Everton Youth Teams Thread

C Bates. Any views ?
Callum Bates has been training with the first team for at least the last two weeks, he’s in the squad mainly due to injuries in midfield, not as good or as likely to get mins as Armstrong is . I doubt he’ll get minutes today , but heh , good luck to him getting on the bench , he’s presumably responded well in training.

I would rather get kids some experience of the dressing room, team talks, tunnel, atmosphere, booing than have 2 keepers which is just daft

Hard to disagree, the only advantage I see with 2 goalkeepers is that at least a youngster gets to play for the u21s instead of warming the bench and not playing.

….i suppose that’s the case if they play on the same day but it’s a huge lift for a youngster to be involved even if there’s zero intention of getting game time.
As long as it's done with an eye to exposing them to/getting them used to being part of the senior set-up/matchday experience, and not just making up numbers for the sake of it.

….in a way, I see that as a positive at this stage because in his own age group he’s a stand-out on quality alone. Often it’s the biggest, fastest and strongest who shine but that alone isn’t enough as their peers catch up physically and they convert to open age.

I also think there’s plenty of physically slighter players in the top flight, including Foden and Palmer. In terms of size, in times gone by clubs would often look at a youngsters parents as a guide to what size a youngster might grow, I have no idea about Graham’s family but I’m sure he’ll grow and fill out a bit.

Let’s not forget he wasn’t found wanting playing open-age in NI. He reminds me of a Robbie Keane type although I get the comparisons with Rooney in how he picks up a ball and spins.
There was an interesting article in the athletic recently about Palmer. Apparently he was tiny as a kid and got to his current size quite late. Apparently it was not always certain that City would keep him on which seems outrageous to think of now

Which means Virginia rarely plays at any level of football, he has the makings of a good goalkeeper but looks like we will lose him for nothing when his contract is up next summer, If he isn’t selected when Pickford is playing badly, which he was before the last three games, then he won’t be picked unless Pickford is injured.

Virginia is 25, he's not a kid. He's a back up goalkeeper, most of them don't play at any level of football. There's nothing at all in Virginia's history to suggest he is anywhere near challenging Pickford, he did alright in the cups last season but thats the high point of his career.

Apart from his poor time on loan at Reading I think he has played well when standing in for Pickford over the last two seasons and I agree Pickford is not going to be dropped to allow him to play. My main point is that we might have got a very decent transfer fee for him before now when we will most likely get nothing for him next summer when the club is in need of any penny they can get!

He got dropped when he was on loan at Cambuur for a bloke who was Sunderland's back up keeper in league one - at no point would we have ever got a decent fee for him.

We’ll see how many clubs in England and Spain come in for him next summer if Everton don’t offer him a new contract, mind you it seems like you don’t rate him and won’t miss him if he goes, each to their own!

I reckon he's been available for sale ice at any point over the last 2/3 years to be honest and nobody's moved for him yet, so I 'm not expecting Real Madrid and City to start a bidding war if i'm honest.
