Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yep Reece Welch was certainly our best player, which probably sums us up , needed a star further forward. Oh well it was a good run , and the majority of that team will be back next season in the Youth Cup.
That last bit is the key for me - West Brom were physically stronger than us, and a little bit smarter as well. Regardless of losing last night this run has been a great learning experience for the players and they'll go into next years competition with the knowledge that they knocked out the country's two dominant academies, City and Chelsea.

Youre right on Dobbin, he looks to have grown a lot from when he first broke through at 16. Gone from being around 5 ft 6 to about 5 ft 10/11 and looks really powerfully built now. Hes clearly way off full fitness, but last night I thought he just looked levels above Cannon and Garcia even in his cameo.

Small is an interesting one. He just looks miles ahead of the rest. You have to also factor in, if he was born 3 weeks later he would be an under 16 and how far he would stand out as a result. He looks quick and powerful to me, and has a good left foot. I mean its by no means certain who breaks through, but they are the 5 Id highlight.

I'd say in these times, and how hard it is to break into a Premier League team these days if just one breaks through from this group, its a success!

Moyes always used to work on the basis of 1 getting through every 2 years and i think thats a fair target.

Were we can improve though is if they aren't going to make it here is improving them and raising there profile to enable us to receive the best funds for them should we look to move them on, and not just release them at 23 when there contract expires

I think Chelsea in the last round were physically stronger than us also, i'm not a huge fan of just finding the biggest/strongest kid around as when they reach the mens game, they are in for a bit of a surprise

Small is the interesting one for me, I don’t think he will make it as a full back, full backs have to know how to tackle, jostle opponents in to going inside or out, cover their other defenders, Small does little or none of this at the moment. He does have speed, can beat a man and can centre the ball well added to a tremendous shot, I thought he would have and will make a much better winger than a full back, because a full back he isn’t.

i think its far too early to say that, to me those are the easiest things to learn as a full back and at 16 has loads of time.

Totally agree with you on that. I'm always wary of players who impress at youth level because of their physicality - that will apply to some of those West Brom players who looked good last night.

....it often happens when you come through a massive cup tie in early rounds that it’s like a final in itself. Beating City & Chelsea was like 2 cup finals.

Performances have been as much about attitude and perhaps the quality mainly lies in defensive positions. I guarantee every Everton player will recall this game every time West Brom is mentioned for the rest of their lives.

Not sure if we’re seeing a future Everton PL star here but if we are, i suspect it’ll be one of the CBs.
It's not like thebold days though eggs is it wear are 1970,s them consisted of many youth or then reserve players - does Carlo ever go to these games ? Like other top managers no - it's rare for n all clubs for youngsters to get a chance in the prem - Rooney - Kane etc are a rarity with the influx of foreign worldwide players now most clubs are all the same ......it's very hard for them to cut through and get a chance tbh - such a shame ......their potential is never fulfilled .......

....it’s not the same, Joey. I think there’s a number of reasons, not least because kids are more likely to play on their computers after school than kick a ball around. As you say, the market is more global so youngsters are being brought in from abroad.

i honestly don’t think it down to lack of opportunity, I’m a firm believer the really good ones will get a chance. Brands watches youth games and the most promising train with Ancelotti and the first team. I’m sure if Rooney was a 16 year old at the club now he’d have the same chance.

Yes welch and Campbell who is a year younger were probably the 2 best players for us tonight but both still made sloppy mistakes.

Have Brands or Ancelotti ever talked about Warrington?

I hope brands can get us a young wide player for u18s or u23s this summer, one thing we are really missing especially with Bowler not having a future.
Kouyate will be the only one around.
The Echo keep bringing him up time and time again (they have again today as an Allan replacement) at the start of the season they said Brands had his eye on him and a few weeks ago Ancelotti mentioned him in a presser. It seems like the echo have anointed him as definitely going to make it for whatever reason but them 2 keep getting name dropped in articles about him.

Agree on a winger though may be tricky given we can't shop abroad anymore until they turn 18. Not that we did much of that anyway

warrington is a decent tackler, decent passer and can get about but theres nothing outstanding about him.
i'd be surprised if he plays much higher than league 1 which is still a good achievement for him.

Yeah I'd go along with that. I think he'd do well to get that high there'd be no shame in it. Just don't think the echo are doing him any favours at all with the puff pieces when he's already 3rd choice in his position to two Lads a year younger in Onyango and Price. Only 2 23s appearances as an 18 year old turning 19 this year.

Everton Under-18s boss Paul Tait saluted his players’ “tremendous commitment to the Club” after they were edged out 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion in a breathless FA Youth Cup quarter-final at The Hawthorns.

Everton reached the last eight with exceptional away wins over tournament favourites Manchester City and Chelsea, who between them had won the cup in eight of the past nine seasons.

In a high-octane and tightly-contested battle at West Brom, the Blues hit the front through Stanley Mills on 62 minutes.

The Baggies instantly levelled through Rico Richards, however, and Zac Ashworth arrowed in the winner 19 minutes from time.

Tait believes West Brom’s greater experience was an important factor but was eager to pay tribute to his team’s work-rate and desire.

“The lads gave everything,” Tait told evertonfc.com. “They ran, they chased and showed tremendous commitment for the Club, as they have throughout this cup run.

“West Brom had a lot of second-year scholars playing and, with us still being a younger team, I thought that told in different areas of the pitch. They did have a lot of power.

“But I’m so proud of the players for the run they’ve been on. They’re still learning and a lot of them can play in this cup next season.

“The lessons they’ve learned in this cup run can be invaluable for the rest of their careers.

“And everyone’s got to know the players on this cup run. A lot of Evertonians will have watched them and I’m sure they will be keeping an eye on them in the future.”

Everton looked well-placed for a spot in the semi-finals when Mills clinically rifled the Blues ahead just after the hour-mark.

West Brom were level within two minutes, however, and – having exerted consistent pressure following the equaliser – hit the winning goal on 71 minutes.

Tait added: “I thought we panicked a little bit when we scored, and we gave them a goal back too early. That’s something we can look back on.

“We got in front and, if you’re a professional player who has been in the game for a long time, you know you have to get in a solid shape for the next 10 minutes and don’t give any goals away. “

Everton pressed for an equaliser in the game’s final stages and had strong shouts for a penalty when substitute Rafael Garcia appeared to have been felled in the area.

Thierry Small then fired a daisy-cutter fractions wide in stoppage time.

“We had that chance with Thierry, which flashed across the post, and we could’ve had a penalty,” said Tait

“We just ran out of a little bit of luck, which you need in cup ties.”

Is Garcia any good? Seems to win a penalty or foul every time he runs with the ball but never starts for the 18's.

You could pick the basis of next years YouthCup “squad” from last night‘s squad of 7 first year starters, Stewart in goal, Metcalfe, Quintyne on the bench , add in Price and Kouyate missing. Through in a couple of prospects currently Schoolboys and next year ..., we’ll knowing us probably a third round exit :).
It’s unusual that all 10 new Scholars this season have featured already, often 1 or 2 don’t get any game time in their first season or pick up in their 2nd season like Hughes and John.

I described Garcia somewhere using a term I got from rugby - he seems to be seen as a “ Finisher” not a “ Starter” . On Saturday he played 60 mins in his typical fashion, got himself booked within 5 mins, chased everything, harried defenders , had one shot well wide, a bundle of energy whos fun to watch who can change a game when he comes on , ......but there’s not a lot of composure and still a few buts about him.
