Everton Youth Teams Thread

I'm talking about Gerrard using his influence to persuade kids and parents to sign for the rs. Kenny Scum did the same and we lost Fowler, Steve Mac, Michael Owen and is Kenny also tried it with Rooney but failed in this one. Maybe I'm over thinking this
I get the feeling that might be more difficult now anyway what with Liverpool starting to give their youngsters more first team opportunities?

We brought a reasonable few through over that time too.

The blunt reality is that in spite of the rhetoric Liverpool have been far inferior to Everton at bringing through any players, particularly local lads. Over the last few years that has grown even more.

Lets have it right, we have given more league debuts to local teenagers in the last 9 months than they'd have probably done in the last 10 years. (Think Pennington, Davies, Kenny, Connolly, Dowell). In the last 5 years I can only remember Alexander Arnold and Flannagan getting league debuts. I will check but they simply can't match our record.

Things can change, but the blunt reality is we have have a system that works. From the central ethos (to scout working class areas) to youth scouts, to youth coaches, to ex academy players being involved, to an u23's manager who's a former academy graduate and the best in the country in his role, to a traditional and history of promoting people. Networks have been developed and maintained. We are very good at what we do.

Liverpool do ok but there operation is lagging behind ours significantly. It's not uncommon to see our younger ages annihilate them. Often up to under 13's/14's we'll often beat them 13-0 or 16-2 etc. These scores are not uncommon. There was a year that a Liverpool team refused to play a rematch with us such was the size of the divide. It closes as we get towards unders under 16 through under 23's. We generally still finish well above them, but their superior spending power allows them to fill their squads with multi-million pound assets often paid more than the entirety of our own in wages and gives them a chance of being competitive.

The LFC view will be that one man can come in and change this momentum. I don't wish to do Steven Gerrard down. On the field if one man could make a difference it would be him. However translating such an approach to youth football under estimates the complexity of building a successful network and in truth is insulting to the hard work "ordinary" people do behind the scenes. Having a strong youth network is not about parachuting in great ex players, but is about having decent people at every level who represent the club well.

People will go on about City and Chelsea being the best academies. We have matched their league performances in recent years. We are lightyears ahead of them in players being brought through for our club. Like Liverpool (but on a bigger scale) they buy in the best talent. Our academy is the best at what it does by a long chalk. Liverpool's is ok, but miles behind us, and Gerrard will not make a massive difference at all.

..I know what you mean, Matey but I think he's got illusions of grandeur and won't be coaching youngsters for long.
