Everton Youth Teams Thread

"This season the number of homegrown players who made their debuts in the Barclays Premier League reached a record high since the introduction of the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) in 2012.

In total, 67 homegrown players (HGPs) made their debut in the 2015/16 Barclays Premier League, a 24% increase on the 54 who did so in 2014/15. "
If you take out Bournemouth as most of their team debuted in the PL , Liverpool with 7 , Sunderland6, us with 5 are next. It's astonishing that all our 5 are truly home grown and local. I don't follow Liverpool but recognise at least 3 , Oji, Gomez, Ward came in from elsewhere.

...I have a theory about Ledson that might be totally wrong but having watched him lots at club and international youth levels he was the natural leader. It was clear how much his team mates looked up to him even when he captained many star players as England won the Euro's.

Perhaps the step up to open age football has been difficult for him because all of a sudden he's not the player in charge. Leadership is a key aspect of his game and it might take him time to adapt.

Well he's got a good chance to firmly establish himself again in theEngland u19s trip to Mexico as two midfielders Lewis Cooke and Reece Oxford have dropped out. While we've had past England youth captains like The then highly rated Steven Schumaker not make it for us , Ledson is still very much in the mix and contention to make a break through, hopefully next season .

There have been some good articles in this series , there was also one about the next u21s likely to step up, but that may have been the Echo. I'd have thought Shayne Lavery would have got a mention in this one as he stepped up into the u 21 squad, and Matty Foulds too , as at he played regularly in the last few months of the season.
It's incredible the number of talented youngsters we have even below the "5 " who played PL this season, and I often have to do a reality check of thinking "yeah but even 2 making it from a year group is outstanding" . At our lowest level age wise then this time last year we hadn't even signed on full time Scholar forms the likes of Evans, Feeney, Foulds, Banigime and Lavery.

I really liked the next generation series with Pennington, seems a very level headed clever lad who has a good approach to football. That comes across on the pitch too, where he positions himself well and reads the game. I think he will do well for us and be a bit of a find.

Me too. Kenny seemed so much more natural at RB, but Pennington has the potential to be a solid squad CB. Just seems dependable and a big enough lad.

I think all of the other 4 are far ahead of Pennington was at 19 and should go onto be even better players. However I admire the way he has improved himself. When I've seen him I've been very impressed and would be happy with him at either right back or centre back. Given his physical development I would say he is a bit better than Kenny if we were picking the first game of next season.

I really like what we are doing defensively. We have a growing number of proper defenders who can play full back.

James Yates is interesting, I would say he is one of the few youth players who stayed still in his development last season. He looked to have made the RB spot his own for England u17s but he looked very poor when he played in the World Cup last autumn , at times he was too far up the pitch when a breakaway attack occurred and often seemed to lack the energy to get back , just ambled back. Maybe it was the heat , need to pace yourself I don't know. But from looking two seasons ago to be in the Kenny mould of a pacy , attacking right back who could also defend he's fallen far from that standard. I don't think he's even in the current England u18 squad, think it's only Davies, Evans Holland . Next season could be a big one for him ,needing to establish himself at u21 level.

Yates is a lad from Huyton I think. It is a very interesting comparison with Davies. Even though Davies had captained the under 16's as under 17's they were both very similar in their levels of development. They have gone in opposite directions really.

Yates seems to remind me a bit of a Tony Hibbert type defender, keen to get forward but not convinced on his quality on the ball. I have always thought Lees has a bit more quality in their.

The really interesting anomaly for me has been Jo Yarney. Most games I see him I think he looks very. Quick, big, tall and vocal he is one of the better centre halves I've seen with us at Under 18's but doesn't get much of a mention.

Yarney disappeared from view pre Christmas, little info comes out of the club but it may have been due to injury, same with Yates too. For the last few u18 games Yarney and Lees were usually the central defenders and we had a good run of results, err except for the obvious one.
He's facing stiff competition for a CB spot at u21s though. Taking aside the older players like Galloway, Pennington, Browning , ahead of him are Holgate, Connolly , Feeney and probabably Foulds too based upon them having played at u21. And I wonder if Lees , a year younger, is going to be pushing on too next season.
I know he played some games in front of the back four, any thoughts on whether he may be tried in an Eric Dier type role?

This'll be a good picture if they all make in as Everton players

Agreed, Kenny is trickier, and you need that at RB. Meanwhile Pennington is a natural CB. Play them to their strengths.

I have never seen him in front of the back 4. In all honesty I wouldn't say that would suit him. You could see with Dier he was very comfortable on the ball which isn't the case with Yarney. It's an odd one with him, nobody every mentions him but most games I see him I am always very impressed. That can happen though.
