The PL signed off on the accounts. The Athletic suggested that certain transfers in were also blocked, not this summer but previously. There has been ongoing co-operation. I don't expect a smoking gun to emerge at this stage and if there was, it would reflect very poorly on the Premier League. The club can only answer to the specified charge.
The optics look good since in terms of belt tightening. Their representatives will make much of that at the hearing.
I expect a financial sanction but nothing more severe than that.
Did the PL really 'sign off the accounts'? I don't think this is something that the PL do. The PL are provided with accounts that will have been signed off by an accountant, and then they make a judgement based on the information detailed within said accounts. It's not like a piece of homework that the PL hand back to the author; telling Everton to change the content of their submission in order to pass or fail.
Personally, I don't think there has been as much hand-holding as has been suggested. I don't believe that the PL have had controlling oversight of Everton's bank account with them preventing expenditure that they object to. I think this is a myth. It's not the PL's responsibility to provide such hand-holding.
I'm also not convinced by this story that "It's only a tax issue relating to the stadium". I hope this is true, and that our alleged breach is not something more serious than that, but I'm not convinced at all. We will see.
The fact that previous accounts did not result in any alleged breach doesn't mean that our latest set of accounts are fine either. The PL being fine with our accounts in 2022 doesn't mean that they are okay with our set of accounts in 2023.
