Everton Youth Teams Thread

Well it looks like Connolly and Davies should retain their squad places at least for the derby as Coleman is out and....

"Tony Hibbert isn't ready for first team action yet after he played 45 minutes for the Under-21s on Monday night.

James McCarthy will be back in the squad after serving a one-match ban while Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley remain in the squad after starting on the bench last time out.

Martinez also explained that he would be comfortable turning again to young players if his injured personnel aren't ready to return this week.

He handed Callum Connolly and Tom Davies debuts last time out and is confident that the Club's burgeoning young talent would be ready to step in again if needed.

"I thought Tom Davies was very impressive and Callum Connolly showed his versatility," explained the boss. "They had that character to play in the first team and that is not an accident; we have that at the football club and it shows the programmes they are under to get them to that opportunity.

“If there are any minutes or places to be filled up by young payers we are in safe hands.”

Chelsea retained their UEFA Youth League title with a 2-1 win over PSG . I saw bits of the game , good attacking intent from both sides and some skilfull players involved. I recognised some of the Chelsea names like Tammy Abraham , Charlie Colkett , Kasey Palmer. The strength of their bench is amazing which more recognisable names like Chalobah and Jay Dasilva who from what I've seen of him is an outstanding left back for his age.

I'm still hoping that the rules of the competition mean that we can play in next year's tournament even if we finish behind Chelsea and City in the U 18!league, based upon Chelsea qualifying as winners , City by right as their 1st team qualified.

Every player who's in that all conquering team is elegible for England which should be good for the national side in years to come.

He hasn't half started gliding past people - great play that.

Between that and the cheeky corner he scored the other week - I don't see how he can't be on the bench at the very least.
Ya love that.just so natural to glide past someone.so effortless.you cant coach that.the way he has been playing lately imagine what a boost to his confidence it would be to make a match day squad.could take him to another level and be a timely reminder to ross that he would want to step up his game.been in a comfort zone most of the season has ross imo so be no harm to his game either if dowell starting making the bench regularly.

Absolutely - tbh i have said it a few times am sore he wasn't given the opportunity with Barkley rested at the weekend. Ross has upped his game this season with really no competition, imagine if a young lad like Dowell came snapping at his heels - which in my eyes he is.

He is a confident lad, the things he has been doing prove that - he has the ability too. Obviously size is difficult to compare, but he looks bigger physically (not in a prison way) then Davis, that might not be right though.

I want to see him on the bench tomorrow to be honest, more young hungry local players the better - you know Klopp will be playing a few, so why not give it back. I don't hold much hope for tomorrow - but i would have a heightened interest if we had some young lads showing their colours on the pitch.

Ya i think ross started the season on fire but has gone off the boil of late and just seems to be just playing in a comfort zone and i think the same has happened with coleman whereas they know there is no real comp for their places so it will do their game no harm at all to have dowell an connelly snapping at their heels.

Coleman's been horrific for it to be honest, he has regressed so badly. We needed competition, and while Byram would have supplied that i wanted Kenny to be the one to pressure him - I know it was always planned for him to go on loan, but was just hoping for a little bit of faith.

Connelly is an interesting one isn't he, don't think we will find out where he will finally settle in a position for a while. Which is an obvious benefit to the lad, being more flexible gives him more opportunities.

Ya kenny was probably just that tad bit unlucky that he went out on loan when he did(same as garbutt) because he probably was that bit ahead of connolly so might have got the chance ahead of him but connolly seems a great prospect who has goals in him an versatile.i think its blueloon on here has great time for him.
Ya i really think coleman has gone backwards is because he is undroppable because of lack of competition and he kind of knows it.ive noticed there is even a degree of cockiness and mouthing off in him this season which i never really saw before from him.

Definitely with coleman completely agree, he has a level of cockiness - he knows there is no-one there pushing him.. I like Connelly though, i do like the fact he is versatile, makes him a interesting prospect

Just going on the Davies thread, someone posted an article about when he trained with the England seniors. The article included James Yates who we haven't heard an awful lot of, considering he signed a 2 year deal last summer, how has he progressed...?

Seems to be a regular for the under 18's and makes the odd matchday squad for the under 21's apart from that i dont see them enough to form a solid opinion on the lad.there might be some regular match goers on here that might have more info than me:D

I think what @Eggs is saying though is there is a key difference in ages (a point he's made before). Connolly and Davies are 17-18. What amazed me on Saturday is just how little they looked. I am used to seeing them at under 21 level and they both look quite big lads, whereas they both looked quite lightweight on Saturday (that's not knocking their performance just their build).

If you compare that to lads like say Pennington who is 20/21 then you see a really big difference. Both Davies and Connolly when they are that age will be around 6 ft and easily able to cope. Were it fits into the Klopp narrative is he is playing academy graduates who are 21-23 in a lot of cases. That is a noticeable difference.

The truth is our best under 18's are playing league football, some for Everton. There's are kept at under 18's level to win their cup final the under 18's derby.

Davies 17
connolly 19

agree with your points though, different playing a 17 year old as opposed to a 20+ year old.

Btw was meaning to ask you, when ledson, walsh and davies are all fit then how would they line up for the u21s do you think?

Also would connolly usually play LB with galloway LCB ?

Nice clip, worryingly left footed of course, bit like that Messi fella, but Dowell does score with his right too. I think that makes him our top goalscorer in the U21 league with 6 goals.

It looks like Harry Charsley was the one playing in the DF midfield role with Williams, anybody go to the game to confirm that? Not a name that gets rave notices but he's played at right back when we had injuries so somebody reckons he's versatile as he's usually an attacking midfielder. If Davies does remain with the first team it would good to see Baningime getting a chance at u21 level playing alongside Williams.

Reports I read indicated Morgan Feeny had a good game alongside Holgate, another 17 year old youngster showing promise
but with a lot of physical and playing development needed yet. I love the knock on effect giving youngsters a chance has - Connolly moves up and Feeny takes his place at U21.

Baningme
williams
ledson
walsh
davies

who would play CM for the u21s and who could move up.to the 1st team next season?

Thing is i would probably expect a couple of them out on loan.

A couple of championship clubs have apparently been watching Ledson and Walsh with an interest for next season. Williams was asked about a couple of times but we said no, whether it was down to the clubs or other reasons i don't know.

Interesting indeed, for me a year ago he was an exciting prospect as a 17 year old left back with 4 other capable LBs ahead of him but plenty of time to develop. He wasn't as good as any of those 4 as a complete package, yet he had something that he did better than each of them in one aspect e.g better crosser than some, better goalscorer than others . Then he started to fill out a bit, blossom and show new talentsin a quiet under the radar way, a capable performance in a back 3 second half in the 3-3 Derby draw, a rocket of a shot from his right foot in November, more capable performances as a CH , then as a RB and of course the goals ratio continued to be very good. I would say he's going to be a LB but he's almost as good on the right , he can cross/ shoot with either foot so doesn't have to pull it back to the " stronger" foot.

If , big if, he's the one selected at RB on Wednesday then he'll need to be protected in a better way than Galloway was, and he might get that if McCarthy or Besic is playing ahead of him . Everything suggests that this is just a short term exposure to the first team I'm fine with that. Equally I want to get a glimpse of just how good he can be when playing against better players. Our season has gone stale on us league wise , him and Davies could be just the reviver we need.
