Everton Youth Teams Thread

Was co
Yeah first time I've seen Brewster's name this season so obviously back from injury. Broadhead down to play for Wales U19s on Sunday so probabably not risked.
Just noticed actual match thread too, which I missed.
was concerned by their absence.. Oddly hoped it was injury as I felt the one area the "reserve" side lacked last year was strikers... And these boys were killing it. Brewster has dominated every age group since I noticed him in SA in U16s so wondered why the club wasn't backing him. Hope it's the start of something at this level for him.

Yeah agree about Brewster last season and Broadhead who actually out scored him for the U18s. On their goalscoring record you'd have thought both would have figured in the U21s last season and certainly in future u23 games. And that's the niggle I have. What's missing that we don't see that has prevented Unsy from giving them more game time? Hopefully it's nothing more than good management of young players but I would like to see them play up a level soon.

The problem we currently have is that we have too many players for all of them to get enough game time. Just going from the official site we have 37 u23’s with 3 of them currently out on loan.

Some of the key players from last years u18s Broadhead, Brewster, Yates, Holland, Donohue have hardly featured this season which can’t be healthy for their development. I think once we start sending more players out on loan more opportunities will come up but it must be frustrating for those too young for the u18s and faced with older, more experienced u23 players above them.

I have this voice in my head that tells me any player that is going to "make it" should be pushing for first team football in their teens else not going to happen. If Brewster and Broadhead are good enough to make it one day they should at least be regulars in the u23 now. Take Evans, he is even younger isn't he and already a regular. I think I need to lower my expectations a notch.

Comments regarding Liam Walsh: "Blues youth coach David Unsworth said: “We want to keep him here because we feel he’s a future Everton player, but if the right club for a certain individual came in we’d certainly look at it."

just what I want to hear!!! Don't know why he hasn't played more for England..

yeah i still tell myself that as well, but these days with the large squads and amount of money at the disposal of premier league teams, it's probably unrealistic. There's a bit of leeway for defenders and keepers imo as well as they develop older. Only the really really special ones ala rooney are ready to make the step up at 17/18 etc in the premier league nowadays, with the odd striker being good enough, imo, due to the poor defences in the premier league.

It does seem weird when we buy these players who are 19 and have only just started playing at league 1 level, just to throw them into our reserve team, you wonder how old they'll be to make the step up, 21/22?

agree 100%. Often thought that unless you are at a Barkley level at 19 you HAVE to stay at your club and get the miles under your belt. So many of the 17/18 year olds that move to big clubs and vanish after being stars at their youth level. Take that Fulham kid Roberts that moved to City. so many examples. I would guide any youngster to stick it out unless you knew you were being drafted into the first team squad. Obviously something is going right if you are being courted.

Yes definitely loan , there was a fuller version that I read, maybe Monday, in which he mentioned the extra number of U23 games before Christmas, referenced Walsh and the opportunity to impress the new manager as reasons that a loan may not be the best option for some . I took it to mean that they can reconsider options for loans in January . I can't find it now so it's all from memory....err I don't think I imagined it.
