...and City were correct to adopt that strategy. I dont see the price fetched for Stones as great, tbh. Everton blinked first and City got Stones for about £8M cheaper than if Everton were in command of their own transfer window destiny.

Whatever the reasons on the hold ups, securing such players takes boldness to cut through all that. As i understand it our strategy is to use a big value sale to clear the decks for big wage purchases (whatever the fee that they're secured for). So how could we have been bold enough to secure those targets early in the window if the pre-requisite was a big name going out the door. The cart was put before the horse.
Not sure about logic here to be honest, Stones was always going to go so buying marquee players early makes sense. In saying that the simple fact is we haven't spent money until we've sold Stones, that's what is worrying.

I think it was more before we hired Walsh but leaving it late also lessens the chance of getting into a bidding war. We did also need to know what our budget was so Stones was definitely a factor. Thats now clear.

How is it clear exactly .
The club have said they were trying to buy a couple of marquee signings at the start of the window. Those signings didn't come off .. Not through lack of intent or desire or cash on the clubs part. All of those signings could and would have happened regardless of Stones leaving. I have no doubt if Stones had asked to state would.
