be the decisive goal despite the visitors halving the deficit 10 minutes from time through Callum Kavanagh.

The victory means that Paul Tait’s side leapfrog today’s opponents into fifth place – Now just one point behind fourth placed Wolves.

Middlesbrough inflicted the early pressure in the game and the Toffees were struggling to play against the wind in the blustery conditions.

Afonso Lindo should have given the visitors an early advantage, but he nodded wide from point blank range after drifting in unmarked at the far post.

Skipper Jack Stott fired a dipping half volley wide from range and George Waits looked certain to put his side ahead but for a superb sliding block from defender Harry Hagan.

The visitors continued to pressurise Jak Stewart’s goal. Joe Ridley dragging an effort agonisingly wide of the far post this time.

But it was the young Blues who struck first on 26 minutes. Middlesbrough failed to clear their lines from an Everton corner and Garcia ghosted in to stab the ball home from three yards.

Garcia proved instrumental once again just minutes later, setting up Whitaker for a second Toffees goal. The playmaker confidently drilled a well-placed finish into the bottom corner from eighteen yards.

Whitaker nearly added a third just before the interval, but his glancing header flashed wide of the far post.

Henry Popple pulled off a wonderful flying save midway inside the second half to deny Toffees skipper Sean McAllister adding his name to the scoresheet.

Boro started to impose themselves on the game in the late stages and they were rewarded when Kavanagh finished from close range after waltzing through the Everton defence.

Kavanagh threatened to equalise in the dying embers of the game, but Hagan was there again to block the strike with a last-ditch tackle.

Everton Under-18s are back in action on Wednesday night against Wigan Athletic in the FA Youth Cup (7pm).

I’m assuming that’s Emilio Lawrence getting his first chance.

He’s an under 15 striker from Manchester who we managed to get ahead of City and United, both of whom desperately wanted him, when he was 9.

IMO, he’s the best striker in the country for his age.

I popped something on Lawrence a few weeks back on here, didnt know about United but had heard of the City influence. Also know Liverpool were gutted to have missed out on him, and see him as one of their big regrets.

Any ideas why he selected us? An under 15 playing with the 18s is some going.

Have you heard much on Isaac Heath as well. He is the other one, along with Lawrence who very positive things have been said about.

Quite sad really , our home game , Boro produce 5 mins of highlights, we do our usual 1 min with the same annoying music .

It's a tough one because whilst it's good to win the FA Youth Cup does it really feel as good if you draft in players that have already moved up a level.
Understand that argument but the FA youth cup is a great trophy to get your hands on, so why not play your strongest eligible team and give us supporters and the club a bit of a lift, if we get through this round we will certainly need our best players v Man. City in the next round, I’ll bet City will play their best team, they love silverware!!

Yeh it's great to win but can't say I'm all that fussed about a youth cup. More important to develop the players.
