Everton Youth Teams Thread

There’s an interesting article in the SundayTimes today on David Weir , Brighton’s Technical Director , it mentions him actually going out to Argentina to watch Mac Allister before they signed him 4 years ago and the patient way they brought him on. We’re years behind. @Verbal Kint , great post , the article also mentions Evan Ferguson , it looks like they’ve sussed out Ireland too.
I would worry mate if we nobody at Finch Farm wasn't aware of Evan Ferguson, he played first team for Bohemian's at 15 in a pre season against Chelsea, Gavin Bazuna was the same, these two lads were slam dunks as they say.

No infrastructure for that kind of thing at the club I don’t think. Up until the Moshiri era it was just left to managers. Then since Moshiri came it’s just been chaos. Can’t even recruit for the first team let alone identify potential in kids from other countries

I can’t talk about how we work, but I know the RS have a pre-academy and academy (16 year old plus) chief scout, who both have that very role.

International roundup, Branthwaite called up and withdrawn from England U21, ISS called up to England U17, Price in the senior northern Irish squad, Cannon in Irelands 21s squad and Aled Thomas and George Morgan with Wales U17. *think* that's everyone.
Two more :
Zan Luk Leban: Slovenia U21 v Slovakia U21, Friendly (3pm)

Martin Sheriff: Netherlands U17 v Northern Ireland U17
Edit James Garner England u21s too

Nobody can talk about how we work because we don’t. The whole set up is goosed.

You’ve got to hope that Dyche is forceful enough to push for changes on this because, whatever people feel about his style of play up until now, he’s not stupid as a manager and he’ll know that if he’s staying for any length of time then the scouting/academy systems need a full overhaul.

Whether you agree with the man or his position or not this is currently Thelwell’s job as DoF . I’ve lost track of the number of changes Thelwell has made in the Academy/Scouting system , most of the appointments appear on paper at least to be people with good experience who’ve made a mark elsewhere. His biggest change of course was replacing Unsworth with Paul Tait.

Without going into a debate about Thelwell and his position, I really hope he succeeds in the changes he’s made but most of all I hope we don’t rip them up and go off in a different direction again.

From reading about other youth setups over the years...its also apparent that results (in terms of player development) and pathways arent achieved overnight.

Some may say its a 3 year job but it seems to take far longer than that for these things to bear fruit.

We could have complaints for 5 years but in year 6 (for example) there may be a consistent conveyor belt.

Very difficult to judge in the short term -- but as you say, the appointments seem higgly rated.

Yeah, but you almost forget Thelwell’s there because it feels like those changes are only on paper - there’s no end result apparent yet. I hope he succeeds too but I think it needs Dyche to back him and push for more change too. Maybe by asking for the Richarlison/Gordon cash to be spent on players 😉
