Everton Youth Teams Thread

For all RM's faults, and that coaching rotation system seems to have been a bit iffy, he has I believe helped improve the academy in his time here.

He took a keen interest (as did Moyes) but was - earlier in his tenure at least - willing to give the younger players a go and help them progress to the first team, and for that I think he deserves recognition, plus his ideas for FF are fundamentally good ones.

Koeman will play youth players if they are ready, and I think Dowell and Davies will both be around the first-team picture next season (at least for the first few weeks while any potential new signings bed in or are brought in late) - and that's exactly why we don't need loads of signings this summer - just three or four quality additions that keep the squad performing where it should be and allow the youngsters time to develop fully.

Confusingly there appear to be two people in football, roughly the same age, with the same name, both of whom have worked at the academy. John Doolan #1 worked for us before becoming Alan Stubb's assistant at Hibs and now Rotherham. John Doolan #2 is currently one of our youth coaches.

...I'm sure John Doolan played for EFC as a youngster, I think he was a RB.

Watching the video's of Unsworth and the Under 21's it's very easy to see why he is so highly regarded and why we do so much good work. You can't tell a lot from the short clips but it's what's not said that is often telling.

The drills look interesting and engaging and it's clear the players enjoy them. He seems to get a really nice balance between being firm but also being personable. There is also an aura of calmness when you watch the players and he is able to devolve responsibility to lads like Ebbrell very well (I know who has moved up form the under 18's).

Everything seems calm and calculated with a thought through plan. Stubbs did a good job with the under 21's but I think Unsworth has really taken it onto the next level.

As a slight aside it will be very interesting to see what happens with Pennington this Saturday. He wasn't involved last Saturday. Unless there is an injury I would imagine 1 of 2 things. Either Koeman doesn't fancy him or alternatively like Jagielka he is being pencilled in for 90 minutes against Barsnley next Saturday and Koeman wants to play centre backs for 90 minutes together in pre season. I certainly hope it's the latter as I am a big fan.

Finally Galloway looks like he's really shot up and filled out.

Re: Pennington I'd say it's likely the latter. Unlike other areas on the pitch 45 minute cameos for CB's isn't very helpful as the first 45 mins would be a lot more about how they cope physically and the latter 45 more about their mental state like concentration. Thus 90 minutes for all the CB's (suspect Jags/Penno @ Barnsley) is much more beneficial for pre-season. I also see Holgate/Galloway as possibly the pencilled in future partnership in the first team if they develop like they should.

Yes I hope so too mate, it did seem very odd him not being involved at all, especially given we had Davies at Right back. I think Koeman obviously understands the need for lads to play together at Centre back. Depending on fitness of Mori there is a chance them two could start the season at Centre back.
