Everton Youth Teams Thread

Reminds we when we last win the title in 87. The goals were shared all around the team, with a fair few players netting double figures. Congratulations to all involved. What a massive life for the academy and more importantly what better way then to attract future talent to the club.

Also serves as a reminder that there could still be progress and success with the first team should Lukaku be sold!

Says a lot about the standard of the U23's if he's terrorising everyone then. We really can't judge a player until we've seen them play a proper level.

..he's a scorer of terrific goals but not a terrific goalscorer. I wonder if he's more effective coming off the bench as he's had a real impact on games doing just that.

Fantastic achievement considering a lot of the lads are home grown as opposed to the Chelsea, City, Liverpool squads who cherry pick lads from all over the globe.

The next question is, what is the next step for these lads.
Would it be harsh on Holgate if we gave Kenny the final 3 games of the season after the chelsea game as a reward for his form.
If Kone is still appearing on the bench should Dowell get the final 4 games placed on there.
What is the next step for someone like Liam Walsh with Schneiderlin, Gueye, Davies, Besic all ahead of him at the moment. (plus williams who koeman has put on the bench a couple of times ahead of him)
We have the likes of Connolly, Jones also returning from loans

Also with a "BIG" summer of spending, how many of these lads may not see any chance of first team next season?
If we buy in 7/8 players as some people are asking on here, it would stop these lads training with the first team let alone getting in match day squads. Which would be a backwards step to the progress made this season

...I think another key factor is that Unsworth appears to have incorporated a team spirit into that side. That's not easy with a group of young professionals competing against each other for limited places in the 1st team squad. It might explain why we've amassed more points than teams with costly imports.

It's another consideration in your question about next steps. Great as it is to win that league, there mightn't be many individuals that RK is considering for the step up. Of the regulars only Kenny and Williams appear to be near getting a game. Worth noting that Davies and Calvert-Lewin have already come through, although the latter was a purchase and didn't play too many games.

I expect some of that side will leave to make way for others coming through and purchases in the summer. Those that move on might include Liam Walsh who will be in demand and who will feel he's ready for league football. I remember a quote from RK saying the club won't stand in his way. Even if we really rate these lads, we have to manage expectation.

The Walsh thing is a strange one. I'm not a massive fan of loaning players out as i see it as sometimes an out f sight, out of mind scenario! (While Walsh & Ledson were away getting league 2 football, Tom Davies got a spot on the bench and hasent looked back since, going back if Walsh & Ledson were at the club at the time, i reckon one of those 2 would of took that spot on the bench).

I think another year in the u23s for Walsh (and Dowell) would be counter productive, as they have shown for 18 months now they are to good to be just playing u23 football and anything below championship loan would also still leave question marks on if they can make it in the prem also.
Do you keep them here to see if a chance comes up to get in the first team but if the chance dosent arrive they have pretty much missed out on a years development (think Solonke & Loftus Cheek at Chelsea), do you loan them out to a championship club but run the risk of them not getting trained properly and also if you have a few injuries they miss there opportunity as they are not at the club, or do you do what we have done for Ledson and let him take a step down to try and build there way back up.

I think the situation is abit different for Kenny with seamus being out till Oct/Nov he possibly see's an opportunity to try and get in the team. If we dont buy any sort of back up right back (i hope we dont) then he will be needed around the 1st team like he is now

i think walsh and dowell will both go on loan to championship for next season, hopefully royle gets them good clubs where they will play most weeks.
as you say theres an opening for kenny now with coleman injured so hopefully he'll get the last 2 or 3 games. holgate been steady but just doesnt offer the attacking threat that coleman does but kenny should be able to replicate.

I think with @Eggs mentioning a few of this side may be on there way out.
Which may seem harsh on a few of them but history suggests if you get 2 or 3 players out of a group then it is seen as a success.
With Davies and Holgate already pretty much 1st teamers, DCL getting game time plus Pennington, Kenny & Williams around the squad recently, Dowell, Connolly also having made 1st team appearances id say to look to see who else can come through is pretty unrealistic.

Thats 8 players i've mentioned (lets say 5 of them are good enough for arguments sake), to throw any more than 6 young lads into a regular squad of 18 would not work. You need the more experienced palyers in the side to to help them out.
Klopp changes his side for cup games, and you hear commentators realing off how great it is to have a side with the average age of 21 out there blah blah blah, but what are these kids learning playing alongside lads who are at the same standard and level of them? They would learn more having 4 or 5 kids in the team and experienced players in the prominent positions.

you look at the most successful person at doing this was ferguson with the nevilles, Butt, Beckham, Giggs, Sharpe Scholes. All of them bar Nicky Butt who at the time was the most mature player of them all, when they came in were used in positions that were not in the "spine" of the team. The nevilles at fullback, Beckham, Sharpe & Giggs on the wings and Scholes played centre forward.
They had Schmeichel, Pallister, Bruce, Keane, Hughes, Cantona, Ince all playing in the important positions nad the kids on the outskirts learning.

The best thing for someone like Davies is having someone like Schneiderlin & even Lukaku around him in the team

I'd really like to see the Spanish model, with the U23 teams of maybe the top 8 Prem team playing in the lower divisions.Would give the youngsters real game experience. And I'm sure attendances would improve for the lower league sides as people would like to see the "stars of the future".
