Everton Youth Teams Thread

We have no pathway. Why sign with us.

….always think it’s a bit of a nonsense anyway. You can give youngsters all the ’pathways’ you want but ultimately they take the next step if they’re good enough.

The exceptional scholars like ISS might be guaranteed a professional contract but that has always been the case going back to the old apprentice days. At the end of the day, the super talented will come through.

They are but take Price for example. He's talented enough for me to be given a shot, but there was no pathway, so now he's gone.

….he wasn’t given a chance because the manager didn’t select him. Managers pick their best players at the top level, you have to be exceptional to breakthrough & others were preferred to Price.

He might also have left because he was offered a lucrative deal elsewhere, it’s the way it is these days.

You would think with us having 1 left back in our whole first team squad, who is also of questionible ability, he should be training with the first team squad this summer!

Its just a shame we have someone like Dyche in charge who thinks he will need another 9 years rigorous first team training to get up to scratch

….from what I recall Dyche didn’t play Keane in the last game. Indeed, he preferred 2 CBs who are no longer at the club.

In the current contract system, youngsters will leave the club for a multitude of reasons.

He played him 10 games in a row, through multiple errors. Basically if he's not picking someone it doesn't mean they're no good.

You need that stroke of luck also!
Marcus Rashford is a good example of this, a decent enough prospect growing up, but he got his opportunity in the United first team based on a couple of injury's and the 2 centre forwards that were rated in the years above Rashford at the time (James Wilson was on loan at Brighton and Will Keane on loan at Preston) probably would of started the next few games! He obviously had to take his chance, which he did! But it is a massive swinging doors moment for the other 2! What if they had opted to stay and not go on loan? Would they of took that opportunity and it snow balled from there?
Would Rashford of got a little tired of having his pathway blocked and gone on several mixed loan and not had the scope to challenge the government during Covid?

I had a quick look at some past reliable usual suspects on Twitter and saw nothing. I posted earlier in the thread that with his 17th birthday in June I thought he wouldn’t sign until July, giving him a full 3 year contract if he does sign. I would hope that even we have sorted out all the details with him and there’s a clear contract waiting to be signed.

All opinions of course , Ive seen more of ISS for England u15, 16 , 17 s than I ever did of Small, plus his appearance in the u21 and Papa John , for me as a prospect he’s way ahead of Small at the same age. As you say , we wouldn’t want to lose him and the message it sends out if he does sign would be very positive.
I also thought he was much better than Small who good going forward but reliable as a defender. Up to now Small has done little with Southampton and has been loaned out to a couple of clubs without much success, I think it would be a big loss if ISS moves to another club, I hope he can be persuaded to stay although money talks and the Manchester clubs have plenty.

That should have : Small was good going forward but not reliable as a defender.

“ Pathways” for youngsters like ISS and Sherif can change from season to season , manager to manager. Apparently City are about to sign Gvardiol , 21, left sided CB who can play left back , ISS ‘s pathway if he goes to City will be difficult , unless he’s outstanding and CL quality.
