There’s an interesting snippet in the Echo that caught my eye when Loney came on “ The introduction of Cieran Loney around the hour mark caused Liverpool new problems as he and Morgan provided a physical presence up front with Graham and Clarke on the wings. “ Graham would be wasted on the wing but it’s great that he’s regarded has having that versatility that he can play there and is being given the opportunity to learn different aspects of the game.
It sounds like they switched to a4-4-2 flexing to 4-2-4 system , which is in line with what Mark Douglas wrote in his “ unprecedented access to FF “ comprehensive interview. He talks about the club deciding that rather than a fixed style of play they would be flexible , working on three different formations , 3-4-3; 4-4-2; 4-3-3 , that they learn in blocks across the season eg strikers are taught to play as a 9. , in a 2 up front, or in a three or four up top. I know the u21s have switched in and out of 3 at the back a few times, it’s not easy to do , I don’t particularly like it and they’ve looked really weak at times, but at least there’s an explanation as to why. It’ll be something to look out for at u18/21 this season .
