‘You’d ask for a Photo’ - Delph has got the fan base nailed in fairness there.

Seriously though getting into slanging matches with fans on social media is ridiculous. Doesn’t reflect well on him.

Knowing who at least a couple of the lads are who turned up at finch farm I’d think he was probably best served not pulling that big time line with them .

Delph "you wouldn't say that to my face, you'd ask for a picture"

Out of our players, I could not imagine ever thinking I'd ever want a picture with him.

Hearing about what he said to Holgate, he thinks he's a legend of the game and we all look up to him.

Honestly all I can think of him is that he wanted to leave Villa, then doing a U turn for a new contract saying there's still loyalty in football, then joining city on a mega contract only to mainly play left back despite being an attacking mid.

What an ego and disappointing signing, as someone else said he screams Williams in terms of his atitude.

What did he say to Holgate ?

The difficulty is knowing which bit is true or untrue. Has this been established yet?

I mean if it is true, he comes across as quite arrogance and full of himself to me. I mean I'd be a bit more humble if I'd been given the run around by Chirevella and Lallana. I'd also state that "you wouldn't say that to my face" is asking for trouble really, given how angry the supporters are.

The default response from our fans to every single poor performance seems to be 'they didn't try'. They do try, they're just not very good. Delph is worse than most.

I think we have to be a bit more forgiving than that of supporters. It's clearly a phrase that articulates a much deeper understanding of what people are trying to say.

Of course the players try. However were they as committed to the win as they ought to have been? Relative to their opponents did they want to win enough?

Were players taking enough care in key phases of the match?

In fairness to Delph, and there's not a lot of defence I am surprised he has been picked out from the match. He was on for a short period of time, and did seem to make himself available for passes out of defence more than the 2 other midfielders did combined.

I actually wouldn't ask for a photo though, same with Schneiderlin. I understand with some players we slag off and if we did see then we would want a picture but for me Delph isn't one of them

I've addressed this in a later post. Yes, there's no dispute that Liverpool were more energetic than us etc, but that doesn't mean it's right for everyone to say the players were strolling round, they don't care etc.

I don't think it's us that have to be forgiving in this instance, it's the people using the wrong words who need to have a rethink. The point is, I can absolutely see why a player would take offence at being told they didn't try if they did. It shouldn't be up to them to work out what someone actually means by that.

I probably disagree with the last bit. If you're being paid the amount they are, I suppose a bit of common sense to understand what is meant by the point stands.

I've had managers before who've made a point of saying we weren't trying to players, myself included. I knew we were, but also grasped what was meant was that relative to our opponents we were beaten for effort. It's hard to avoid that conclusion from Sunday. I'd have hoped Delph could have understood that. It looked a lethargic performance.

Either way though, I'm worried about Delph. I just don't have a great gut feeling about him. I was concerned when he was mindlessly swearing against Bournemouth, his altercation with Holgate doesn't sit right with me and neither does this. He comes across as a bit of a bully to be honest. There is a difference between being a firm leader, and being unkind and unhelpful.

Kinda this, I'm not really so annoyed at Delph for Sunday, he was only on half an hour and he's clearly playing below full fitness because hes one of the only walking midfielders in the squad.

But if you're going to start demanding respect and calling other people out you better walk it like you talk it.

We'll agree to disagree. If you think highly paid footballers are likely to be more intelligent than the average person, and therefore more able to understand what someone means than the person actually saying it, I don't think you've met many footballers.

That wasn't really my point anyway though. There are hundreds of posts on here saying the players didn't try, didn't care, weren't bothered, are a disgrace. They mean it. They're not accidentally using the wrong words, they honestly think that the players didn't try. I believe they're wrong.

If the screenshots are completely false I take a lot of it back, but it's just a guy feeling I have. I supported the Delph signing but have been underwhelmed by him so far.

Gareth Barry always took a lot of criticism but to me he was always a consummate professional on and off the pitch, and I can't imagine him getting embroiled in social media spats with clearly very angry supporters. I'd also say he led by example. In the FA Cup semi final against champions Chelsea, watch which of our players goes and squares up to Costa and allows him to headbutt them. He dealt with that situation for the team.

I'm leaving the fan stuff out of it. Just looking at it purely from a group dynamic POV. If you're going to join a team and start calling your teammates out then you better be setting the examples in training and on the pitch.
