Everton Youth Teams Thread

@catcherintherye @blueloon

What are your thoughts on the imminent signing of williams and the gametime given to galloway, holgate and pennington?

Do you think he is stopgap for a couple of seasons and when Jags retires as well 2 of these kids can step up?

Made his debut tonight for St Pats as a substitute, I remember this kid has a serious reputation when he joined as a 15 year old. It was seen as a big scalp as we beat all the other major clubs to his signature at the time, I wonder how he has got on in the Everton academy.

....my initial thought is that he hasn't done that well if he's gone back to LoI but there might be something else, perhaps he's got a bit homesick. Brewster went to non-league Stockport last season and is apparently held in some regard so perhaps he still has a chance.

If I am honest with you mate, the answer is no but the more complex answer may be that I am not sure they are related.

I think we are very short at CB currently. Mori is currently injured as is Jags who has becoming a bit plagued with injuries. With Stones leaving is leaves is very short. The transfer strategy thus far has been to go for top names and be prepared to wait for them to decide. However we don't have this luxury at Centre Half anymore.

I also think the last two games have been a bit of an eye opener for all concerned. We are still a bit off being where we want to be (ie challenging for the top 6). I think Fonte and particularly Williams represent a move in strategy to get a couple of lads in who are reliable. The squad itself is filled with inconsistency in a variety of ways. What you will get from Williams is consistency and leadership. If you were Koeman you know if we sign Williams this week he will give you a dependable performance starting with Spurs at home. For a new manager, especially at Centre half that must be very tempting. So I am not sure it is part of any "plan" but rather a short term to a transfer window that is beginning to look a little desperate. I think he will calm the squad, manager and fans down.

Normally you pay through the nose for that certainty. I am amazed he is only 10 million. I think we are broadly on the same trajectory in how we want the club to go and I know the Esk has mentioned that is going to be a big remit of Walsh's. Look for younger/cheaper players and develop them. A lot of clubs are doing that now though, in fact most clubs are. As with all things supply and demand means it has led to a huge spiking of fees for lads in their early to mid 20's as every thinks they can get a "sell on" value while more experienced players values have probably declined slightly. In that context a lot of the business we are doing makes sense. 10 million for Williams in a market where Smith goes for between 3-6 and Tomkins goes for 15 is astute.

As for the above 3 I think there chance may come at either full back or in a back 3. I think Koeman probably gives young players more of a chance than maybe you have suggested but not as much as others might suggest. I have never been entirely convinced by Holgate, likewise I do need a bit of convincing regarding Galloway. I am not sure either are natural Koeman centre halves. Pennington is but he hasn't been used as much and I suspect for whatever reason Koeman doesn't fancy him as much as I do. I would be surprised if all 3 came 3, maybe 1 or 2 might.

I just jope the youngsters are patient and keep improving. I dont think koeman will be here long and then ideally a new manager may play them!

It is the biggest risk on the pitch to play young lads centre half. Stones is an exception, but even he played full back when he was first introduced to the team. It is all about decision making at centre half, whereas mistakes in midfield or up front can be tolerated, at centre half they cost you goals. It is an area that koeman and the fans have identified as a series weakness in the side and koeman is not going to risk a youngster to remedy it. Hence why our interest in Williams and fonte.

Yes that's a fair point, I sense Koeman will be here for 2-3 years. Pennington is 22 soon though and the question is how long do you wait. Holgate and Galloway are 19 so have a bit longer. Koeman may surprise me and start including them but I think he will prioritise winning games first.

EXACTLY!!!

He is 100% a short term manager who focuses on the next game and not the long term. Usually gone within 2 seasons (mostly through sackings but ho hum)

Pennington is an odd one as he came from nowhere after impressing on loan. The other two i hope (plus kenny and connolly) learn as much as possible in the next two years and give the manager something to think about.

Quick musing but I think Jags' time is up in terms of how much he plays here; injuries have got him now. Pennington is decent but will never be more than that to me. Galloway and Holgate can be just as pragmatic at the back whilst possessing far more natural ability. I like the kid but won't get as far as the other too. Out of all the academy defenders I think Galloway, Holgate and Feeney are the best prospects.
