Everton Youth Teams Thread

How were Feeney and Holgate?

Did Holgate stand out at all? Wss thinking he could be back up to Coleman soon (in a similar way to Stones/Galloway/Browning playing full back).

Feeney played well, little ginger skinhead reminded me of a young Paul Scholes (except playing in defence). Still quite small physically so he's got a way to go yet. Had a shakey start but grew into the game.

Holgate did okay. Nothing spectacular. Didn't especially standout in the way Stones often does, but seemed quite solid/dependable and coped well when called upon.

Cheers for that, good to get feedback from someone at the game. I was saying yesterday that Davies would have made a big difference to our U18 midfield against their u18s , at 17 it's great to see him performing so well at u21 level. He's looked impressive in the DM role when he's captained England U18s and reminded me very much of Ledson at that level.

Thanks mate. Yeah, I remembered a few weeks ago how Hodgson had him headhunted from the Under 21s squad and allowed him to train with the England Senior team, and how the seniors were said to be really impressed with him. Today really reinforced that to me, saw what all the 'fuss' was about.

An excellent write up in the Echo of the way Joe Williams and Tom Davies dominated the midfield yesterday.

I must admit , Joe Williams didn't figure in my "Golden Generation 7" but he gets high praise from Unsy and apparently Roberto taking an interest in him and offering him tips. I've always seen him as a determined , robust DMF who would never shirk a challenge but perhaps lacking in subtelty , but he's obviously improving and doing something right. He's 19 tomorrow , so still young, but it shows just how all the youngsters need to continually raise their game to stay prominent.

..a long time ago I gave Joe Williams a shout on these pages after he played against Man Utd U21s and had a real battle against an international opponent. He ran out of steam and was substituted near the end but he just had something about him. He's the type of player every team needs.

Yep, agree with that, I can see him being in and around the U21s for the next few years just for the physical presence he gives. Trouble is our conveyor belt is moving along nicely, new ones are dropping onto it all the time and some will be dropping off into the "not quite good enough" basket . Being harsh , of yesterday's start team I had McAleny and Byrne heading for that basket , pushed out by Brewster, Broadhead and Donhue shining at U18 level and looking for U21 experience next season at the latest. Throw in Ledson, Grant, Henen enjoying good loan spells and competition becomes fierce for U21 places. I'm not sure if Joe will make it all the way, but local products like him and Tyias Browning bring something extra to the club with their great attitude.

......there's a good living to be made as a professional at every standard and the peppering of Blues in the lower leagues is testament to a fine youth policy.

You did yes, up against Anderson and I remember the post well. I have to think he will go to play at a similar level as Lundstram.

You can never really tell with young players though, outside of your Barkley/Rooney players. How they develop from 16-21 is very important. How far they physically develop too. I think his performance against Anderson said a lot about Williams though in terms of his mental outlook.

It was a really interesting interview by Unsworth really. If we look at them both separately.

Davies has really come on the last 12 months. It was noticeable in last season's under 21 match that when we were struggling at half time Unsworth through him on. He got the equaliser but more importantly he changed the flow of the game. He was able to get around the pitch, throw in a few big tackles and upset Liverpools rhythm.

He was the captain of his side but struggled to make the step up at first, like Walsh, Dowell and Donuhue did. But over time he slowly inched his way into the sides. His physicality really marks him out now, he's obviously worked very hard at that and I hope he continues to do so.

He has gone from being quite a slight lad, a neat and tidy player to being one that physically imposes himself on the game. Unsworth I think has noted the impact being involved with England has given him an added responsibility.

As for Williams arguably a more complex case. As a young player he was very highly thought of. Had he have been two years older and avoided our strong age group we'd have heralded him as a top midfield talent. He has been really unfortunate in that regard.

As Eggs has said he is a very unselfish player and happy to adopt the Carsley role. What i've also noticed is he has continued to grow and is quite a tall player now. Unsworth mentioning him growing must mean filling out, but he is a tall player that is important in that position.

It is high praise really. Both playing against Rossiter who is their next big hope and completely bossing him, despite being a year or two younger.

Just had a look on the 'Everton News' section on the Echo website.

22 separate stories.

1 of them is a prominent Liverpool U18s 2-1 Everton U18s match report.

None of them has anything on the Liverpool U21s 1-3 Everton U21s match yesterday.

Why isn't the U21s game covered? Significantly more people there at the game, and players with first team experience playing for either side.

Is it because Everton won so emphatically? Hmmm...

Yay, Everton TV starting to catch up with goals we've missed they've now got the 3-1 derby win up.http://www.evertonfc.com/evertontv/...lights-liverpool-under21s-13-everton-under21s
In fairness to McAleny that's a super ball taking out about 6 Liverpool defenders for Evans to score the first goal. You can see Evans starting off on the half way line behind McAleny when he gets the ball, so a fantastic run from him to get on the end of the cross. Connolly beats about 3 defenders to head home , and you can see him again on the edge of the penalty area before the 3rd goal, looks like he's got a "License to Roam". Such a cool finish from Dowell for the thirdafter good work by Davies.

Only a few more goals to see to catch up ,like Brewster's hat trick recently and 3 more from Connolly.
