Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yep goalkeeper is one of those positions where you need the young player to be playing as much as possible.

If we could get someone like Dragowski (18 year old who has played 2 full seasons in Poland) and then get him settled in the UK and playing every week for someone like Blackpool/Preston for a season or two until he is ready it would be ideal.

Yeh I agree. It worked for the likes of Butland and Ben Foster etc. going out on loan to Championship teams of bottom Prem teams where they're very active it can only be beneficial. I think signing a foreign prodigy (Dragowski) and sticking him in the U21's might be backwards development to what he's getting currently.

Countless times this has worked to benefit the goalkeeper and parent club.
Hart was at Birmingham for 2 seasons
Butland had 2 or 3 championship loans
Courtois to Atletico Madrid for 2 seasons

The best option for a young english goalkeeper is to try and get at a club that has ambitions of promotion from the championship. That way you can get your first year at championship and 2nd year hopefully the prem without haveing to change clubs

Not easy though, need to find a top young keeper that is currently playing first team football in the lower leagues. How many of those are there?

......I have been posting about the young Southend goalkeeper for a while. Outstanding in the play offs, Southend turned down £1.25m from QPR even though his contract is up at the end of the season.

We were linked with David Button from Brentford at one point. And that Norwegian national keeper who went to Ingolstadt in Germany in the end. (Played twice so far this season and let in 6 goals, although Ingolstadt are a promoted team.)

Its interesting about our young Goalkeepers as I've sometimes thought we'd got too many in the 17- 20 age group but apparently nobody older than that who could challenge Robles . So for me the deficiency is in the +20 age, Liverpool for instance have a 22 year old on loan to Aberdeen , Ward, who is performing well, though difficult to say if he will be a PL GK. We do seem to be collecting young GKs , this is the list of those I'm aware of , and what I recall, there may be more, feel free to correct the info as I can't guarantee its all correct. :

Griffiths England u20
Hewelt , Polish but currently in an Ireland u20/u21 squad ...I think its him.
Stanek . Czech out on loan
O 'Laughlin - main goalkeeper for u18s
Aaron Jones Wales u17,sub for U18 not sure if he's played.
Ben Pierce - we got him from Man Utd youth.
Matthew Johnson - 1st year scholar , know nothing about him.
? Gray - another mystery GK who we got from Wrexham, was on sub bench for U18s and I think he's on loan at Colwyn Bay. Not even sure if he's a scholar or has any kind of contract.

So we have about 8 young GKs , seems to me our GK Coach should be able to develop at least one from that lot, but that would be long term and there is still the gap at 20 + years old..

connor hunt too?

Can add Connor Hunt to that list too. I just found it strange how we hear like "check out that Walsh/Dowell/Evans they're a special player" but I don't think I've ever heard that about one of our youth goalkeepers for as long as I've followed Everton. Surprises me as it's arguably one of the most important positions for a team.

sorry you posted before i realised

Has any Merseyside team ever produced a top keeper from their academy? Maybe I'm forgetting somebody but Simonsen at Tranmere is the closest I can think of.

Adam Davies (Barnsley) and Jaime Jones (Preston but ex-Leyton Orient) are the only properly home grown ones with a career in the game I can think of.
