Albacete vs Real Zaragoza
20th October 2035

=Albacete result.webp

A win for Zaragoza over struggling Albacete will see them keep the pressure on league leaders Eibar. Juan was still recovering from injury and Ferguson confirmed he would be available for next weeks match against Oviedo. Ferguson made five changes for the trip to Albacete. Ioseba Flano was given a start in midfield alongside Israel Silva. Francesc Alonso got his first leage start of the season with Richard Alonso being rested. Chus Abadias was also given a start on the left wing. It was on 10 minutes when Abadias sent the free-kick to the far post, Alonso headed across goal and Zubuillaga headed into the open net to make it 1-0! Flano needed treatment on the sidelines after 37 minutes and could not continue, he was replaced by Carlos Romero. Albacete got the ball forward towards Oscar Torres and Juan looked to have pulled him down, the referee awarded Albacete the penalty! Gonzalo placed the ball down, he went down the middle and Martinez got a hand to it but could not stop it crossing the line! 1-1. Andrew Ledson came on for Francesc Alonso in time for the kick-off. Albacete were doing a good job keeping Zubillaga out of the game, every time the ball came forward for him he had three defenders around him. Ferguson took the last throw of the dice bringing on Alvarado for Donkor but it got worse for Zaragoza when Abadias came in late on Medina and received a straight red card. It looked a harsh decision and Duncan Ferguson was livid. Zaragoza got a free-kick in the 94th minute and Alvarado surely must go for goal. He aimed towards the top right corner and it was looking goal bound but Ignacio got across and tipped it away. That was the final chance of the match and it's a disappointing draw for Zaragoza.

=Oviedo result.webp

Sunday night football came to La Romareda with Oviedo in town to play Zaragoza. Los Blanquillos had slipped to 7 points behind league leaders Eibar and would relish a win to try to close the gap. Injuries ran through the Zaragoza squad as Carlos Romero and Israel Silva were out for up to 3 weeks, Right Back Damiano Manzella was still four months away for a return and Chus Abadias was suspended for his sending off against Albacete. Igor Martinez was ruled out before kick-off and 18 year old Chus was handed his 5th start for Zaragoza. Juan took the ball short from Chus and played it forward to Donkor, he played it left to Cobos and Cobos passed inside nicely to Flano who approached the opposition box, a ball to the right for Richard Alonso to take a first time shot but he sliced it wide. It wasn't going to plan for Zaragoza, Zubillaga was isolated and had no impact on the game in the first half. Alonso got on the ball at his first opportunity in the second half and took it down the right, he tried an early cross towards Zubillaga but he was crowded out, Flano picked the ball up 30 yards out and played it left to Cobos to take the shot which the keeper done well to parry away, Alonso was on hand to get to it and he slotted to give his side the first goal of the match! Javi and Perez were solid at thr back and it allowed the team to get forward. Flano won the ball with a great tackle and passed left to Cobos, he looked up and played it into the feet of Donkor and the 21 year old rifled it home from 25 yards! Cristo Fernandez was allowed too much space on 64 minutes and he got the cross in for Bernad to head past Chus to make it 2-1. 24 minutes remained, Emilio Alvarez won the header and passed it forward to Zubillaga, he showed some magic beating two defenders and restored the two goal cushion with a cool finish! His 10th goal of the campaign and his 50th for Zaragoza! Richard Donkor had to be replaced, he was the victim of a nasty challenge and Hector Ormad was brought on to do a job as a Defensive midfielder. The job was complete and Zaragoza recorded their 6th win of the season!

DF: First half today we couldn't break them down, I had a chat with Donkor and Cobos and asked them to try something a bit different and with Flano getting in to support we managed to push them back and secured the win. Donkor is ok, he took a bit of a bang to the shin but taking him off was precautionary. We are looking forward to our first leg tie against Alaves in the cup in a few days time, they're a side with quality and can hurt us but they are coming here first and will be walking intoa bear pit in front of 40 thousand supporters who I know will do their part.

