I'm sure he wanted the 1st team manager job at one point but probably realises now it's unlikely to happen, so as you say maybe director of football.
Possibly succeeding brands at some point which would make all his admirers on here ecstatic lol

Maybe Brands saw something in him and suggested that is a path he might consider instead of just wanting to be a manager. Handing him the Academy role might be a see how he goes with it.

I actually think Unsworth could be a really really good DoF one day provided Brands takes him under his wing so he gets contacts in the game and understands negotiations etc.

Yes, he has his flaws being he does get too loyal to players at times but he genuinely would just want the best for Everton and I think he would plan long term accordingly. He's uncovered some gems alongside his scout Hoyland, notably DCL but also Branthwaite and Gibson (and maybe Lookman) also wanted the likes of Brooks and Hirst. He clearly has an eye for talent and has always fast tracked our best youngsters like Gordon, Small and Astley

Since the DoF doesn't have a say in the manager that's another obstacle cleared.

We could certainly do worse imo

We aren't a serious football club though. It doesn't look like that's changing any time soon either DoF is a glorified head scout/transfer guru. It's more an unknown than anything, Unsworth (and Brands for that matter) could pick out the next Pep or he could be Senor Benitez's number one fan its impossible to know. I think it'd be interesting if he does step down as 23s boss if he gets to pick his successor what route he goes down. Tait or Ebbrell would be good choices given they both have the highest level coaching badges on offer for an internal promotion. Tait also done great work for 18s. Otherwise he could look outside like the other lot do having had Critchley, Gerrard and that Swansea manager on their books previously.

No big surprise to see him leave although I guess it's slightly odd that he wasn't mentioned when we announced our expiring contracts.

Tyrer and Leban seem to be much more highly thought of anyway, so his prospects didn't look too good with us. Good luck to him!

had a lot of hype this kid couple years ago. Seems his stock has fallen a bit and it’s now more if than when. Very glad he has signed on.. gives both parties a bit more time
