Docklands/Marvel stadium was of course Waverly Parks replacement. There was already one ground close to the centre of Melbourne in the MCG.

There probably wasn't any need for another one. From reading Big Footy the general consensus seems to be, that Waverly was a ground that had no real atmosphere or character to it.
You could get a decent atmosphere when full. Think it housed around 78000 - 80000. Saw a few Collingwood v Essendon games there in the 80s when the bombers used to flog us all the time. If it wasn't full then yeah it lacked big time. It was just a big grey concrete bowl stadium with no character. Was also known as Arctic Park as it was always freezing cold there.

Love an absurdly oversized footy pitch. It's like Dan Gable's absurd wrestling mat at Iowa, which he got away with because there was no maximum size under the rules. "Run away from my wrestlers? Not here."

Also, hurling obviously requires more skill than any other game. I walked into the local Irish pub about a decade ago with the kids at like 11 AM before a game at Busch, sat down in our usual spot, they had the championship game on TV and there were like ten minutes left to run. No one made an issue of this (sitting there to watch was a membership thing since they were spending PPV money to get it), since we were Yank regulars obviously unaware of the rules on this one. It was like watching lacrosse with no pads and a stick as ill-suited to the purpose as a golf club. I said, "These people have bags of athletic talent undreamt of by Americans."

Its an incredible game, you arent wrong its amazing skillful. Im very involved in the GAA. Great story.

I have one right back at you. I lived in the States for a bit and i played for one of the GAA clubs over there. After training we used to head to the same bar in the neighborhood, i got friendly with one the girls who used to work their and asked her out. We headed out for dinner and went for a walk along the river just shooting the breeze, deciding to finish the night in the neighborhood bar with a couple of scoops.

About a drink and half in, one of the locals our own age and his mates start pestering the girl on her night of and being real Leary with me, as he got drunker he took exception with an Irish fella "coming over here" "dating their bartender" - long story short we ended up outside 5:1 and im the 1. For the next couple of minutes, i got a couple of haymakers in, but was roundly battered by 5. So im lying on the ground thinking im goosed here. When all i hear is crack and a body hitting the floor, another crack the same thing. I look up and see the lads from the hurling team, they had just finished training and heading for drink when they saw waht was going on and started taking out the American lads with their hurls.

Anyway more join and big mele breaks out. Next thing we hear are sirens, some run, we stay were we are, so the cops line 15 of us up against the wall, hands to the wall some of us and some of them. We're thinking "oh sh..." - the cop asked "whats happened here" - and one of the American lads goes "I dont know man, we were just minding our own business when all of these, Irish guys turn up and start attacking us with their giant wooden spoons". lol

Hahaha we couldnt keep a straight face.

All ended well.

I took my son to Celtic park, Goodison, Wembley, Nou Camp, Bernabau and Metropolitana (Atletico Madrid) a few years back.
The one he still raves about is Celtic park. The atmosphere is unrivalled by any English ground.

On a Champions League night or at and OF game its incredible.

The first time i went was in the middle of the cival war in the early 90s not unlike what was and had gone on and was about to go at Everton, was sureel the ground was empty as a boycott was on as part of the protest against the board just before McCann took over and it was before the stadium redevelopment, the fog in Glasgow was thick and the game was called off after 60 mins. Was an incredible time during the clubs history to be there.

I went on to to live their for a few years and had season tickets, when Celtic were winning all around them Larrson, Lubo, Lambart Liam Miller, Chris Sutton. etc. Celtic where is the CL then and really competitive. Remember seeing Kompany play one one of his first games for Andelecht in the CL there. Another night beating or drawing with Fergusons Utd at Parkhead, atmosphere was electric - shortly after Utd signed Liam Miller, he put in some performence that night.

Its an incredible place to go really.

Rayo Vallecano another standout one I've been to. Three sides ground in the middle of a working class area of Madrid. Saw them play Barcelona and the atmosphere was brilliant. People watching from the flat balconies behind one end which is just a big wall.

Never went there but the old White Hart Lane when you could stand and it was packed out always came across as a really good ground with good atmosphere.
