Everton Youth Teams Thread

Agreed. Still got a way to go but far more a centre half physique than last season. Not far off looking like Stones' shape.

Yes that was what was noticeable. He looked quite quick too. I have been quite hard on Galloway but thought he was quite impressive yesterday and that was the first time I watched him and thought I could see a lad who play centre back yesterday.

That was only my second watch of him play his natural position (other time was end of U21 season also with Holgate) and he's impressed me both times. I'm all for giving him minutes at LB but there needs to a come a time when he's tested at CB. We all know the youth leagues aren't the answer. I hope he can become - bar any changes in personnel - the 4th choice CB this year and not shoehorned out wide just because he's athletic.

Yes I hope we bring in 1 centre half if we lose Stones and I am not worried if we blow the lot of Koulibaly. Galloway can get some gametime there, and also think Pennington and if needed Browning will be able back ups (particularly Pennington.)

I like Pennington as he's no nonsense so fine with that. Browning is very quickly being overtook and not by just the one defender. Time is running out for him to have a future here.

What is good about our young defenders is they are all a bit different. Pennington has the best football brain. Galloway is probably the most calm under pressure while Browning has the best physical attributes. Contrary to belief I think Browning will be quite a useful right back, physical, get up and down and give us some added height. I think he will be a useful utility man who can slot in across the back and will be on relatively low wages. I think he should take Hibbert's place and hope he is kept on that basis.

He kind of reminds me of Phil Jones in how he's an auxiliary defender. I like the lad, great athlete, it's just whether he can push on like the others have and stake a claim. He reminds me of the defensive version of McAleny.

I think he's closer to the first team than McCaleny mate. He might not be good enough. However most squads need lads on relatively low wages, who can fill in different positions. I think he can be quite good at that. United spent huge money on Jones whereas for us Browning was free.

hes over 2 yrs younger than mcaleny and played more first team games. also had successful loan spells wherever hes went, same cant be said for mcaleny.

England u19s beat Croatia 2-1 with Kenny playing left back for most of the game , Ledson in what looked like the solitary Defensive MF role. Sadly Callum Connolly now back home due to injury. I though both our youngsters had good games, playing very much as they did 2 years ago for the U17s that won the UEFA trophy, but now 2 years older more composed, playing against older opponents etc so still in there.
Kenny was clearly unfazed about playing on the left , looked pretty accomplished defensively, hit some good balls forward with his right foot by cutting back inside. His anticipation and reading of the game has really come on, a number of times he moved up quickly to cut out a ball being played through cutting off attacks.
It's hard to believe people had doubts about Ledson last August, he was back to playing exactly as he has done for the past few years, quite far back in front of back four, always looking to be available if someone needed to lay off the ball. His 40 yard passes beyond the defence are still there one example leading to a goal which was disallowed for offside and a number which quickly released forward or full back.
Kenny should be a certainty to start the semi final against Italy , not sure if Ledson will lose his place to Rossiter who's more energetic but Ledson has the better ability to turn defence into attack with his long passes. Maybe they'll play both but Bothroyd seems to favour only one deep midfielder at the moment.

If these two , plus Connolly, are to go out on loan next season it really needs to be at Championship level, all of them are capable of playing there and would benefit from that level of competition.
