Everton Youth Teams Thread

While I agree that the credit lies with Unsworth , Sheedy and the other coaches , in fairness to him at least four of last nights U21 team were recruited externally by Martinez - Galloway, Holgate, Henen and Foulds . Hewelt came about the same time. Bill of course is ecstatic as he told him he'd lead the team to a top four spot.

Beni Baningime is a busy boy , made a first start for the u21s last night , sub tonight. Unsy has some nice things to say about him at the end of his E TV interview. Lavery doing the reverse, sub last night , start tonight.

I think Martinez deserves credit for taking more an interest. He has involved himself far more in the process and in general moral has improved from the younger players. Also he may not have given players as much exposure as people have liked, but he has given debuts too, Ledson, Dowell, Davies, Garbutt, Browning, Pennington, Connolly, Galloway as well as moving Barkley & Stones up to being first team regulars. A lot on that list would be surprised to have been given an opportunity in the first team, which will bode well for other young players at the club. (For example, Pennington & Browning were nowhere near as developed as Kenny is at the same age).

Moyes also did lots for the youth set up but in a different way. He took what was good about the youth network at Everton and expanded it. The number of scouts we had in the local area, the networks we built up with local coaches were fantastic. This was his work. Moyes's failing was increasingly he lost interest in developing them post 18 aside from the occasional standout player.

The Everton academy have always had good people involved and to me been a bit ahead of the first team. We are consistently in the top 10 teams and sometimes we win the league. They coach them to play good football and be comfortable with the ball at feet. Under Smith it always frustrated me that you'd see Everton youth teams playing with passion, technique and commitment and it would be a sharp contrast to the first team. The academy has been one area where the values of the School of Science live on. Martinez didn't transform them but he did take more of an interest.

As for Baningime I have a lot of time for him. He will do well at Everton all the while Unsworth remains in charge. He looks a proper Everton midfield player to me, loves a tackle and covers the ground well. There was a lot of talk about him as an under 16 and it's taken him a bit of time to get into being a regular starter. However now he's nailed down a place he looks very promising. He is the most natural "defensive midfielder" we have in our youth ranks and is happy to sit and break play up. I think he will be a regular for the under 21's next season and may allow Williams to move out on loan.

morgan feeney called up for england u17 euros. good to see with people bit concerned about us having no reps at that level.
That must be very satisfying for all involved, not recognised internationally when he became a scholar, but after a season of development he has been recognised.
Without labouring a point I've made before, the 1st Jan birthday for international squads can make a difference, Feeney is U17 but the likes of Evans and Banigime from the same scholar year are too old for U17 therefore competing against u18s many of whom are 2nd year scholars. He's got a nice style about him and like Foulds who's a year older will fill out a bit in coming years.
Lots of defenders getting recognised, it would be nice to see a goal scoring no9 breaking through ....... or maybe that will be another ginger haired 17 year old , Shayne Lavery.

yes was good to see evans involved with england u18s and banigime is more than good enough though he maybe wants to play for his birth country. not sure if he ever talked about it in an interview.

How do you rate Foulds development compared to Galloway mate? I haven't seen a lot of him.

Everton starlets to face Benfica, Celtic and Real Sociedad this summer

Blues invited to take part in U21 version of SuperCupNI - formerly known as the Milk Cup

Everton under-21s will take part in a prestigious summer tournament as part of a ramped-up pre-season schedule.

David Unsworth’s side are one of the four teams in the SuperCupNI - formerly known as the Milk Cup - in Northern Ireland.

The tournament has launched an U21 section for the first time and Everton will face Benfica, Celtic and Real Sociedad.

The SuperCupNI takes place between July 24-29 and will form the centrepiece of the Blues’ preparations for the 2016-17 season.
Unsworth has confirmed that Everton are exploring the possibility of lining up friendlies with Football League opposition.

Last summer, the Everton second string faced non-league sides such as Burscough, Southport and Tranmere but Unsworth wants to test his talented U21 group further this pre-season.

“Pre-season will maybe go up a notch,” Unsworth said.

“We are going to keep ramping it up a gear, even if it’s just five or 10%.”

Everton are in the final of the Lancashire Senior Cup and the semi-final of the Liverpool Senior Cup but have yet to receive dates for these ties.

Ta, I'd forgotten about Evans playing for U18s, I was racking my brains for who it was who said Neil Dewsnip had teased him on his introduction to the squad and settled on Williams. I remember he scored in the game he started.

How do you rate Foulds development compared to Galloway mate? I haven't seen a lot of him.
Galloway was clearly a good prospect when we signed him, slightly older than Foulds, more games for MK Dons and had played for England youth teams, hence we payed more and had greater expectations. Foulds was 17 when we signed him and I got the impression it was to fill a specific need we'd identified in his age group, a left sided centre back . Monday nights game , watched on a lap top, was the best opportunity I've had so far to see him. Galloway looked after him and I thought he did well against a talented Chelsea attack and never looked exposed . Having Williams and Baningime ahead of him to protect him a wee bit helped too. He started to shine in the 2nd half getting forward much more as an attacking LB. If I was to rank the defence that night it would be 1st Galloway, 2nd Connolly , 3 Holgate , 4 Foulds , not that he had a bad game just the age and maturity of the others shone through.
At 18 he's similar in some ways to Feeney, tall but thin as a rake and will fill out as he gets older . He played alongside Feeney as CB in some U18 games before being promoted to u21s so they've obviously seen something they like and doing the " play him at FB first" routine. To be fair to him it's next season that you'd compare him with were Galloway was as an u21, so not bad for an 18 year old but lots of competition from defenders 21 and under ahead of him with the likes of Galloway, Pennington, Browning,Holgate, Kenny, Connolly .

Well in the lates FF pics , Davies, Dowell, Pennington and Galloway are all training with the squad for Leicester, and it looked like Leandro in one picture, so looking good for some further involvement on Saturday. Think it shows Browning and Coleman training together in one picture too.
