22nd December 2035

The last fixture of the 2035 calendar year before the winter break in Spain. Jose Zubillaga was back in individual training with the hope of being available on 6th January against Sporting Gijon. Javi was serving a one match suspension so Navarro partnered Perez in defence. Juan was getting into good positions in attacking areas but his finishing was let himself down. Ferguson had a word with him on 35 minutes to look for other options. Flano played the ball into Romero and his side footed effort struck the bar beating the keeper, Alvarado went for the follow up but was brought down inside the box, penalty! Richard Alonso sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 1-0 on 56 minutes! Fourteen minutes later Benali crossed into the box for Baena to head in his 9th of the season for Real Madrid B. With 11 minutes to go Abadias tried his luck from the free-kick and the keeper done well getting down at the post to save but Navarro reacted quickly to tuck the ball over the line, 2-1! The four extra minutes were up and the referee was still allowing the game to go on, Ramon played the ball wide for Alexandre, he was closed down by Francisco Gomez on the left side and the whistle was blown. A great win for Zaragoza and a solid performance from Hector Navarro who made a big impact in his first start of the season for Zaragoza.

DF: Hector impressed me today, he showed maturity in defence and scored the winning goal. The rest of the lads dug in and fought hard for the win. The second half we looked more dangerous and Real Madrid couldn't keep up with our tempo.

Real Zaragoza vs Sporting Gijon

Duncan Ferguson went against Dani Alves who was well more recognised in Spanish football than his Scottish counterpart but Ferguson was keen to build on recent results and continue the push for promotion in 2036. Gijon enjoyed success in 2032 being promoted to La Liga but were relegated the next season and have not been within reach since. Jose Zubillaga was not in the squad for the match with Ferguson stating he needed more training before being considered. Hector Ormad kept his place at Left Back keeping Alvarez and Gomez out due to good performances. Richard Alonso done well on 8 minutes drifting in and out evading challenges but after he crossed for Cobos at the far post his header lacked direction. Cobos did turn the ball into the net after Alonso's low cross on 14 minutes but he made his move too soon and the flag was raised. Toni Galindo played a pass inside for Alonso who took a touch into the area and then belted it past the keeper who could only watch it go past him, 1-0! What a way to celebrate your contract extension! Cobos jinxed past his marker and played a lovely ball into the box for Alvarado who held off the defender and slotted low to get his first goal of the season! A weight off his shoulders! The football was beautiful to watch, Juan with a nice ball forward for Cobos who struck the bar a minute later. Despite a few long range shots and comfortable stops for Martinez it was a solid win for Zaragoza. Defensively tight with free flowing attacking football!

DF: We're playing one game a week until the end of the season, barring any changes in the schedule. There is no excuse for fitness levels not to be where we need them to be and we need to finish strong in the second half of the season.

Elche blew the title race wide open beating leaders Eibar 3-1 on the previous day. Zaragoza fans awaited team news anxiously to find out if Jose Zubillaga was to be included and were pleased to see him name as one of the substitutes. Carlos Romero was serving a one match ban for an accumulation of yellow cards so Eugenio Alvarez came into the middle. Eugenio Alvarez passed the ball left to Cobos on 31 minutes and he crossed low into the box for the arriving foot of Alvarado to knock in to make it 1-0 and claim his second goal of the season! It's two in two for Alvarado! Ormad played a long ball forward and Cobos took it towards the penalty area, he passed to Alvarado and he tried a pass for Juan but it deflected off the defender, Juan controlled it on his right foot and unleashed towards goal to make it 2-0 on 36 minutes! The moment was due when Jose Zubillaga was getting ready to come on with 20 minutes to go and Alvarado was playing for his life when he kept a loose ball alive and crossed to the far post providing for Cobos to volley in to make it 3-0! Ferguson proceeded with the change and it was great for the Zaragoza supporters to see Zubillaga back in action.

DF: After some discussions with Alvarado he seems to have hit a bit of good form. He came to me and asked for more football and I must say he is starting to repay my faith. It's great to see Zubillaga back but he has competition now.

Real Zaragoza vs Barcelona B

Zaragoza last tasted defeat in the league on 11th November and now were only three points behind leaders Eibar. With play-offs the seasons aim, Los Blanquillos were in the running for the title putting an end to 23 years of pain. Richard Alonso was suspended for the match so Andrew Ledson started on the right and Xavier Alvarado continued in attack. Zaragoza were creating chances but were unable to finish them, the best one was Ledson's shot against the post and Alvarado being tackled in the follow up five minutes before half-time. Carlos Romero played a corner to the edge of the box for Robert Cobos to strike and forced the keeper into a spectacular save tipping it over the bar. Zaragoza tried it again but it was easy work for the keeper who pumped the ball long straight away, Galindo was the only player back and his poor clearance allowed Paul to take the ball and get forward forcing a good stop from Igor Martinez. It was time for change with 35 minutes to go and Xavier Alvarado was replaced by leading goal scorer Jose Zubillaga to a raucous reception. Both Javi and Carlos Romero had picked up bookings so Ferguson brought off Javi replacing him with Ioseba Flano on 66 minutes. There was little on offer in the closing minutes and the match ended 0-0.

POYET: WE MUST GO UP

Gustavo Poyet spoke out publicly about his former club Real Zaragoza and stated the club must achieve promotion this season. "The club should not be in this division! Simple as that! This season must be the season that we end our stay in that league and get back into the top division. Duncan is doing tremendously well, it's a big improvement on what we have had here over the years. I've been watching the games and we have the best defensive record in the league, we are capable of scoring goals, we just need more of them. Why isn't he playing with two or a front three? We have the players! Alvarado, Abadias, why aren't they playing every week? I'm not sure about Ledson, his end product is questionable. I'm prepared to give him more time before I judge him."

Poyet is one mouthy git. He got us in this spot and is jealous of El Dunco's rapport with the Zargoistas and the total cajones out football we play.

UTFZ!
