Everton Youth Teams Thread

Again. Ignoring the actual fugures and just saying stuff dosent make it true.

Gordon was a decent prospect, but only around the same way ryan ledson, liam walsh, nathan broadhead, ellis simms were. Pretty much abit like how we rate Dobbin now.

His attitude (over time) & workrate eventually got him to elevate above other youth prospects. Ancelotti didnt particularily rate him or like him (not sure which one) but he still used him, but only when he had too.

Gordon's opportunity came because one summer we only brought in Townsend & Gray, there was a spot availible. For him there was a lot of luck and good timing involved
Oh I agree, and have said this a few times about Gordon. Kieran Dowell had more natural talent than him but Gordon was the one who had the better attitude, applied himself, took on a personal trainer to build his body up etc, a lesson to all youngsters that talent alone is not enough.

Could be a very good set of scholars this next set of U16. Also just brought in Louis Poland from Liverpool, had a lad on trial from Norwich and I think someone mentioned about us bringing in someone from Portugal as a scholar

Gordon was our best prospect since Barkley imo. Deffinitely a level above Simms and Broadhead, and even Dobbin. Ledson and Walsh could have been as good, but they needed to be either bigger or that little bit better than they were to have the same potential AG did/does.

The fact that we had 7 u16/15s in the squad recently , including Poland, is a big step up from last season when few u16s featured until later in the season - not much to judge on I know!

I’ve often thought that Ryan Ledson was someone who was at an early age mature beyond his years and mature beyond his football ability . When he captained the England u17s to Euro success he was an outstanding captain, read the game very well but there was always something missing ability wise. As he got older others matched his game reading ability and he never really progressed to a level it was hoped he would.

….he’s still had a fine career in the game & seems the model pro expected in those early days.

On the serious side of things though, this is actually a really good point and something people outside of football don't really appreciate!

I listen to some decent 'lower league & amateur game' podcasts and read up on it a fair bit and the work & graft a person has to do just to have a (what we would all see as bang average) career requires a lot of talent, dedication & luck.

Sometimes success in football isnt being a Ross Barkley who isnt really going to want for nothing! But staying in football for a good amount of time, winning promotions, building foundations for later in life etc, it would certainly help to keep yourself more grounded

All it takes for someone to drop down the ranks is a coach or a manager at the age of 16 or so to not like you, or have a different footballing opinion to you for it to go wrong!

Then if you make a bad move (move away or don't move away from your local area) you can get ostracised and forgot about! You are also pretty much on 1/2 year contracts all the time, so if you have a family, your next move might be restricted within were you are based abd were you can commute too, as the teams down there don't put you up anywhere!

Ledson has done pretty well to have that consistency of 5 years so far at Preston

I think I read somewhere that a lot of young Irish kids are heading over to Italy now rather than England
The under 14-17 year olds have no option but to go abroad now, the Bundesliga have a few, a good few in Italy, Benfica are in the process of getting a lad from Cork City.

I see we have been linked with Sam Curtis from St Pat's (17 years of age) but City, Utd and Spurs are also sniffing.

….that’s a lengthy contract for a young professional and can only mean they like what they see. I thought there were a few signs from his pre-season appearances that suggested he might have something but it’s such a huge step-up for a striker because the skill set is so difficult.

From what I’ve seen, it wouldn’t take much for him to leapfrog Chermiti. I can see one of those two moving on loan next season.
