Everton Youth Teams Thread

I was thinking before the match that as far as I remember we'd kept a clean sheet in the last 3 competive matches ( Chelsea last season , 0-0; NIreland games both 1-0) but only scored 2 goals. So another clean sheet but this time with 4 goals, and it sounds like we dominated the game, all be it not high class opposition. What with finishing off last year's cup competitions, the new EFL competition, PL International cup and the PL u23 league it looks like some of these guys will get a decent run of games.

any idea why the other bigger teams pulled out? You'd think they would have relished this, especially considering the money they spent on buying youngsters instead of developing locals.

The PL teams are required to play one match at their parent stadium and it causes scheduling headaches for the first time so they pulled out. Wasn't worth it.

Agreed but I do sympathise a little since Duffus, Rodriguez, Henen, Dyson etc. aren't what I would consider quality. Should see a lot more goals this season.
Yep, that was part of the problem last season. Now the younger players are moving up he's got the chance to develop them too.
Re Brewster and Broadhead, it's a puzzle why they haven't appeared yet , maybe as you say they'll come through a bit later. The one warning bell for me is that both didn't get a chance at u21s last season - we see the goals they score , others see them full time in training and maybe they weren't ready, but other players of that age stepped up. Or it may take us round in a circle, with their way being blocked by older players mentioned.

Seen Evans name pop up a fair bit now. Would the more educated amongst us view him as the next one to come through?
He's got something different that's for sure , including great pace with the ball.
We had 5 youngsters play PL minutes last season, and of course they still need to establish themselves so the job is not done yet. If I guessed at another 5 who may get PL mins this season I'd include Evans , but not top of my list . I'd go for Holgate, Walsh, Ledson, Evans, Baningime roughly in that order of guessed at likelihood .

Any other thoughts on " 5 youngsters to get PL minutes this season" , ?

I would probably side with you to be honest mate, I was shocked at how much Holgate has grew since i last seen him, taller then Galloway!

My only issue is, i think Walsh and Ledson will head to the championship for the season, if we where keeping the youth together and all training together i would definitely say they would see "first team football", maybe no PL minutes though. I think the level they where at last season proves they are ready for the step up, I'd like to see them involved, i just think they will go out again.

Wouldn't mind seeing Evans play in the cups, and Baningime on the bench to mix it up.

Last night was the first chance I had to see him in the flesh. First impressions are positive, as blueloon mentioned he's fast with the ball at his feet, evident with the goal that he scored. He also has an eye for a creative pass. He looks a fairly laidback character one who has probably found football easy and natural, it will be interesting to see how his game develops when he steps up a level .

broadhead was at the milk cup thing i think, brewster must be injured.

I'd like us to keep as many of the kids unsworth would consider "u23 squad memebers" at the club as possible.
Build them together as a team and even bring some of the lads who are spending time with the 1st team in and really go for that league this season.
Developing at a league 2 side is fair enough, but i think if we develop these lads together as a team and they come back with abot of silverwear to show for it then that would be fantastic for them and give them that winning mentality.
That means probably
Hewelt, Pennington, Galloway, Holgate, Foulds, Feeney, Kenny, Garbutt, Browning, Connolly, Jones, Walsh, Ledson, Davies, Dowell, Williams,Grant, Evans, Baninegibe, Sambou, Henen should all be used when availible and not required for the first team

a few of them will undoubtedly go on loan and garbutt will be sold imo

I suspect Connor Grant may be quite close to the first team starters.

Garbutt is a good "benchmark" to judge the likes of Pennington, Kenny and Connolly etc. 15 months ago I thought he looked quite good at LB when Baines was out , then Galloway played in the role and he didn't really kick on during last year's spell at Fulham. I still like him but would agree that his future probably lies elsewhere. My point really is a cautionary one, that his career took him right through England youth set up including U21s and 4 or 5 games for the 1st team , that's a good standard, yet he may not make it with us. There's still a long way to go for our youngsters though all are at a younger age than Garbutt was when he made his debut.

Yeh I suspect the latter. Maybe Unsworth wanted to given Dyson another chance, Rodriguez and Henen as new signings he kind of had to (were they too old for U18's?) and Duffus is respected I imagine. I think they're now all on their last chances and I can see a swap happening in January if none of the (don't think they will) take it.
