I meant yesterday
They drew with reading 1-1
But can't find snything about the game or what the team was.
The 4 things that stood out to me from the mini derby were;
1) How much younger we are then Liverpool. Don't believe a word of the "pub reds" rubbish about playing a young team. Their average age was 20 whereas our teams was 2 years younger at 18. We played 5 players who are eligible for the under 18's (with 1 from the bench) they had zero who fulfilled that category. Alongside that we played 3 lads who are 17 and under again they had zero.
We have essentially put 6 of our strongest under 18's out against their reserves and wiped the floor with them. Think of the damage we'd have done had we played our under 18's against their on Saturday. It would have been another humiliation for them akin to the 5-0 drubbing we served them up recently.
2) Davies is becoming a very talented player. Against Rossiter & Chirevella who have done ok at first team level he looked a cut above. He is really developing nicely as is Williams. I'd rather have those two than the older Chirevella & Rossiter.
3) Evans is rated very highly. He played in the 10 and at times was a cut above. He is keeping Dowell out of Dowells preferred position which takes some going. Very excited about watching him, he has pace and is very direct.
4) Dowell took his goal very well. The little shimmy he does for the goal doesn't get the credit it deserved. It was a fantastic manoeuvre and completely left the Liverpool defender for dead. He has also really grown and looks close to (or above 6 ft now.
Feeney defended bravely. He is still a very slight lad and will need to fill out a bit. It is great testament to our academy though that he was given the chance to play at centre half in such a big game at such a young age. The easy thing to do would be to play him right or left back and use the more experienced Kenny/Connolly at the heart of the defence. I'm pleased they don't put the short term result ahead of the long term development though and allow him to play his natural position.
Connolly is also always impressive. Has a very good knack for getting a goal. While I know lots don't like him McCaleny did very well as well. he is an odd one. he produces performances like that, and like away at Swindon where you think he should be able to go and dominate league 1 or excel in the championship and it has never quite worked out for him on loan.
Anyway a great win really. Not just for the way we played and how we hammered them, but more for the manner we have done so for reasons I have said above. We have a team full of young scousers (8 of the ten outfield players) who are mostly under 18's playing against a reserve team and still trying to emulate the first teams style of play.
There was an article that mentioned the Liverpool win, ended with the then forthcoming game against Reading and showed the team that beat Liverpool at the end of it. As it was the usual half-arsed stuff it didn't say if it was the team to play Reading, but looking at the photos and the mentions players get in that Reading article Hewelt, Connolly, Feeny, Davies, Dowell , Evans and McAleny all played so they may have kept a winning team together.you need to check the opposition websites for info on games. dont be expecting our pathetic site to provide fans with basic news on our teams. doesnt give our line up though

Here's a longer version of the U21 mini derby, although it's from their point of view. Good to see the younger players thriving at U21 level though. Also no one seems to know how to pronounce Hewelt's name.
I have family who live right by that stadium but never been in it.Jon-Joe was really good at the back too. To be honest, they all played well.
It was so funny, the game was held at Saints rugby league ground, supposedly LFC U21s home base, yet when we scored, three quarters of the fans there jumped up/cheered.
......big one tonight, FA Youth Cup v Villa at Goodison. Don't want to tempt fate but surely we must have a shout given the form and talent in the U18 squad.
Feeney played well, little ginger skinhead reminded me of a young Paul Scholes (except playing in defence). Still quite small physically so he's got a way to go yet. Had a shakey start but grew into the game.
Holgate did okay. Nothing spectacular. Didn't especially standout in the way Stones often does, but seemed quite solid/dependable and coped well when called upon.
Thanks mate. Yeah, I remembered a few weeks ago how Hodgson had him headhunted from the Under 21s squad and allowed him to train with the England Senior team, and how the seniors were said to be really impressed with him. Today really reinforced that to me, saw what all the 'fuss' was about.
Its quite a tough tie for the 3rd round where there are a large number of lower league and non league teams - Villa are 3rd in the South u18 league so no pushovers. It looks like our best u18 players, Davies, Evans, Dowell, Feeny , Walsh , Connolly have played 2 games already in the past six days so they may not use them all tonight. Plus another u21 game scheduled for Monday so careful selections needed. I don't think Walsh started the U21 games so he should play tonight, Connoly doesn't usually play although eligible. It's a key competition though , so they need to get selection right particularly if Villa field a strong team using their young players who normally play up at U21.......big one tonight, FA Youth Cup v Villa at Goodison. Do we have any young goalkeepers in the youth set up that look like making the grade and maybe challenging Howard in the future?
