Everton Youth Teams Thread

...as I posted in the first half, Dowell was bound to have a moment in the game where his quality shone. For me it wasn't the goal it was the subtle and sublime little pass he played behind their back four. He delivers that pass that only quality footballers can.

I expect the reason he hasn't stepped up is because he goes missing in games. He has the ability to influence matches but you often only see him fleetingly. Good players tend to play better with good players so he could improve for the step up but he might not put himself in the game enough for RK.
I think the criticism that he goes missing is a bit harsh to be honest. I've watched him numerous times and in my opinion he's not gone missing.
He can't play passes, like the one you describe, all the time, no one can. It also depends where he plays, he looks much more effective centrally than being stuck out on the wing.
He worked hard last night, within the first few minutes he tracked his Spurs midfielder from right to left and into the box which stopped the lad getting a shot on goal. You maybe correct about Koeman but I think given the games we've got left and the way he played I'd like to see him get some time from the bench, maybe instead of Lookman?

Honestly, I was crying out for him to play last season and thought he would force his way in this year but he was hugely disappointing the first half of the year. This was down to a few things with him getting the hump that Koeman didn't fancy him after pre season and also with him growing another few inches but I don't really think he warrants a place yet. Walsh is the one that I'm desperate to get game time but he has so much competition in front of him. Dowell is currently a match of the day player with a great highlights reel but doesn't affect games as much as he should. It's no use him looking brilliant for 5 mins a game if it's the equilavent of playing with 10 men for the other 85 and that has too often been the case.
I keep saying it but in terms of outright talent the lad should have been playing first team two years ago but considering how good his football brain is he seems to lack something innate. He can tackle and chase back but he prefers not too. That just isn't going to work with Koemans ethos.
I agree with most of what you're saying but I can't agree that the lad goes missing for 90% percent of the time. I watched him closely last night and at no point was it like playing with 10 men. In the first few minutes he tracked his runner about 30 yards when the Spurs midfielder made a diagonal run into the box and he stopped him getting a shot on goal. Generally he worked hard off the ball.

In the second half he saw more of the ball and was more influential but that's because we were dominating the game and he was moved more into the middle. Personally I'd like to see him & Walsh get some minutes on the pitch before the end of season. They're both good enough in my opinion.

...I know Unsworth reckons he's a no10 and he certainly has the vision and skill set to play in there. He's a languid mover and we know RK likes his players to press, I just wonder whether that is the reason. Interesting that he's not been sent on loan. As I said, he has quality and he would have to be placed carefully if a loan is arranged.

going by some of our pathetic previous efforts (ie. galloway to pulis, lundstram to blackpool) you couldnt guarantee that will happen either.

I would love to see him go on loan abroad Eggs - think you would see him have the sort of impact that Lewis Baker of Chelsea is having at Vitesse if he were at a similar club. Ideally i would like to see him get minutes here but I do think your right, he has a lazy gait to his running and wonder if this affects Koemans perception of him, however, I would think with all the stats that they have with regards to distance covered and number of sprints etc if he was where we needed him to be then he would have been involved. Its well documented that Koeman has spent more time nurturing Barkley than any other member of the squad and Dowell is the same sort of player.

I love Dowell but I often forget he's playing in games. Maybe it's a case of him thinking U23's is too easy so he can just coast but to the onlooking first team staff they won't be impressed with that attitude. Walsh grabs games by the scruff of the neck, Dowell does not.

Until 4th is mathematically impossible doubt we'll see any youngsters (other than injuries forcing the issue) being given game time.

Thats a good description. Last night was a very "Dowell" game as well. He kind of frittered on the edge of it but produced a moment of absolute quality. He kind of comes to life in and around the box and as the commentator said, that goal isn't a one off-he does that regularly.

I am a big believer in players having windows to make an impression at a club. I have no doubt Dowell will make a very good career for himself (as Ledson is now doing at Oxford). I would say he'll play at least 50 games in the premier league. However I am unsure they will be with us. I think his window to break through was probably last summer, when Koeman had a look at him and passed him on again. Davies the other young player who trained with the first team has really kicked on. It's hard to see on last nights (and other performances) how far he has improved on last season's performance, or how he can improve on them massively. In fairness to him his closing down has got better but he looks to me to always be the sort of player who will frit around the edge of a game before making something happen. I know Unsworth has been working hard at trying to improve him, but sometimes you are the type of player that just doesn't fit a managers style.

There is a lot of a comparison to Ozil at Arsenal (a lad who also infuriates Arsenal fans). The key words Koeman has said are intensity and pressing. Thats not his game. I don't think it ever will be. In many ways he's the opposite of Barkley, who is constantly in the game, Dowell it's all about subtlety. I do hope I am wrong about the above. I enjoy watching Keiran play massively, I wonder for those who saw him how far his demeanour reminds them of Alex Young? I'd love nothing more than to see Keiran get a chance in the summer and take it but have my concerns.