Richard Donkor missed training in the build-up but passed a fitness test to start the match. Igor Martinez was brought back into the fold for an integral cup tie. Ferguson boosted his sides chances in the pre-match press conference after Alaves were beaten at the weekend by Las Palmas saying "We can pile on the hurt in this fixture." The home side almost took the lead on 16 minutes when Flano pumped the free-kick into the box and Perez's strong header just went wide of the far post. Donkor's fitness was a concern and a half-hearted challenge saw Diallo counter attack before Galindo got over and put in a great tackle conceding the corner. Richard Alonso was involved in a robust challenge which saw him come off worse and was substituted on 43 minutes for Francesc Alonso. Richard Donkor was replaced at half-time for Andrew Ledson and it was obvious he was not in great condition in the first half. Zubillaga wasn't at his best and was struggling against a decent defence. Ferguson and David Garcia were discussing whether to change the striker with Alvarado keen to get on the pitch. He came on with three minutes to play to try and grab the one goal they need in this tie. Alvarado held off the defender and played it for Ledson to run on to, he played it wide to Cobos and his cross was deflected behind for a late corner. The corner came to nothing but Ferguson urged his team to try to keep hold of the ball. The home side played well enough and were a match for Alaves, a massive improvement in the teams performance against higher opposition.

DF: 0-0 is not a bad result, we can go to Alaves with the hope of stealing it there. Injuries are a not a concern for me at the moment, Alonso may miss the match against Eibar this weekend but we will have Silva and Romero back in about a week.

Zaragoza were rocked yesterday with the news star Striker Jose Zubillaga was ruled out for up to 12 weeks with a damaged hip. Four points separated the two teams at the top and Zaragoza were going into this tie against relegated Eibar full of confidence. Xavier Alvarado started up front in his first start of the season. There was an early warning for Zaragoza after 18 seconds when Bakero's shot skimmed the post on its way out of play. It was a quiet affair until Zaragoza were penalised on 60 minutes when Alvarez had hands on Bakero and he made the most of the penalty claim. The referee awarded it for the home side and Bakero got his fifth of the season beating Igor Martinez. Chus Abadias, back from suspension was hooked on 69 minutes for Robert Cobos. Two minutes later Juan played it to Flano who had space to get a low drilled shot away from 25 yards which found it's place in the bottom right corner, 1-1! Francesc Alonso came on for Steven Donkor for the remaining 13 minutes. It finished 1-1 with both teams not doing enough to find a winner, the result keeping Zaragoza four points behind the leaders.

6th place Leganes travelled to Zaragoza with the opportunity to move into 2nd due to how tight the top 6 is in the table. Ferguson stuck with Xavier Alvarado up top hoping the Striker can play his way into form and it was positive news to see Israel Silva named amongst the substitutes after injury. Leganes were on top inside the first 25 minutes and Ruiz was making life difficult for Juan but he was limited to shots from outside the box. Ruiz played it to Diallo on 36 minutes and he was too quick for the defence as he slotted low into the bottom corner to give the away team the lead. Francesc Alonso came on for Xavier Alvarado and Andrew Ledson moved up top. Zaragoza won a free-kick in the last ten seconds of stoppage time and Donkor sent the ball to the far post, it went out for a goal kick and summed up Zaragoza's evening. A two week break from football allowed Ferguson time to get players up to speed and the fans were delighted to see Juan and Carlos Romero link up again in midfield and Ioseba Flano in his natural position as a number ten. Rumours around the club was that Xavier Alvarado was unsure of Ferguson's coaching and there were words exchanged. Andrew Ledson was to lead the line with Alvarado subjected to the bench. Igor Martinez picked up a knock in the warm-up so Chus started the match in goal. Zaragoza seemed to be struggling still and Arteaga played in Calonge who drilled it home for his 5th goal of the season adding to the complications to Zaragoza. Juan done well to win the ball back and played in Ledson but his shot went horribly wrong and the fans grew frustrated. Four minutes into the second half, Cobos played a low ball across the box and Richard Alonso fancied it on his left foot driving it into the bottom corner to grab the equaliser! Elche kicked off and Flano was straight in to win the ball, that's what the fans like to see, he played it left to Cobos and he got forward to cross for Ledson who headed towards goal wrong footing the keeper in the process and making it 2-1! A quick turn around for Zaragoza! Ledson's first goal in a Zaragoza shirt! With 14 minutes to go Arteaga powered a header into the back of the net from Rodriguez's cross to level the scoring. Javi was bullied far too easily. Alvarez intercepted well in defence and played it wide to Alonso, he got the cross in for Cobos who arrived at the far post and he made it 3-2 with an easy finish! Wade was sent off for Elche after a disgraceful two footed challenge on Richard Alonso with a few minutes to play. 94 minutes and it was wrapped up when Cobos laid it off for Flano who struck first time with his right foot from ten yards to seal the victory!

