It is the thoroughness of the search and appointment process that is the key factor.
In the modern era we have consistently played it safe in the choice of manager, culminating in Allardyce being seen as the only option by Moshiri last time around.
There most definitely is a ceiling on the calibre of manager we can attract, but as with the player market, I'd rather we aimed for the very best emerging talent out there rather than some dull, uninspiring, unambitious steady eddie, who will just carry on regardless and leave us as we were, or worse. That mode of thinking needs to be ripped up and binned.
We are rubbish but will finish 8th, so we can afford to take a calculated risk. It's never really been about a big name for me, that ship sailed years ago and Moshiri's arrival has done nothing to change it.
I want a manager that can forge his own identity and reputation whilst rebuilding the very same identity and reputation of this club. The candidates are out there, but we have to look beyond Preston, Wigan, and Southampton as starting points, and be very wary of other flavour of the month candidates.
If Moshiri could grasp that idea we would take a big stride to recovery. Yes, its hit and miss but there are no guarantees anyway. The potential upside if we had the smarts to hit on the next Simeone or Pochettino are still massive for us.
