Everton Youth Teams Thread

While the game is quite 1 sided, it is worth noting we are missing a number of the best under 18's. Mills, Price,Welch, Kouyate, Jagne, Onyango & Campbell are all fairly regular under 23 players (which is a good thing). Most of the players today are either 1st year players, and I think we actually have 3 or 4 under 16's playing. So we do just look smaller than Liverpool's players, who are older (which at that age makes a big difference).

They also recruit heavily at that age. I could be wrong, but I don't think a single outfield player has been brought in from us, but they will have 4 or 5 lads who have been expensively (the number 4 looks good).

At a more equal level (the 16's) we recently defeated them quite heavily. But a mixture of pushing a lot of players up, and perhaps not the investment into the 18's team due to a ban leads it to be more 1 sided.
They had 1 under 16 starting and an under 16 they bought / took off us on the bench although he probably would have started, he’s just been out injured a lot recently.

We had 1 under 16 starting 1 on the bench also.

At under 16 level, there’s no much between the teams IMO. We did beat them recently at the PL cup but they did not send their strongest squad whilst we did.

Ok mate, that's useful context. I thought the left back 2nd half today, Lawrence and Sheriff were all 16s, wasnt sure about the number 16.

If so, we certainly had a younger squad tha them, which showed.

I have certain concerns about the display to be honest. I'm not sure why we are not more aggressive in recruitment. I also think, in all honesty that was a long way from our best 11, and really only Butterfield and possibly Mallon would fit into that. I was actually a bit disappointed in Butterfield Metcalfe today. Thought they could have impose themselves.

What worries me is we seen to lack an ethos. Under Moyes we would always be underdogs on players and names against, but would generally outwork them and make it harder for them to play. We looked a soft touch today. Lost a couple of goals of set peices. I'm not sure what we are trying to do.

To some extent, it's a reflection of the turmoil at the managerial level. However I'm not sure how much of an excuse that is, as we have had a DOF for over 3 years, and Unsworth in post for over 5 years. I'm not sure we really see any benefit of continuity from either.

All I could say is the team is younger than Liverpools, but it didnt have much discernible style. I'm also not sure for lads like Sheriff (who did ok) his 1st touch will ever be good enough.

Some questions to be asked for sure.

Sorry…I did mean to write we had 2 u16 starting and 1 sub, it’s just a typing error.

I can’t edit in now though.

I looked online for the ages of the U18's but were a few without an age/bday on Transfermarkt. Not sure how accurate that site is though for ages.

Funnily enough it had Francis Gyimah for them as a 30-year old German lol

That’s right yes, we’ll get there in the end.

They’re the 3 under 16s for us anyway.

Davidson and Laffey were their 2 u16s although they’re both are very old within the u16 age group.
Maynor Figueroas son came off the bench for them and pretty sure he's a U16

Edit: Maybe even U15 depending on the article you read

…..it’s worth noting for those who suggest the problems are at U23 level.

It's a fair point. I think we need to invest more at an earlier stage, and have a clearer identity. We seemed to have lost our way once Wauldron left.

That being said, the under 23s have 6 or 7 under 18s lads in it. The best Under 18s are not in the under 18s.

If we put out today, Mills, Welch, Campbell, Price, Onyango, Kouyate I suspect we win the game quite comfortably.

You also have to factor in, that clubs like Liverpool may also push lads up, but have far bigger squads. I'm sure I read somewhere they had 70 pros on their academy and 23s.

For me though, I do want to see a clearer identity of what we are trying to do at 18s level. I dont think we made it hard enough for them today. We were too nice. We are not that nice at under 23s level, and play the game like it matters. We just seemed too nice today.
