Everton Youth Teams Thread

Agree, while it wasn't a key game at the weekend didn't Klopp start with 4 or 5 from the academy? I think we could have put Dowell in as well at the weekend at least - instead we brought back people who are likely to not even be with the club come the summer. I was very disappointed, not in the young lads they where a bright spark - but the fact others weren't involved.

....I'm old enough to remember going to Anfield in 1964 with a team of untried youngsters and reserves. We won 4-0.

My friend is the sports editor at the Western Gazette. He follows Yeovil up and down the country watching them play and chats to the management and players. He said that Liam Walsh is absolute quality at that level, which I admit is a lot lower than the Prem. He said that he has been scouted by a lot of Championship teams and feels that he could definitely play at that level already, despite still only being 18.

He said his touch and passing are so much better than the other League 2 players and he also likes to put himself about a lot. He's really good in the tackle. Apparently in his first 10 games he was MOM 6 times.

He also said that's he's a nice kid. Quite shy but not at all big time. Which he said is impressive considering how good he is compared to the other players at that level.

Thought I'd share his assessment with you guys. Obviously League 2 is a lot lower than the Premier League but it's all promising for a player so young. He is apparently standing out a lot and looks like he is already ready for a higher level.

Here are a few articles about him:

Cheers for the info pal.
find it interesting that Walsh has excelled at that level while according to cambridge fans, Ledson has somewhat struggled

I live in Cambridge and know many CUFC regulars.

I don't think Ledson has struggled exactly. He has played every game, which at 18 is extraordinary. I can't think of any other 18 year olds holding their own in central midfield in League 2.

However he isn't standing out as brilliant, just looking like a good League 2 midfielder. But he is 18.

I saw Harry Kane several times on loan and for England youth teams and had him marked down as bog average. The experience will be doing him a world of good for his career.

Anyone know were i can get hold of top scorer lists etc for the u21 league?

I think thats being kind to Kane, I watched him for u21's and leicester and he was awful, not even bakayoko awful more like Barlow awful. The biggest difference I can see is his composure, he had absolutely none, whereas now he is so calm, I still can't believe it's the same player. It's the thought of this which I hang onto every time we have a player on loan.

I think what @Eggs is saying though is there is a key difference in ages (a point he's made before). Connolly and Davies are 17-18. What amazed me on Saturday is just how little they looked. I am used to seeing them at under 21 level and they both look quite big lads, whereas they both looked quite lightweight on Saturday (that's not knocking their performance just their build).

If you compare that to lads like say Pennington who is 20/21 then you see a really big difference. Both Davies and Connolly when they are that age will be around 6 ft and easily able to cope. Were it fits into the Klopp narrative is he is playing academy graduates who are 21-23 in a lot of cases. That is a noticeable difference.

The truth is our best under 18's are playing league football, some for Everton. There's are kept at under 18's level to win their cup final the under 18's derby.

I watched him multiple times for England youth & he was so poor. I have slated him so much to a spurs fan in work & very much have to take every little bit of stick he throws my way

you shouldn't have to! At the time he WAS average and you were correct. He can't just use the benefit of hindsight now to act on his high horse to be honest.

kane is a perfect example as to why not to give up on youngsters so easily. i think with someone like mcaleney, he's clearly not going to make it here, but i admire the determination to persist with him until quite an old age before making of judgements.
