Everton Youth Teams Thread

.....we even got to the final (against Villa) with Ronney as our only real stand out player.
Ah thanks for the memory, it was on TV and the first time I saw Rooney. Team talk must have been " Remember it's a team game, all of you give the ball to Wayne". He seemed to be involved in everything , clear the ball and it fell to him and he'd hold it up for an attack, and of course his goal and revealing of the (in)famous "Once a Blue always a Blue" t shirt. The only thing I remember about Villa, who were the better team , were the two Moore brothers Stefan and Luke , Stefan probably their best player but neither really made it at a high level.

No, it may be just me but I think the standard of our young goalkeepers is very poor.
In fairness they are all still young with Griffiths and Hewelt probably the leading contenders both 19. Butland is regarded as a good young goalkeeper at 22, and Liverpool have a guy called Ward on loan and doing well at Aberdeen who's also 22. I think I counted 8 young goalkeepers in a post recently and still missed one out - we certainly go for quantity ! Their difficulty is in getting suitable experience on loan, as teams are reluctant to play a teenage goalkeeper without league experience.

.....I think there were a few who came through from that Villa side (a bit like our team with Osman, Hibbert et al). Liam Ridgewell has played top flight for a few top flight clubs. I also think Whittingham and Davis might have played league football.

.....Hewelt was excellent in the game that was streamed by Soton a few months ago.

There was an interesting article in last Sunday's Sunday Times about how young Irish players get too much money too soon when they move to England. It started with the story of Kenny Dalglish knocking on the door of the then 15 year old Dominic O'Hanlon in Dublin saying he'd be in the Liverpool first team at 18 if he signed for them . He did so in a five year deal believed to be in excess of 1.5 mill Euros , over £1mill. He's 19 now , played in the u21 derby and his deal ends next summer. A number of other big money , million pounds ,Irish signings who never fulfilled their potential were included. It finished by mentioning "the current crop of Irish players who are comfortably off financially " including Liverpool's Conor Masterson and our own Steven KInsella who both played in the u18 derby last weekend. It seemed to suggest that these players are not on the same excessive deals as the past ones. I was amazed at the sums offered previously, £1 mill is a lifetime wage for some . Of the players mentioned , only Robbie Brady who now plays for Norwich has made it in the PL.

I think ridgewell captained the team that won the MLS.

think anyone who gets derailed by the money will just go off the rails when their a bit older anyway mate, either its in their make-up or not - professionalism etc, look at Deulofeu - bloody Nike sponsorship deals at 14 or something silly, Messi getting ridiculous hype from 15 etc - yet both never had an ounce of trouble

Ya true professionalism is the key.think when ronaldo and rooney were at utd one of the coaches later said that rooney could have been every bit as good as ronaldo but that he just didnt put half the work ronaldo did.no matter what you told ronaldo to do he done it and more in the gym whereas rooney kinda had a blaise attitude to it.granted i know wayne had a great career but never quiet hit the heights or consistency that ronaldo did.