DF: We needed that win, it keeps us in contention with teams around us picking up form. Cobos and Alonso ran the show down the flanks and it;s great to see Andy Ledson get his first goal in Spanish football. If we can beat Mallorca in a few days it gets us back on track and on the heels of Villarreal and Eibar.

Despite Chus playing well against Elche, Igor Martinez returned between the sticks with the rest of the side remaining unchanged. Something needed to change in the second half with the long balls forward going astray. Ledson was getting more and more frustrated and was not using his pace to break free of defenders. He came off on 71 minutes, giving Alvarado a chance to perform. Igor Martinez played a great ball through the centre for Flano to pick up, he played it wide to Alonso and he crossed perfectly for Alvarado but his shot was kept out by the keepers legs on 86 minutes. Alcorcon vs Real Zaragoza
1st December 2035

Carlos Romero was left out of the side for this one with Eugenio Alvarez coming into midfield. Both sides were pushing their own ambitions of promotion and there was only 18 seconds on the clock when Garcia crossed into the box for Seck to aim a header into the top right corner giving Alcorcon a dream start. Zaragoza got themselves into the game and Flano drove forward into space on 38 minutes, he touched it to Juan and then it was played out wide to Emilio Alvarez, he crossed into the box and Richard Alonso left his man to strike in the equaliser but it wasn't time to celebrate as Elizalde pumped the ball forward after the restart, Belmonte picked up the ball and found Garcia arriving in the box to give the home team the lead! Two minutes later Flano played an intelligent pass wide right to Alonso, he skipped past two but his cross was volleyed into the air by Ochoa, Cobos took the ball down and slotted with his right foot beating the keeper to make it 2-2! What a first half! Zaragoza came out on top in the opening minutes of the second half but Alcorcon kept it tight. Ledson was struggling solely up top so Alvarado came on for Flano and went upfront with Ledson. Chus Abadias replaced Robert Cobos. Javi was in the right place to clear Garcia's shot off the line with five minutes to go ands keeping his team in the game. Ledson was battling hard up the other end of the pitch and won the ball back for his team, he tried a one-two with Abadias but the return pass didn't go to plan. Alcorcon got the ball down the other end and Ochoa won his side a late corner. Belmonte crossed in and the ball bobbled loose, it fell to Fernandez at the post and he had the chance to make it 3-2 but Martinez got across to deny him, what a save! It seems a point apiece is a fair result for both teams in this epic encounter.

