Everton Youth Teams Thread

Everton Under-18s boss Paul Tait saluted his players’ “tremendous commitment to the Club” after they were edged out 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion in a breathless FA Youth Cup quarter-final at The Hawthorns.

Everton reached the last eight with exceptional away wins over tournament favourites Manchester City and Chelsea, who between them had won the cup in eight of the past nine seasons.

In a high-octane and tightly-contested battle at West Brom, the Blues hit the front through Stanley Mills on 62 minutes.

The Baggies instantly levelled through Rico Richards, however, and Zac Ashworth arrowed in the winner 19 minutes from time.

Tait believes West Brom’s greater experience was an important factor but was eager to pay tribute to his team’s work-rate and desire.

“The lads gave everything,” Tait told evertonfc.com. “They ran, they chased and showed tremendous commitment for the Club, as they have throughout this cup run.

“West Brom had a lot of second-year scholars playing and, with us still being a younger team, I thought that told in different areas of the pitch. They did have a lot of power.

“But I’m so proud of the players for the run they’ve been on. They’re still learning and a lot of them can play in this cup next season.

“The lessons they’ve learned in this cup run can be invaluable for the rest of their careers.

“And everyone’s got to know the players on this cup run. A lot of Evertonians will have watched them and I’m sure they will be keeping an eye on them in the future.”

Everton looked well-placed for a spot in the semi-finals when Mills clinically rifled the Blues ahead just after the hour-mark.

West Brom were level within two minutes, however, and – having exerted consistent pressure following the equaliser – hit the winning goal on 71 minutes.

Tait added: “I thought we panicked a little bit when we scored, and we gave them a goal back too early. That’s something we can look back on.

“We got in front and, if you’re a professional player who has been in the game for a long time, you know you have to get in a solid shape for the next 10 minutes and don’t give any goals away. “

Everton pressed for an equaliser in the game’s final stages and had strong shouts for a penalty when substitute Rafael Garcia appeared to have been felled in the area.

Thierry Small then fired a daisy-cutter fractions wide in stoppage time.

“We had that chance with Thierry, which flashed across the post, and we could’ve had a penalty,” said Tait

“We just ran out of a little bit of luck, which you need in cup ties.”

....it often happens when you come through a massive cup tie in early rounds that it’s like a final in itself. Beating City & Chelsea was like 2 cup finals.

Performances have been as much about attitude and perhaps the quality mainly lies in defensive positions. I guarantee every Everton player will recall this game every time West Brom is mentioned for the rest of their lives.

Not sure if we’re seeing a future Everton PL star here but if we are, i suspect it’ll be one of the CBs.

We probably missed our senior players like Price and Onyango tonight.

It's been a great run either way.

....agree he was the stand out, he looks a potential Rolls Royce.

Yep Reece Welch was certainly our best player, which probably sums us up , needed a star further forward. Oh well it was a good run , and the majority of that team will be back next season in the Youth Cup.

Is Welch getting caps for England youth still -- i seem to remember he was in a few squads before ?

Any other noteworthy players in the u23s / u18s ?

Sounds like both full backs + Welch + both centre mids are the most promising?

I couldn’t name you a professional footballer ever that came through the West Brom academy.
They get alot of there lads pinched at about 16ish.
Izzy Brown who was rated as one of the best young players in the country got pinched by Chelsea.
Morgan Rogers again who is highly rated even played a game for West Brom at 16 before City nicked him, niw doing well on loan at lincoln and rated by all at City.
Louie Barry got pinched by Barcelona at 15/16 too (now at Aston Villa)
Throw in Nathan Ferguson at palace who is rated but troubled with injury
Tyler Roberts at Leeds & Kemar Roofe has had a good career too.
Thats just off the top of my head

From yesterday Welch is the big standout to me. Small and Dobbin just behind too. Then Onyanga and Price as they are/were with the first team. Those are the 5 I'd be keeping the closest eye on.

Dobbin looks to have done really well in terms of getting his size up. As hes been a small/slight player before it could be a good mix of having that pace and ability with the strength.

Im still not 100% sold on small, he looks strong and powerful but not sure if that is all he has, he is obviously only 16 but if he moves up to mens football you need more than just those attributes as everyone is strong & powerful

Youre right on Dobbin, he looks to have grown a lot from when he first broke through at 16. Gone from being around 5 ft 6 to about 5 ft 10/11 and looks really powerfully built now. Hes clearly way off full fitness, but last night I thought he just looked levels above Cannon and Garcia even in his cameo.

Small is an interesting one. He just looks miles ahead of the rest. You have to also factor in, if he was born 3 weeks later he would be an under 16 and how far he would stand out as a result. He looks quick and powerful to me, and has a good left foot. I mean its by no means certain who breaks through, but they are the 5 Id highlight.

Small is the interesting one for me, I don’t think he will make it as a full back, full backs have to know how to tackle, jostle opponents in to going inside or out, cover their other defenders, Small does little or none of this at the moment. He does have speed, can beat a man and can centre the ball well added to a tremendous shot, I thought he would have and will make a much better winger than a full back, because a full back he isn’t.

Luckily for us this time round they all mostly play different positions apart from Onyango and price who play CM, one CB, one LB, one wide forward and two CM’s of which one is a box to box and the other more of a holding no6. Our previous “golden generation” Walsh, Williams, Davies, Ledson, Dowell were all CM’s, ok Dowell was an AM but the rest were all vying for similar roles.

It's very difficult to say at his age. The skillset for fullbacks has changed completely in recent years, if you'd told me 10 years ago that Ashley Young would play full back for United and England i'd have laughed in your face but it's happened. Alexander Arnold can't defend to save his life either. I'm not saying he'll end up at fullback, but there's really nothing particularly strange about him playing there with his skillset.
