Everton Youth Teams Thread

Well I keep out of the general Martinez fume , but must admit he baffles me re philosophy on youngsters. First season, Stones & Ross came through, 2nd Galloway & Browning given a chance. This season nothing .....so far. You could divide this into a number of aspects re next season,I'll try two , Martinez and Players .

Martinez. You have to conclude that he's just too conservative in progressing youngsters as opposed to his tried and trusted "oldies" . Best example was Hibbert at left back instead of Garbutt last year, whatever you think of Garbutt , at the time he deserved that chance. Hopefully we will move the likes of Gibson, McGeady , Hibbert on at season end , Osman will probably go into our coaching set up. So a glimmer of hope that more spaces are potentially available for younger players next season if he changes his philosophy and promotes them.

The Players. Well we've done individuals on here many many times so no point in repeating. Let's be really harsh. It's generally accepted that good as some are we don't have any in the 19 plus age group who look ready to push for a starting spot, and many will be moved on this summer. ( Holgate &Williams are two exceptions still in the mix at 19) . So let's give Martinez a benefit of the doubt with a general statement that 19+ not good enough, 18 year olds is where the talent is but maybe some not ready yet.
Next season this changes, they'll all have had another year of growing , development and in many cases loan experience. It would be inconceivable for me that at least 3 or 4 don't get a chance from preseason and then the season itself. I've no idea just how good they can be at PL level , but weve got at least 9 players showing tenacity, maturity, athleticism , deft skills right across the board. You name it one of them has got it. You can't call them "The Golden Generation" and sit and watch them age , like me, into the Silver Generation

If he doesn't give them a chance next season it will, in my eyes, define him as a manager who's not appropriate for our club. Actually I'd include any manager of our club in that statement .
Agree with all that blueloon but the highlighted part most of all.if the best players in our academy are not going to be giving a chance to prove themselves then why keep it open.we have some top class lads there and we are the envy of alot of clubs so these lads have to be giving a fair shot.

That's a really good post. I would agree with you to. There is a big summer coming up all around. Osman, Peinaar, Hibbert, Gibson all out of contract. A lot of young players doing ok on loan and the under 21's winning. Alongside some who have had exposure doing well. There must be an opportunity to look to give 1 or 2 an opportunity.

It may well be that with his job under pressure he feels it's too big a risk. But if that's his thinking then we are probably barking up the wrong tree with him. Ledson, Walsh and Kenny will all be 18 this summer with lots of experience. I think it will be time to give them an opportunity. We have got away with putting people out on loan and putting the question on the back burner, but that time will go eventually.

Pennington, Browning and Galloway have all shown they are ok at this level. More exposure is needed now.

he'd be too gutless even it was going well. complete fraud

.....fine finish from Anthony Evans and a nice set-up in a 1-0 win over Reading posted on the OS. I'm sure somebody will upload to here. Might be the kit, but Evans looks like he's filling out a bit - lot of potential there.

Sunderland team is up but not ours ....... A taster
INSIGHT: U21s v Everton

Published: 07 March, 2016
by Sam Lightle

Take a look at tonight's under-21 opponents Everton.

After slipping up on Monday against Leicester City, Sunderland under-21s will be looking to get back to winning ways when they face an Everton side in very good form of late, winning the last three and unbeaten in seven Barclays U21 Premier League matches.

The loss to Leicester City opened the door for Manchester United to regain top spot and they did just that with a 2-1 win away at Middlesbrough, which saw them move two points clear with a game in hand.

After beating Southampton and both Manchester sides, Everton have the chance on Monday night close the gap on third place with a victory.

And ahead of the match on Monday evening, safc.com has taken a look at what to look out for from The Toffees…

The season so far...

The Toffees travel to the Stadium of Light in great spirits after an impressive 3-1 victory over Southampton last time out.

Sat in 4th place with 23 points, Everton have overcome a tough start to hit top form in the last couple of months, having not won in their first five league matches.

When the two sides met earlier in the season, it was a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with the Sunderland goal coming from Duncan Watmore.

Head Coach: David Unsworth

A real Everton man, David Unsworth made over 300 appearances for The Toffees in two spells at the club across 12 years, with a short move to West Ham United in between.

Unsworth scored 34 times in the Premier League for the Merseyside club, and was well known as a dead ball expert, especially from the penalty spot, despite being a defender.

Following his move from Goodison Park, he had spells at Portsmouth and Ipswich, before having two seasons at Sheffield United.

After short spells at Wigan, Burnley and Huddersfield he would retire with one England cap to his name, which came in 1995.

He would join Preston North End as a first-team coach and move to Sheffield United again as Head of Academy, before returning to his boyhood club as under-21 head coach.

One to watch: Brendan Galloway

The 19-year-old left back has impressed at under-21 and first-team level this season, as well as earning an international call-up at under 19 level.

He made his first-team debut at the end of last season featuring in games against West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur, and would earn Everton’s under-21 Player of the Season award.

After starting the season in the first team due to Leighton Baines’ injury, Galloway has appeared 15 times for the side, as well as helping the under-21s in the Barclays U21 Premier League.