Copa Delay Ray Fourth Round Second Leg
5th December 2035

=Alaves result.webp

The time had come for Ferguson to try and pull off a cup upset in Spain just like he had done with Fylde when he got them to Wembley in 2032. Francisco Gomez started at left back with Emilio Alvarez was suffering with flu. Ferguson changed tact with a three man midfield of Silva, Romero and Juan. On 9 minutes the ball was crossed into the box for Alaves' Diallo but it was cleared away by Juan. The referee blew his whistle and pointed to the spot in bizarre fashion! Nobody could work out what was happening but then TV replays showed a push from Galindo on Diallo that nobody else seem to pick up on. Diallo stepped up confidently to put his team in front but his spot kick was saved by Martinez! Justice for Zaragoza! It was all Alaves but Zaragoza defended very well. Ancor sent the corner into the box, Martinez came out to punch clear but could not make full contact with the ball, Lopez Gomez took it down and passed to Fernandez Alonso who buried it to give Alaves the lead. Zaragoza got caught in possession and Francisco's pass to Diallo put him on sight of goal to make it 2-0 a minute later. Zaragoza got the ball forward from the restart and Ledson played in Alonso whose shot was turned behind for a corner. Romero took the corner and Ledson headed towards goal but it was straight at the keeper. Lamine Diallo was in fine form and he was allowed too much space to curl one into the bottom corner making it 3-0 before half-time. Ferguson had no choice but to go for it. Donkor was on for Juan just before half-time. Zaraoza were caught out again at the corner, Gomez's looping cross caught out Martinez and Barreto had a free hit on goal to make it 4-0. It was just pride left to play for and when Ledson fed the ball forward to Romero, he knocked it on for Abadias who took it inside the box and stroked it into the bottom corner to get a goal in this one-sided match. Richard Alonso brought the ball forward on 84 minutes and passed inside to Donkor who lined it up with his left and hit it beautifully to see it cannon back off the crossbar. Alavez showed Zaragoza how to do it a few minutes later when Diallo closed down the ball and hit a powerful low shot into the bottom corner making it 5-1. What a performance from Diallo. It was the end of the road for Zaragoza in what was a very one-sided second leg in Alaves.

DF: We showed a bit of steel in the last 15 minutes but the match was already done and dusted. We struggled for possession and were rightly put to the sword for a poor performance. Martinez had a good first half in goal and made some fine saves but in the second he was a bit rash. Set pieces we were dreadful and it's something we need to take a look at this week in training.

Racing Santander vs Real Zaragoza

Emilio Alvarez was still absent with a virus and Francisco Gomez suffered a slight knock in training so 26 year old Hector Ormad got a chance at left back in his first start of the season. Chus Abadias got a start on the left after a decent cameo against Alaves and Ferguson seemed fed up of Andrew Ledson and went back to Xavier Alvarado whilst Jose Zubillaga is still sidelined. Santander's two attacking options were the result of heavy challenges and seemed t be struggling in the match, Zaragoza were still wary of the attacking threat of Santander in the first half. A lack of goals and chances were Zaragoza's problem, time was running out for the away side to grab the winner. 8 minutes to go, Alonso came forward down the right, played the ball forward for Abadias who shot on his right foot but it went over the bar, that's the closest Zaragoza have come to scoring. Alonso took the ball on the right from Perez, 5 minutes to play, he passed to Donkor who helped it on to Israel Silva, Silva took a touch and aimed for the top left corner from 20 yards, what a strike! 1-0 to Zaragoza! The players kept their cool and played out the rest of the match securing a massive three points in their fight for promotion!

DF: It's good to get back to winning ways and we need to build on it. Hector [Ormad] had a solid game today at left back and done everything right to earn a place in the team. We have a problem in attack, I've got two Strikers who can't score goals and it's becoming a problem. We invested a lot of money in Andrew Ledson when we brought him here from Norwich but his return is below standard, it's the same for Alvarado and I'm expecting these lads to step up in the absence of Zubillaga. If they don't use this time to stake their claim then I can't support them.

The transfer window was to open in two weeks and Ferguson was keeping any potential signings under his belt. Rumours surrounded current players Xavier Alvarado and Juan Carlos Perez who have reportedly been hoping for a move in the winter transfer window. Zaragoza were hit with more bad news when Israel Silva was ruled out for 2 months with a hip injury leaving Los Blanquillos light in midfield. Romero and Juan were both back to full fitness and kept their partnership in the centre. Igor Martinez was called into action on numerous occasions and made some good saves to keep his side still in this match. Six Zaragoza players all picked up bookings inside the first half which could make things difficult for Ferguson in the second half. It didn't take long in the second half when Javi jumped unfairly for the header and received his second yellow card leaving Zaragoza light in defence. Ioseba Flano left the field and was replaced by Hector Navarro to play Centre Back. Zaragoza were trying to work the opening and Navarro played a nice ball forward for second half sub Ledson, he skipped past Duran with a deft touch but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper. The ten men of Zaragoza showed some guile and fought hard for a winner. The goal did not come but the team showed character to unite against the advantage.
