David Unsworth names the Everton youngster who always impresses him in training

Kieran Dowell has scored five goals in 20 appearances for Everton's development side so far this season.

David Unsworth has told Everton’s official website that he is always impressed by Kieran Dowell’s performances in training.

Dowell has been on the verge of a breakthrough at Everton in recent times, with the midfielder looking like another exciting talent at Goodison Park.

The 19-year-old has made two senior appearances for the Toffees throughout his career to date, and he has regularly trained with Ronald Koeman’s side’s first-team.

Dowell showed his potential again yesterday, when he starred during Everton’s development squad’s 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Dowell scored a wonderful goal from long-range during the contest, but Unsworth insists it was no surprise to him.

“I’m delighted, but it was nothing we haven’t seen in training,” he added. “Kieran does that in training day-in, day-out.”

Dowell looks to be another Everton youngster who has a chance of breaking into Koeman’s first-team.

Koeman has already given a number of Everton’s most promising talents first-team chances this season, and Dowell could be in line to break into the senior squad sooner rather than later.

Dowell has now scored five goals and claimed six assists in 20 matches for Everton’s development squad so far this season.

Everton striker Bassala Sambou "like a young Danny Welbeck"

Unsworth coached Welbeck when he joined Preston North End on loan in 2010 and he sees striking similarities with young Blues forward Sambou.

The 19-year-old scored a superb goal at Goodison on Monday night to put Everton’s under-23s back in front against Spurs before strikes from Kieran Dowell and Dominic Calvert-Lewin sealed a 4-1 win.

Everton are now five points clear at the top of the Premier League 2 table with two games remaining and Sambou has also scored in recent wins over Manchester United and Derby County as the title race has intensified.

Unsworth says the teenager – signed from Coventry City last summer – was hampered by injury and illness in the first-half of the season but is now beginning to flourish and is showing the same flashes of quality as an emerging Welbeck did.

Everton are approaching crisis point over Barkley's future
“He’s somebody we watched and liked, we brought him in,” Unsworth said.

“He had a couple of injuries early on, he had his tonsils out believe it or not which set him back, it really floored him that did.

“He just reminds me of Danny when he came on loan from United; very raw, really quick, likes to get in behind, a goalscorer who can score all sorts of goals and he’s a wonderful boy as well, so we have high hopes for him.”

Sambou came off the bench to replace Ademola Lookman on Monday evening and has only managed four starts in league and cup this term.

But Unsworth is excited about his potential.

“He’s an all-action striker and he’s desperate to score goals and he looks the part when he does things like that tonight,” the Everton coach added.

“But that’s not a surprise to us, we’ve seen him do that in training, he scores some great goals but also scores goal-scorers goals, if you know what I mean.

“He just needs time.”

“He’s got fitter and fitter,” Unsworth added.

“Initially, it was a bit too much for him physically, in terms of the tempo but that was something we knew would take time, we knew we weren’t getting the finished article when we get these young players in.

“But we expecting potential and he’s starting to fulfil some of his potential.”

Bassala's goal reminded me a bit of one Rooney scored for us against Charlton, back to goal, controlled and moved the ball into position with one touch, finished it with same foot with his second touch. It would be absurd to compare him with Rooney of course, just the way the goal was scored. Unsy's always had a lot of faith in him since he was signed, but he clearly needed work done at USM FF , and that work is paying off. I would say that on goals per mins played only Niasse is ahead of him in the U23s matches. He's still work in progress , but the raw talent is there. I wouldn't send him on loan next season, I'd give him more starts for the U23s , Duffus, Dyson and Henen won't all be here next season , so they won't be blocking him.

A little off topic, I am right in thinking that our agreement to play games at Southport comes to an end now. Surely our next U23 is as also at Goodison but where are we going next season?

finch farm? not sure how the building work is coming on but surely wouldnt take too long to knock up the small stand or whatever it was they were doing.

One thing I'd add to the loan debate is that it is a path to the first team not the only one. We've seen plenty, maybe even the majority, break through without a loan. The likes of Dowell are probably better served staying at the club and learning to play the style that is demanded from the coaching setup.

Majority? Aside Davies I can't think of any first-team academy graduates that haven't had a loan or been bought elsewhere.

I see were you are coming from completely on this one pal. Also as the case of last season when Davies got a couple of games around the end, would Walsh (Yeovil) or Ledson (Cambridge) took his place in the matchday squad if they had been at the club?
Likewise this season with Pennington, im sure Browning, Galloway or even Connolly would of been picked ahead of him if they had not been out on loan elsewhere.

Our record for loaning players out and them coming back and becoming better players is not very good to be honest, Coleman had a successful loan at Blackpool, and Barkley did at Sheff Wed but then had a nightmare at Leeds. Walsh had a very good loan spell at Yeovil but the level was to low for anyone to decide he is ready for football here.

I'll ask a question I've asked before. How many of these kids would be happy be an Everton squad player for the foreseeable future vs. leaving to play first team football down the league?

I know it's not a guarantee that any of them will end up as squad players, but frankly why not? Why would we go out and spend big money on foreign players, or even British players who rarely start when we could pack the bench with homegrown players?

If Martinez was still here, I bet he would be in the team, don't you?

I think this is a case of swings and roundabouts because whilst i agree that Dowell and especially Walsh would have featured if Martinez was still here i don't think Davies would have.

Martinez was a fan of Cleverley whereas Koeman has essentially replaced him in the squad with Davies.

Our third game in Dallas kicks off at 3pm local time.

FC Dallas currently sits in first place in Bracket B due to their impressive goal differential. With a win over Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday and a CF Monterrey loss or tie, FC Dallas will be through to the semi-finals.

If FC Dallas and CF Monterrey both win, goal differential will decide who will move forward.

If Everton wins and FC Dallas loses or ties, Everton will be back in the Super Group semi-finals.

There's also still a chance they can go through as the top-ranked second place team, but they either have to win by a bunch of goals today or hope no one else gets to 6 points without winning their group.
