People say Dave is "negative", but a cold-eyed assessment of where we are likely to finish this season makes his "negative" prediction seem the most plausible outcome. City are the hottest of favourites to end our Cup hopes, and we're currently outside even the fifth place he suggests we'll miss out on. While we can all hope, I'd say he's less negative and more realistic, frankly.

We all know hes right, but what is life without hope?

Why should we just accept reality when we can dream?

The cup is an outside hope but 5th is realistic if we can get James back for the last 10 games. Still to be in this situation is still better than what we've had in a good while and a sign of progress.

And im sure they can find better ways to "invest" over 1 and a half billion pounds.

Anyway, quick, somebody was praising the Death Cult in the corona thread.
Depends on how much they want to increase their profile.

We've had Chelsea then City spaced a decade apart in terms of genuine out of the blue and transformational take overs. We're due another. They wont go for an established (present day) giant, they'll go for a club like Everton.

Realistic, yes. Likely, no.

I think we've made great progress, but the wishful thinking - or dreaming - gets a little grating when trying to have a rational discussion of what we can expect to achieve this term. This matters because there are quite a few who will start pointing fingers at Carlo if their unrealistic expectations are not met. Can we win the Cup? Yes, we can - three wins are not beyond most top flight sides. Can we finish fifth? We have an outside chance of finishing fourth. Are we likely to do either? No. Are we likely to miss out on winning the Cup and fifth place? Probably. Is Dave negative? No, he's utterly realistic. Does he take relish in his realism? Absolutely. That's what makes him entertaining. Over the last 25 years, the realists were derided as "negative", yet their predictions have, almost without exception, been proven to the be accurate, reliable ones.

I suppose if you come here to dream, Dave and his ilk are party poopers. If you come for analysis, like I do, maybe it's time to accept you've come to the wrong place. ;)

It is negative when you say you can't do something that you have been in amongst for the whole season. A lot depends on luck, injuries, other clubs situations (such as City doing well in the CL and wrapping up the title early) but we can do it.

I probably think 6th is where we will end up but if Ancelotti keeps up his win percentage we will be there or there abouts so dismissing it out of hand is just Everton that syndrome.

That's the theory. I haven't noticed Spurs having a massive boost yet.
I don’t think Covid and empty stadiums were part of the plan for them to kick on. Also, they have always been media darlings so it has less impact for them.

For us it’s about completely changing our profile. It will lead to better sponsorships, greater matchday revenue, and a biggeff Ed media presence.

You'd take that right now.

My FF ITK by the way says he saw Ancelotti in training shaking his head and overheard him saying to Ferguson "FFS, how did Roberto get 72 points out of these cabbages?"

I doubt Carlo Ancelotti even gives a second of thought to anything Roberto Martinez has ever done in football.

Let's not put too much emphasis on th stadium (if passed). It will be a huge boost, but in and of itself no new stadium can catapult a club up the league.
As it happens, I agree. I'll tell you one thing you could guarantee though, stay at a decrepit Goodison and watch the slide of the last 25 years under Ken Billwright accelerate.

That’s a one off assessment though. In a new stadium, with Ancelotti at the helm, being backed in each transfer window, then 5th place finishes and trips to Wembley will become even more regular.

The fact some are still getting misty eyed over a failed season that’s as the best of a torrid bunch show how poor the pre Moshiri premier league era was. It’s taken Moshiri longer than it should have to turn this oil tanker around no doubt, not helped by Koeman ploughing it even further in the wrong direction, but there’s no doubt in my mind we’re now firmly pointed int he right direction and we’re going to start motoring towards it.

Yes, it's an assessment of this season's chances. I happen to agree with Dave's take on this season. I think he'll be proved right. But we are definitely going in the right direction. The progress is undeniable. With Moshiri's continued support and Carlo's expertise, we are definitely on the up and up.

My take on us currently is that we simply do not have enough good players, and certainly not enough worthy of Ancelotti. That will change, however. Too many delude themselves about the current squad - and are primed, therefore, to point the finger at Carlo if we finish 7th or 8th. Those thinking we are a good bet for the top four tend to think our players are good enough - or that Carlo is a miracle worker. Neither of those things are true. He's doing well with a very ordinary group of players. With better players, we're going places because we have the perfect manager of good players at the club.
