Everton Youth Teams Thread

I'm not massively convinced about that. Im not sure how many players they have massively improved through their academy, as we did with say a Gordon as a pro.

He will be one of many great young players, most of them at Chelsea dont really kick on.

But I maintain hes more likely to get first team chances here.

Sorry but you must have taken your eye off the ball.

Of course vast numbers of academy players fall by the wayside but last season in our squad coming through our academy and the majority joined before they were teenagers were:

James, Chalobah, Hall, Gallagher, Mount and Broja.

Of course. Cos we're a mess behind the scenes with no plan and change managers every season.

We give zero opportunities to play them in the first team. Few mins here or there or even the league cup.
You would hope the youth team set up would be independent of whoever is the manager - a pre-determined set plan for developing the maximum potential for the individual players. In the modern game coaching of youth players should focus on technical excellence and football intelligence ( learning how to play in different team shapes - not just the 1 man up front style we seem to be playing at the moment). Foreign coaches seem to focus on these aspects. Have we ever had a foreign youth team coach? I can't think of one - invariably we appoint ex players. "The school of science" seems to be a cynical joke.

I'll answer both posts in one mate.

The majority of them were blooded by Lampard, and were of very high quality at age 18, in all likelihood better than ISS. I would say all were better than Gordon.

Chelsea have a fantastic youth set up to 18, but have probably not brought through and developed players as well as we might have expected. This isnt a controversial view, a lot of Chelsea fans I know say much the same.

Maybe that will change under Poch?

But if I was a young kid, I wouldnt go to one of the top teams, as it's highly unlikely you get a regular chance in the first team. If I was ISS I'd be concerned that I stall, like so many others have.

However, I have heard Chelsea have offered him a huge wage packet, so hes probably made for life.

Chelsea academy offers a good route to senior football TBH, whether with Chelsea themselves or other clubs. They also get the chance to play and train with the best players of their age and work with then best coaches.
Guarantees him to stay in the England picture as well. Only have to look at how Dobbin, Welch and Onyango have fell out of their age groups as an example

Boyland has put out an article this morning that confirms ISS left because the club is absolutely desperate for any amount of cash right now rather than ISS walking out or planning on leaving. A desperate state of affairs for the club where the academy is suffering for the first teams sins. Much more damaging than even the academy ban was.

He also mentions the Small fee ended up being 1 million plus future incentives (that probably won't be reached now)

Shocking that. Does he specifically state that we didn't even offer ISS a Pro contract?

James and Mount were indeed blooded by Lampard the others weren’t that said not quite sure it matters who gave them their debuts

There is no doubt we could and probably should have bought through more in the past but as someone said elsewhere there is an huge number of ex Chelsea academy players earning a decent living and plying their trade at very decent levels.

Its quite interesting when you say about not going to a top team because the irony is and evidenced by looking at clubs squads the lower you go down through say the PL in particular the chances of a player graduating from their academies lessen significantly.

Just read that. It’s a pretty in-depth article which makes sad reading not just about ISS.

Thelwell gets a lot of stick around Maupay/ lack of signings, he’s made positive changes in the u21/Academy structure but he’s swimming against the tide if we’re now declaring open season on our young prospects to any club with money. I can shrug my shoulders and move on if the scenario is we lost our most promising youngster but managed to get £4 mill for him , a scenario where we are now opening the doors and inviting offers, as suggested, is dispiriting.

I mean we are kind of agreeing really, that Chelsea have fantastic talent but probably haven't quite utilised it particularly well.

As for the 2nd point, I don't know what measure you are using. Top teams spend huge fees on academies, so it's not a like for like comparison. But clubs like Brighton seem to give younger players a chance. Indeed until recently (and it may still be the case) no PL team had given more minutes to teen academy graduates than Everton. So I'm not sure thats true.

Chelsea are going very aggressively for players, and making huge commercial offers. I'm not convinced that means it will be best for their long term development. I always thought you messed the likes of RLC up. But to be fair, as a mate who's a Chelsea fan said, being a successful team is not always condusive with developing younger players, and over that time period Chelsea have been very successful.
