Barcelona B vs Real Zaragoza

Zaragoza started the campaign with one of the league's difficult opponents. Richard Donkor was handed his first team debut with Robert Cobos, Toni Galindo and Andrew Ledson named amongst the substitutes. Ferguson stated the importance of starting well in the league with the aspiration of achieving promotion from Spain's second tier. Abadias was screaming for the ball on the left wing and received the pass from Donkor, he played it back to Donkor and he had a shot at goal on 23 minutes which was saved easily. Abadias was involved in a collision on 28 minutes and had to be stretchered off for Robert Cobos. Cobos fired over the bar on 42 minutes after Perez cut the ball back to the edge of the box. Barcelona's pass was cut out by Gomez on the left and he played it forward to Donkor who released Zubillaga who pulled wide, he got forward and pulled the trigger on the edge of the box and his shot just went over. Zaragoza were playing well and winning the ball back as a team, the finishing was amiss and seemed to be a buit rusty in front of goal. Israel Silva made way for Juan on 73 minutes. Andrew Ledson got on the pitch with 5 minutes to go replacing Richard Donkor. Romero played the ball into the box and it looked like Miguel handled for Barcelona, the players protested and the referee awarded the penalty! Zubillaga with the chance to win the match for Zaragoza. 89th minute penalty and he sends the keeper the wrong way! Zaragoza are off the mark! It's a win for Zaragoza here in Barcelona and it's a great start to the campaign for Ferguson and his boys.
DF: I thought the lads were excellent today, winning possession and getting forward, they put the work in and we won. We may not have won it from open play but we'll take the penalty all day, we were the better team today and we want to build on that performance.

Real Zaragoza vs Granada

The first home game of the season saw the visit of Granada to La Romareda. Cobos started on the left as Chus Abadias was injured. Zubillaga led the line and Ioseba Flano came in for Richard Donkor. The opening 20 minutes were evenly matched, neither side having much of an impact, the best chance came for Zaragoza on 33 minutes when Richard Alonso won the ball back, beat three Granada players and played in Cobos who had a palmed away. Ferguson decided to make a changer on 61 minutes, Flano made way for Andrew Ledson. Despite going 4-4-2 for the final 30 minutes, Zaragoza were unable to get the goal to wein the match and it finished a disappointing 0-0.

Villarreal vs Real Zaragoza

Villarreal are a team on the decline having been relegated twice in the past twice in the past three seasons. They already had 2 wins from 2 and were hoping to make it a third against Zaragoza. Juan lasted 6 minutes until he went off with a knee injury, Israel Silva replaced the midfielder. Martinez took the ball and pumped it up field on 11 minutes, Zubillaga took it down, great pass from the keeper and drilled a shot from 20 yards that went under the keepers arm and into the net, 1-0! A few minutes later Zaragoza had a free-kick on the edge of the box. Zubillaga went for goal and curled it round the wall, 2-0! What a start by Zaragoza! Villarreal tried to get a goal back but Zaragoza were solid defensively and held the line very well. Zaragoza started well in the second half as Villarreal were caught napping, Cobos played a through ball for Zubillaga and he slotted into the bottom right corner getting his hat-trick on 47 minutes and his 100th career goal! Romero knocked it to Silva on 48 minutes and he had a pop from outside the box! 4-0! The keeper stranded to the spot! Ferguson made two changes with 20 minutes to go, Paco Sanchez came on for Robert Cobos and Richard Donkor replaced Ioseba Flano. The away fans could not believe how easily they have dismantled Villarreal. Zaragoza have certainly made a statement with this victory!
DF: That was the best I've seen this team play. The link-up play between the midfield and attack was exactly what we are looking for. The midfielders done their job exceptionally and Zubillaga was clinical. Very happy tonight!

Ferguson had brought the feel-good factor to Zaragoza with the team starting the season quite well. There was still a long way to go but the football was looking promising. Juan had a knee injury and was ruled out for two months. Israel Silva came back into midfield. Richard Donkor was international duty with Ghana and won his first International cap in a friendly against New Zealand. It was a nervous start for Zaragoza as they struggled to complete passes. Cerro got the ball into the box for Striker Pelaez to score his first of the season on 7 minutes. Farre evaded Gomez's challenge on the right and crossed in for Genaro to slot past Martinez on 17 minutes making it 2-0 to the visitors. Javi took the ball down for Zaragoza and played it forward to Romero, he passed on to Silva and he took it on his right foot, created space for himself and curled one in the bottom right corner to claw one back! Silva won it back on 32 minutes, he played it right to Richard Alonso who was having a quiet game but he took it past two and played in Zubillaga but the shot was not troubling the keeper. Ferguson seemed to have had enough of Francisco Gomez and the left back was replaced by Toni Galindo on 36 minutes. As the first half was drawing to a close, Farre was shoved in the box by Richard Alonso as the free-kick came in and the referee awarded Numantia the penalty. Santamaria had the chance to restore the two goal cushion and he did with no problem sending Martinez the wrong way. Ten minutes into the second half and it was all Zaragoza but they were up against a solid defence. Andrew Ledson came on for Flano to support the attack in the last 30 minutes. Manzella got forward down the right and played the ball in to the box, Romero nodded it towards Ledson at the far post and he cushioned it down for Zubillaga to tap in! 3-2! Galindo took the ball from Martinez and played a long ball to Zubillaga, he came forward and it was three against three, he passed to Ledson on his right and Ledson lofted the ball over the defence for Cobos who had a shot, it hit Merino and went in, 3-3! Zaragoza with a fight back! Numantia put Zaragoza under late pressure but they dealt with it very well and managed to hang on to take a point from a fantastic spectacle!
DF: I'm happy with the early season form. Four games in and third in the table. I'm looking forward to the Copa Del Ray Second Round match in a few days. A team like ours should be taking this competition seriously.
