Everton Youth Teams Thread

I was thinking before the match that as far as I remember we'd kept a clean sheet in the last 3 competive matches ( Chelsea last season , 0-0; NIreland games both 1-0) but only scored 2 goals. So another clean sheet but this time with 4 goals, and it sounds like we dominated the game, all be it not high class opposition. What with finishing off last year's cup competitions, the new EFL competition, PL International cup and the PL u23 league it looks like some of these guys will get a decent run of games.

The clean sheets is the big one for me, added in the way we defended V Norwich and Unsworth seems very adept at setting up a side defensively. Nice post on Ebbrell a few pages back he seems to have really made a mark over the last 6 months. Delighted for him as he was a massive blue who also acted with great dignity for us.

Skem are a long way off the standard but looks a really good win for the lads. One point I didn't make in my pitch for Unsworths abilities is he has shown a developed tactical nous, particularly over the last 12 months. We no longer just play well, we often get the job done and win games.

Nice to see Ledson back involved, as people have said he hasn't developed as people thought he might over the last 2 years (most thought he'd probably be where Davies is currently.) Nice to see him back involved. Interesting that Walsh didn't start and Banningame did, it shows what he is doing positively.

Over the last 3-4 years we have had a glut of under 18's and sometimes under 16's playing for what I will call the "reserves". This always used to be a good way to differentiate who would make it. If a lad played for the reserves as an under 18 you would keep a close eye on him. Ledson, Charley, Walsh, Kenny, Connolly, Davies, Williams, Evans all made that difficult because so many broke through at once and cemented a place.

However I do think we are going back to how it normally was (and in honesty how it is for almost every other premier league side) in that we may have 1/2 under 18's involved and they should be watched closely.

Onto the game looks a convincing win. As has been mentioned above, lots of competitive football now, with the EFL, international trophies, Liverpool senior cup. Probably up to a dozen competitive matches on top of the PL structure so going in the right direction.

It's interesting mate in that this season I'm looking for something more from Unsy than great defensive nous and ability to hold a lead! I say that because I know he's got those abilities and can do it with different set ups e.g. last game of season Galloway/Holgate were the CBs now it's Feeney/Foulds . It's impressive ,but now , maybe same as with a player, I want to see if Unsy can " kick on".

Our goal scoring record last season was average , so not too great for a team that finished 3rd , with no real outstanding goalscorer although we scored some outstanding goals. Unsy often appears to have a conservative " what we have we hold' philosophy , I'm not knocking that , it's been very effective. But when forced into it he can make astute decisions , the best example last season was when we were 3-0 down in the derby match and he switched to 3 Defenders, brought DAvies on and attacked differently resulting in a 3-3 draw. He's got some exciting attackers at his disposal this season and he was involved in scouting Sambou , so he's his man now, let's see if he can get the best out of him. There's no question in my mind that Unsy can set up a team defensively, if he can show himself adept at getting the best out of our young attackers he'll emerge as an outstanding managerial talent . 4 goals and a clean sheet is a great result whatever the opposition.

Agreed but I do sympathise a little since Duffus, Rodriguez, Henen, Dyson etc. aren't what I would consider quality. Should see a lot more goals this season.

Yep very fair comments them mate. It is an important aspect to look at as well, the PDP of our coaches. I think he is quite open minded and will be ope to further improving.

I do agree with your sentiment. I think thats the next step for him. He did step up a lot last season too, not just in terms of defensive work but in terms of in game management. We lost a lot of games first season whereas we won most last season. The performances stayed the same but we got over the line more.

The only example I would throw at you re attacking talent would be Dowell. I think over the last 18 months he has really taken that lad onto the next level. So it is is there.

I'm interested to see what he can get out of Broadhead and Brewster. Both showed a lot of promise last season for the 18's.

My observations from watching the game tonight confirms the lack of goal scorers we have at our youth level. I hate to be negative about any players particularly young ones but I can't see Dyson naking the 1st team.

Sambou came on at HT and missed what can only be described as a sitter. He did look lively though and after missing a relatively easy headed chance he benefited from Evans putting the ball on a plate for him to score.

Yeah I was there too, that Sambou miss was criminal! Thought McAleny looked bright, Ledson was quality, Jones made some great runs and Garbutt decent too!

I don't see Brewster appeared anywhere so far.. Surprised by that to be honest... He was stellar for u18s and should be given a run surely... Same goes for Broadhead I guess.
Evans has started well it seems.... It's a lot harder to break into Everton since Rooney days.. These guys have a lot to prove!

I think they'll make the jump halfway through the season. Both the U18's and U23's have a lot of players to pick from so no point in cramming everyone in the U23's as they'll get less game - and development - time.
