Everton Youth Teams Thread

At this point I really hope
Hello mate just back from work/a holiday this morning!

Whenever I have seen Evans he looks a very talented player. He was tall, a strong runner and agile. Comfortable in carrying the ball well, good vision and an eye for a goal. He has also looked good with both feet. He could well be the mercurial "number 10" in the youth ranks Martinez was referring too.

His age group is not as strong as the year above, but he was the captain of it. He has also been getting game time ahead of some very good older players.

As for comparisons it is hard to say. His career path to date is quite similar to Ledson. He is playing well ahead of him age and excelling in doing so. For Dowell and Walsh even though they are both very talented they didn't excel in the way Evans has done as under 16's for the under 18's. A lot of this though, is down to physique. I imagine Evans will end up being about 6ft 1 or 2 and is a strong athlete.

He probably doesn't possess the leadership qualities Ledson has, but he does have a wow factor when you watch him. Probably the most striking midfielder we've had since Barkley.

I would also say, that the player I have been referring to in the under 16's last season but not naming was Evans. Harrington is another to watch in that age group. There are obvious safeguarding issues at play when discussing under 16's. They are still children and haven't left school so it would be wrong for me to have speculated much beyond what I did. There is also the difficulties that the club cannot sign them down to contracts as easily so everything is kept hushed.

His performances in the under 21's have been really good, and unsurprising really given how he'd performed leading up to this season. Definitely one to keep an eye on. I hope that gives you some more to go on @LinekersLegs ?

Cheers catcher, that's a great write up on Evans. Our u18s have done really well in the last two seasons so it will be interesting to see how they do this year particularly as at least three who could play, Evans, Yates and Davies are getting game time for the u21s .
Who gets loaned out or into the first team squad will impact the U21 s and possibly the strength of the U18s. It was interesting to see Dowell coming on yesterday, and there has been much speculation on who Roberto's " 4 players from the U21 s ready for first team squad" are . Galloway, Browning look nailed on , maybe Dowell and Ledson the other two with short term loan outs thrown in?

Thanks @catcherintherye , hope you had a good holiday. Besides you are there any other forum members who routinely go to Finch Farm and follow our academy throughout the year?

I understand Everton's policy about discussing scholarship athletes and I think the reasoning behind it is very sound. That being said I am always interested in following the "minor leagues" and prospects of my teams, but I haven't found too many websites that focus on this. I feel like I know most of our major prospects but it is very difficult to get a feel for them through tweets and the odd highlight video. Would you mind (this is open to anyone on the forum who knows our academy well enough) To post a ranking or a blurb about our top 10 (ish) prospects. I would find it very interesting and informative on who to look out for. Also do you know any good websites that track academy players progress?

On twitter @YouthAcademys do a reasonable job of keeping track of the club moves and appearances of some of the higher rated players and sometimes provides links to articles discussing them. @garystonehouse does the England youth match reports and link to a lot of the associated media so you'll find bits and bits about say Davies or Yates from him.

Everton has some very good young defenders coming through the ranks.

In two-three years time, Jagielka has retired and maybe Baines is over the hill.
We have Coleman, Browning, Stones, Garbutt and Galloway (and maybe Pennington and Kenny) What will the lineup be?

"Following their catostrophic financial loss due to paying for their new ground and Sky going into Administration,Everton have announced that after selling all their first team players they're now debt free. Newly appointed manager Duncan Ferguson said " Aye, times have been tough but we've got a fernominal group of youngsters and I'd like to thank ManUre for loaning us WayneRooney as part of the Lukaku/Barkley deal and also Big Nev for coming out of retirement help us. The team for our first match against Roberto Martinez's WiGan is : Southall, Kenny, Browning, Galloway, Connolly;Ledson ,Davies; Walsh, Evans, Dowell; Rooney"

Yes it was ok thank you mate, had to do a bit of work too unfortunately so not much time for the internet.

I think you are correct that there isn't an awful lot written about under 18's football and there could be something of a gap in the market there. I would be happy to write you an overview of our best talents. I'm not sure 10 would be a sensible number though. The best youth team I remember in recent times was United in 92 who brought through 6 and another couple played premier league football (Gillespie + Savage). If we get 2 through per under 18's team (ie 1 a year) we will have done brilliantly. So any article stating up to 10 players would have to have that disclaimer.

There don't seem to be many websites that track progress. I think clubs try to keep information on a lockdown basis so it would be challenging to get information.

I can DM the blurb if that would be easier?

@catcherintherye it does mate, thanks very much for the info. He definitely sounds like the attacking midfielder that Martinez has been dropping hints about, good to hear he is two footed as well.

Hope you had a great holiday!

Yes, I suspect he is. Dowell is in around the first team now so is hardly "a few years off". My feelings are he is referring to Evans who around the time of him making that comment was starting to excel in the under 18's.

You are welcome. Yes a majority of our under 18's are now playing for the under 21's. I can't remember a time when so many were and it is a very positive development. It is great credit to Unsworth who appears to have bought into the need to promote young players and the likes of Sheedy who have encouraged this as well as Martinez/Royle who are actively looking to get young players out on loan to vacate the spaces.

To put into perspective, on top of the 3 you have mentioned, Dowell, Walsh, Connoly, Donuhue, Hunt would all have been eligible for the under 18's. It will be really interesting to see if they drop down and play in that competition.

Our approach is slightly different to other teams. I know United take the under 21's league quite seriously, and try to keep a strong team for it. The same goes for Liverpool (to a lesser degree). I worry about the under 21's league though and sides will increasingly use younger players in it and it will not be competitive. Why it doesn't have more games (it's something daft like 24) is nowhere near enough. They need to bite the bullet and allow teams to enter competitive teams into the football league structure.
