Everton Youth Teams Thread

I'd say young players won't look at those things but they really should. Problem you have is the status and wealth that comes with being at a Top 4 academy in this financial time; you might play a lot less games but you're likely on a higher wage. If players cared more about actually wanting to play and not their weekly pay cheque we'd probably see a lot more well-rounded academies in the country. Loftus-Cheek as an example had outgrown the U21's a few years ago but is still not really close to being a regular in the first XI, should he move? Almost certainly. Will he move? Unlikely I'm afraid.

It's a shame really but young players are maybe ill advised when choosing which academy to join & should base their decisions more on their future expectations.

There is probably also the case of for even though MK Dons Dele Alli & Brendan Galloway coming out of there acadamy there isnt a gaurentee you will get picked up down the line by a better club. You may be stuck at a club playing league 1 football for too long and regret turning down a better club in the past.
So do you take your chance when it arrives?

Secondly it shows the faith they have in Connolly that he wasn't shoved out of position to make room for Baines.
That made me smile in a perverse way in that at the end of the clip on Connolly's goal he run s back and Kenny is in the shot too looking like he's saying something. Given the OS can't be arsed doing commentary, when I first saw it I thought about doing my own :
" And I think we can just about hear what the two young defenders are saying to each other :
Kenny : " Great that Call, didn't know you had a right foot"
Connolly: " Cheers mate, wasn't bad was it. Who,s the old geezer they've given your right back spot to? He's panting a bit"
I would of course have finished on a positive note of " Kenny playing as a Centre half today shows his versatility and that despite his comparatively small stature he's considered capable enough to play there and hold his own at this level"

Very good! I think it is interesting though that Baines played in midfield. Connolly can play midfield too so putting him there is interesting. When Martinez talks of easing him back in he may now look to move him further forward. Who knows?

Baines actually put a couple of balls through with his right foot. And he looked comfortable doing it. I can't recall him ever using his right in any meaningful way in the past.

It's really tricky with young players, they need to be playing competitive football at the right age. Galloway is an interesting case in point. He obviously impressed massively in preseason to make the first team squad as he looked a sure bet to go out on loan. He has grabbed the opportunity handed to him with Baines and Oviedo put injured and garbutt on loan. What happens next season when Baines is fit and garbutt returns? If he is going to continue to improve he needs more than the odd cup game and under 21 football. If he can get a loan to a good level championship club and play centre back that would benefit him enormously.

Martinez and his backroom staff seem to be quite unique in their approach. The loans are mixed up with coming back to the club to get experience with the first team squad. Also seem to be happy to give players short term loans at a lower level to prove themselves rather thran putting them into a higher level were they may not play.

Be interesting to see what happens with the likes of Dowell once he's fully fit. Maybe a couple of games on the bench with the first team for experience then out on loan Netcom season? All depends on whether we sign a tone for left mid/wing I guess

And if Baines hadn't gotten hurt we'd be speculating about Galloway and when he would be ready. The answer was clearly right now, but without being given an opportunity we'd wouldn't really know.

You have to feel like Dowell and Ledson are the closest to becoming 1st team team regulars, if not in the side right away. Dowell might be there already if not for the injury after the pre-season he had.

Yeah agree about Dowell, he was on the cusp of the first team squad. With pienaar, issue and cleverly out and mcgeady being mcgeady he may well have gotten a chance in the early part of the season. Just goes to show that talent on its own will rarely be enough, every young player needs a little bit of luck to get their opportunity and then the determination like Galloway to seize it.

Ya if bainsey comes back going to be no good galloway sitting on the bench.loan deal to a championship or league one side playing at centre back might be the best thing for him.

I don't know about that. It would be nice to have a central defender / left back available on the bench. This no reserve centre back thing leaves me worried.

@catcherintherye, we got that brazilian lad to play RB, so i doubt we'd buy another one as well as him?

also i'm still a bit iffy with baines playing that role, i think besic has shown internationally that he's the perfect heir to barry within a couple of years. You also have mccarthy and gibson who can do it as well as of course ledson coming though. Few youngish lads there he's be holding back, especially considering he's still one of the best in his actual position in europe.

i hope we offer oviedo a new deal, think his versatility is exactly what you need in a squad of 25 - if we want to be european regulars.
