Everton Youth Teams Thread

Everton have been unable to agree a fee with Wigan Athletic for the signing of James Carragher.

Negotiations have hit a stalemate and the Blues are now looking at trying to sign Dutch defender Luuk Kluiters for their under-23 squad.

Kluiters has been on trial at Finch Farm recently and Everton are attempting to obtain a work permit for the 18-year-old from AZ Alkmaar.

But hopes of signing Carragher - who played for Wigan's first-team in their pre-season friendly with Oldham Athletic on Saturday - have faded with rounds of talks between Everton and the Latics concluding without a deal being agreed.

The Blues are now working on the paperwork to bring Kluiters to the club after his trial but there remains some uncertainty if the player will meet the required criteria after changes to the rules following Brexit.

Didn't want to sign that filthy red pundit anyway

Should just get both.

Something odd going on. Back in May when our interest was known it was said he was out of contract this summer, which sounded like the normal end of a Scholarship at 18. In which case we sign him as being out of contract and a Tribunal sets the fee if one can’t be agreed. So it should have been a done deal , but if he played for Wigan last Saturday it suggests he’s still under contract. We’re hardly short of defenders but If he’s any good just get the deal done or leave it to a tribunal to set the fee.

Not that promising?
Not for me. maybe he's a late developer but everything I've always heard and seen was he was never a top player so it certainly wouldn't excite me. Wigans academy got picked apart when they nearly went bust and he was left alone which is a red flag. They hardly rolled out the red carpet to get him to stay as he still hasn't made his pro debut.

I can't envisage a future for him at Everton that is anything other than being released.
He joins and he's immediately behind Welch, Astley, Branthwaite, Gibson at 23s (though the latter 3 probably go out on loan again) and the 4 senior centre halves. That's without the Dutch kid joining and Campbell kicking on in the 18s. Just seems we are signing him as a body to have in the 23s at a time when we also have Anderson, Hagan and Kristensen who also play there kicking about at the same age. Our youth scouting is normally very good but this one stinks of "he played well against us so let's sign him"

The frustration I have, is how many bad games has Gordon had compared to say Bernard, or Iwobi?

When were bringing in a poor player in Demarai Gray to play on the left it tells me that Gordon (despite his remaining 4 year contract) isnt considered good enough.

Strange we gave him a long term contract then preferred to play failures in front of him and now sign more failures to do the same.

Did Carragher play against us in the Youth Cup, cant remember him doing anything? The player who stood out was Sean McGurk in midfield, Leeds have nabbed him now. Picking up your point if three CBs do go out on lone as is quite likely , I’m not convinced Hagen certainly and maybe Kristensen are competitive at U23s yet , and at CB Anderson is just “ok” . Campbell is coming on nicely but still only 16 and surely (!?) we haven’t started negotiations with the Dutch kid without being pretty sure of a permit ….It does seem like we have a potential glut of CBs , but it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out and just how serious we are about Carragher and needing another CB.

To me if a highly rated youth player is available out of contract then we get them. They can be flipped for more money down the line.
