Everton Youth Teams Thread

I think people are generally realistic in how far away from regular starting spots most of the youngsters are , it’s the frustration from the original post “ the dross of senior pros we have, who have consistently let us down already this season.” that we all feel. Sadly throwing in a bunch of underprepared youngsters who are not ready won’t solve the problem. People are just frustrated. I enjoyed the U23s game the other nightpurely for what it was , a bunch of our young players putting in a decent, workmanlike performance against a well matched Spurs team. Patterson just needs help to adjust to the PL, Branthwaite was surprisingly sloppy on occasions , Dobbin is similar to Gordon two years ago, bursts of pace, class and skill with a bit of patience needed as he develops. While others are not ready, I do like the principle of getting them training with the first team on occasions.
Given that Branthwaite was taken off at the same time as Patterson, I'd guess he's still not fully fit after injury/illness.

I agree with regards to them 2, I just don’t with regards to them all.

Simms for me is never ever going to be a regular player for us in the premier league. Dobbin is some way away as is Warrington.

I like the look / sound the 2 you mention but the other 3 aren’t going to save us in a relegation battle right now.

I'd still have them ahead of the crap in the first team squad.

It's not on them to save us,but personally I'd be more fired up seeing Patterson, branthwaite, Dobbin Simms and Warrington starting or coming on and getting minutes ahead of Coleman, Kenny, Keane, holgate, rondon, Delph, and any of the other waste of skin senior pros, that has let us down season after season.

If Everton u18s beat Man Utd u18s on Wed 9th Feb at Old Trafford, It will be Leicester u18s we face as they just won 5-1 at Bournemouth - (The game was Live on Bournemouth Twitter)

But before then we face Derby twice the next 2 Saturday's with A midday day ko in both, 1st up we are away to them tomorrow, Derby in 7th are 2 points above us after playing 1 game more

Everton u18s Team (As ever TBC)

Nash, Tierney, Campbell, Quintyne, Samuels-Smith, Butterfield, Metcalfe, Lawrence, Djankapa, Okoronkko, Sherif
Subs Stewart, Jones, Jagne, Heath, Barker,
I know it's early days, but what's the quality of this age group like - anyone in particular standing out?

In bold (in my opinion)

nice one mate, don't recognise many names in the defence, but recall Lawrence and Metcalfe supposedly standing out at lower age groups - ofc it's never certain how they adapt as they move up.

@catcherintherye Is there a developing theme now that the decent enough footballers (Warrington, Price, Butterfield, Whitaker) maybe don't quite possess the necessary physical attributes to make the final step up to the first team? (see historically: Walsh, Dowell, Ledson, Williams)

Hi mate. That has certainly been a hypothesis I've had. For a long time we have built technically decent, hard working well drilled players, who will have decent careers in the football league, but ultimately not do much at the very top level. So it's a bit of a concern.

I think the latest crop are a little different, Onyango is 6 ft 5 already (and may even get to 6ft 6) which is enormous and there has been a big focus on him. I know Reece Welch is around 6 ft 3 having just turned 18 so again may get to 6 ft 4 hopefully. The 15 year old Sheriff who is very raw but is about 6 ft 2/3 at 15, so again will be massive.

Dobbin is really quick so again he sticks out a bit. So there might be a shift.

Metcalfe was one I mentioned 18 months ago,and is a terrific little footballer, but again it's a question of size. Lawrence looks to be about 5 ft 11, and has natural movement of a forward and thinks like a goalscorer. He is one who will probably end up well over 6 ft and I think is the best prospect we have (he is an under 16 remember).