It was an interesting game last night. I thought Spurs were the better team but looked a bit like how we did on Unsworths first season- namely playing some good stuff but not quite capitalising as we ought. As the Spurs fan said, they were a bit young (average age about half a year younger) but had half a dozen under 18's involved who all acquitted themselves very well. Edwards looked the standout lad on the pitch to me, but as I've said since I've seen him he does need to learn when to release the ball and help maximise the natural talent he has (which is substantial). I liked the number 5 (centre half) for them as well. But yes they are a proper club and remind me of our youth set up really, playing the right way.

As for our performance we it was a bit reminiscent of the 87 league success really. We seem to be able to win games quite ugly. We hit channels a lot, which is something Unsworth feels comfortable with and more in line with what the first team coach wants (and a break with the previous manager). DCL had a decent game and you can see why they like him, he works hard, has a good touch, quite quick, good in the air and presses well.

Fennel looked solid at the back and once he continues to grow could do well. It was great to see Galloway back and thought he did well, he looks at lot bigger now and natural at centre half, which kind of illustrates the point the physical development between 19-21 is very important for young players.

In midfield we were a bit lost first half. I thought Besic played nicely. Whats interesting is just how much more physical he looked than Walsh and Williams. When we need to get our foot in he was well ahead of those lads. It kind of illustrates while these lads are good players, physically they are still a bit behind senior pro's in terms of strength. It's the only area he looked superior to Williams and Walsh but a very important one.
Walsh was very good in the second half and continues to look a very natural deep lying playmaker. He's also aggressive and nips into tackles well. I hope he gets a chance with us. Williams was a bit lost in the 10 but better when playing deeper.

Dowell I've spoken about above. Cookman couldn't get into the game much. He could probably do with the seasons end and the break, to take in everything that has happened to him and start afresh.

The team more generally looks devoid of any standout players. Watching it, as you do over the years there was no player that stood out as "this lad will make it". No Rooney or Barkley. Yet Davies was a bit like that when he played in the team last season and he's thrived, so it's an inexact science. What does come across though is (as Unsworth said 2-3 years ago) none of them will let us down. Part of that is the good conditioning they've had within the academy and specifically what Unsworth has given them. Part of it is for the most part this is a very talented group of players. Charsley, Walsh, Williams, Dowell etc are all signifiantly ahead of any lads at under 17 and most of our under 18's.

It's hard to pick any out who are nailing down a starting place. It's tradition in pre-season for younger players to get opportunities while the internationals have a break. I can see a group of 7 or 8 who played yesterday being involved and have learnt that opportunity. Ultimately they will need to make their case in the summer which won't be easy and for some could almost be last chance. I'd like to see Galloway, Kenny, Dowell, Walsh, Williams, Lookman and DCL all given a chance with the first team squad. I feel each has learnt that chance.

I was impressed with Unsworth again. We were poor first half but he made some subtle changes. I couldn't make out what formation we played second half. Dowell seemed to be in a false 9. Yet whatever he did it worked and it stifled Spurs and turned the game in our favour.

i may be wrong but wasnt dowell away with the england u19s with the likes of kenny during pre-season whereas davies was available and made the most of being away with the firsts?

I'm in my 30s and I'm proper homesick. Why can't anyone in this country make decent pizza? Surely it's not that hard. I refuse to believe it's that hard.

Anyway, I'm sure Lookman will be alright after the summer once he's able to get comfortable living in a new city.

Are you a fellow Americano?

Excellent summary catcherintherye. I thought Sambou was excellent when he came on, high pressing, quick, decent tough and a superb finish, he could easily have finished with a hat trick. Thought both teams were excellent going forward in the 2nd half, what stood out for me in terms o difference was the pressure we put on the ball compared to Spurs. There was a period in the game where Spurs struggled to get out from defence, shortly after Sambou came on, and we looked like we could score everytime we went forward. Thought Williams was good in the 2nd half but he definately looks more comfortbale playing deeper. Dowell showed some excellent touches, hope he gets a chance to show if he can make it as it would be a shame if he dissapeared without ever really having a sniff.

Pretty much sums up what I saw that mate. All the defence did well, thought Feeney looked great with his reading, positioning not to mention he puts a good hard tackle in.
Charsley made the difference because it allowed others like Walsh to play in their normal position and the team just seemed to get further up the pitch 2nd half forcing errors from Spurs. Two absolute quality strikes as well.

Sounds like Feeney is very well thought of among the younger lads. Anyone know how Matty Foulds is progressing?
