A big match for Ferguson and Zaragoza and a chance to take advantage over the tie being at home first. Flano was back in the team for Zaragoza and Juan came back from his suspension. Zaragoza were last in the play-off final in 2033 but lost to Las Palmas. If they get promoted they will end a 22 year wait which will bring adulation to the Zaragoza supporters. The crowd were in full voice as the teams came out of the tunnel. Ferguson gave a wave to the supporters around the stadium before taking to his seat. Zaragoza kicked off and the noise levels were raised even higher. The match wasn't at the tempo we expected inside the first half and there was still a sense of nervousness around the stadium. Javi played the ball forward on 35 minutes, Abadias helped it on to Alvarez who overlapped on the left, he tried to cross but Solet cleared, Romero took it down nicely, he played it out wide to Alonso but Tamarit intercepted for Pamplona, he crossed into the box but Martinez claimed. Texeira came forward for Pamplona, he passed inside to Bauza and he instantly threaded the ball through on the outside of his boot for Tamarit and he slotted low past Martinez to give Pamplona a crucial lead. Juan won the ball back from Tamarit on 40 minutes and passed to Alonso, the fans roared the team on, Alonso got it to Flano, he took a look up to asses his options and played it left to Romero, he tried a shot from outside the box but it was wide. Tamarit was running at Zaragoza once again but Perez was solid at the back and dispossessed him, Flano knocked it back to Javi to allow the team to regroup. Zaragoza were getting the ball into the box but the finishing was poor. It was a frustrating first half for Zaragoza, they were the better team so far but just could not take their chances. Alonso took the ball down well from Martinez's goal kick on 64 minutes, he switched it to Abadias, he ran forward into the box but ran into the defence, Flano tried a shot with the loose ball and the keeper got down well to push it away. Alvarez played to to Abadias and he was too quick for Garcia, he passed to Flano who had space for the shot and he put it over the bar, a great chance for Zaragoza. Ferguson made a double change, Alvarez was replaced by Gomez at left back and Zubillaga went off for Alvarado. Gomez took the throw and Flano turned on the ball and knocked it to Abadias, he crossed into the box and Juan came in with a tremendous volley into the top corner! 1-1! What a strike! Zaragoza rescued the tie with a late goal and head in to Sunday's second leg with the scoreline equal. The pressure will be on Los Blanquillos to get a result away in Pamplona and end the 22 year wait.

Real Zaragoza are one game away from ending their 22 year absence from top flight football. Duncan Ferguson was complimented for the encouraging start he made to his managerial reign but refused to accept superlatives for the teams hard work this season having only joined the club late on. Romero and Juan exchanged passes on 4 minutes, Flano came deep to get the ball and played it wide to Alonso whose first touch beat his man and he crossed into the box, Romero came in and placed the ball into the back of the net! Zaragoza 1-0 up after four minutes! Torrado took the corner for Osasuna on 6 minutes and Romero is adjudged to have brought down Alfonso, penalty given! Romero has gone from hero to zero in the space of two minutes. Bauze sends Martinez the wrong way and it's all square once again. Zaragoza were sat deep inside their own half as Osasuna piled on the pressure, Zubillaga took the ball from Javi's clearance he tried to get it forward to Alonso but Munoz intercepted and Martinez done well to save his shot. The half-time whistle sounded and with both teams level at the break, it seemed second half advantage could be with Osasuna. Second half substitute Julian took the free-kick on the edge of the box for Osasuna and curled it into the top corner to give his team the lead with 22 minutes to go. Ferguson took off Juan and brought on Israel Silva. Abadias took the free-kick on 73 minutes and found the head of Perez but it went just over the bar. Romero played the ball wide right to Manzella, his cross was cleared and Romero's shot was deflected over for a corner. Flano made way for Alvarado who supported Zubillaga up top. Seconds remained for Zaragoza to end their 22 year wait, Zubillaga played it left to Abadias but he was tackled and the referee called time. A disappointing end to the season for Zaragoza and another season playing in the Laliga 2.

DF: It's hard to take, these players worked hard all season and for it to end like this is painful. It's hard to pick them up after this, you can see the disappointment and the emotion in each one of them as the full-time whistle blew. I want to apologise to all the supporters and thank them for all their support to get us this far. I'm confident we can pick dust ourselves down and go again.

Transfers In.webp

Toni Galindo

27 year old experienced defender represents a good option as he can play any defensive position but is most suited to Right Back. Galindo joins from Hercules De Alicante on a free transfer after spending most of his career at Real Betis.

Robert Cobos

Cobos is a 21 year old left winger joining the club from Girona. The highly rated winger has the potential to develop into a quality winger but after 98 senior appearances, is still yet to find the net.

Oscar Sanchez

Sanchez is a 17 year old Attacking Midfielder who joins the U19 squad. Sanchez is a signing for the future and will be hoping to pull on a first team shirt for Zaragoza in the not too distant future.

Andrew Ledson

Ferguson worked with Andrew Ledson at Norwich and described the 19 year old as a Centre Forward with an exciting future in football. Ledson has an edge to his game and is known for standing up for his team-mates to officials. Ledson is good with both feet and took the opportunity to play Spanish football to propel his career. Ferguson says Ledson has all the tools required to be a top Striker in Spain.

Richard Donkor

21 year old Attacking Midfielder Ghanaian Donkor joins the club from Scottish giants Celtic. Donkor struggled to break into the first team at Celtic only making 11 appearances before being sent on loan to Hearts of Oak in Ghana where he got 9 goals and 9 assists in 28 appearances. Feeguson states Donkor will be part of the first team but the best will come when he settles into the country.

Ferguson lost Juan Contreras and Dani Fernandez due to their release clause being met. Contreras came through from the academy and was to be part of the first team this season but a chance to play in LaLiga was too good for him to turn down despite Ferguson's best efforts on trying to sell him his Project.
Dani Fernandez also left to play in LaLiga for Valladolid and the 18 year old right winger was a big part of Ferguson's plans. Ferguson failed to secure a replacement in the window but has Richard Alonso and Francesc Alonso both competing on the right wing.

Duncan Ferguson promoted Central Defender Hector Navarro from the B team to the first team. The 20 year old Zaragoza supporter has bided his time and is chomping at the bit to get his chance.

FERGUSON MAKES STAFF CHANGES

After hiring David Garcia as his Assistant Manager, Ferguson has also Ignacio Camacho as a coach who has spent time learning his trade in the French lower leagues. Camacho had a playing career spanning 22 years after playing for clubs like Athletico Madrid, Malaga and AC Milan. Andy Quy joins Zaragoza as a goalkeeping coach from AFC Fylde after building a solid working relationship with Duncan Ferguson. Jane Johnstone also joins the club from Dundee as the Head Physio.
