Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

AFC Fylde vs AFC Wimbledon
3rd March 2040

=Wimbledon result.webp

It was a massive game for both teams with 18th against 19th in an early battle for survival. Bytheway was unphased by recrent media pressure about his managerial credentials and urged the players to show their worth on the field. Grant Thomas led the line after getting a hattrick in the 6-3 defeat to Fleetwood with Currie and Johnson partnering in the middle. Craddock was back from injury and was rushed straight back in due to having a lack of options on the right side. It was a tough start for Fylde as Wimbledon came clone on two occasions inside the first 15 minutes, both balls almost going over the line but Breacker doing enough to get to them. Craddock came forward down the right but Williams came in with a strong tackle which seemed fine but the referee had other ideas and sent him off! Zak Knight is furious out here and it is all kicking off with the fourth official. Knight had to be told to calm down and eventually he took to his seat. The first half ended with only one real chance for Fylde, John Hutchinson forcing a save from the keeper from a low drilled free-kick. With just under 30 minutes to go, Tommy Smyth was introduced replacing John Hutchinson. The fans were encouraged by the change despite feeling frustrated all afternoon. Johnson got the ball wide to Hakeem on 82 minutes, he crossed for Craddock but he was beaten to the header, Aaron Hudson came to collect and sent it back into the box, it was cleared out and Currie went for goal but got it all wrong and skied it over the bar. Fylde were pushing for that one goal to win the game, Hakeem threw the ball to Bellairs on the edge of the box, with a short pass to Johnson and then out wide to substitute Preece who had just come on, he had space to cross but it was cleared. Milby picked up the ball and went wide to Hakeem who had men waiting in the box, it went in for Craddock but his shot hit the side netting. Time was running out, Milby took control and played a great ball wide for Bellairs, he skilfully went past Dale Burns and got into the box, his cut back was poor but Johnson came in with the shot and put it over the bar. That was it, the match ended, Wimbledon will be pleased to get a point from this but just look around at the supporters of Fylde, they are absolutely fuming. They were given it on a plate for most of this game and they could not get that one goal. Vince Bytheway's tenure as manager could soon be coming to an end.

Sky Sports were joined by Former Fylde manager Duncan Ferguson after the game.

SS: Where do you think it's going wrong for Fylde this season?

DF: I think there has been quite a few changes within the coaching staff. I left last season and Galvez was brought in as Henderson's number two but since Henderson left, Galvez and the same staff have stayed in-post and maybe there is a difference between the manager and his staff. Vince is a great leader and he doesn't deserve the stick he's getting, he's a fantastic player for the club and is really giving it his all as manager.

SS: Do you think Fylde will part ways with Bytheway?

DF: I think it will be harsh to do so, so soon but it happens. Vince still has a career at the club and will stay on as a player regardless of what happens. I think he has inherited a tough job and has not had the right support in place.

SS: If you were approached, would you think about going back for a third time? I know the fans would love that!

DF: I've been enjoying my time away from the game but it's in my blood. I love football and love being around it. I wake up most days and think about it. I feel good in myself and I've seen managers go longer than me! I'm 68 now and feel as good as I did 20 years ago! If it happened, I would consider it but Fylde have to get fully behind Vince now. He is owed that much.

Everybody's searching for a hero;

Notts County vs AFC Fylde

After Duncan Ferguson's interview with Sky Sports at the weekend, Fylde fans are clamouring at the idea of him coming back to the club to steer them to greatness. Bytheway was asked about it and mentioned he had received support from Ferguson in abundance and that he was fully behind him as manager. A decison on Bytheway's future could be imminent if the team fail to beat Notts County tonight. Stewart Milby was selected to play in midfield next to Francis Johnson. Notts County will be aiming for all three points, they were expected to bounce back to The Championship this season but they find themselves in a similar predicament to Fylde just one place above The Coasters. Jay Preece played the free-kick into the box from about 35 yards out and Jordan held off his marker to head Fylde into the lead! Just what they needed! The lead was short-lived and Notts County were getting the ball into wide areas, Harrop's ball from the left found Rhodes in the box to tap past Breacker to equalise. Johnson passed to Hutchinson who went for goal but the shot was blocked, it came back onto his left foot and he found the top corner, 2-1! Fylde need to win tonight, both Wrexham and MK Dons were winning and Fylde were drifitng to the relegation zone. The ball was played into the Fylde box and Sean Jordan obstructed Cottingham and the referee gave the penalty. Wayne Proctor sent Breacker the wrong way and made it 2-2.Tommy Smyth was on for Francis Johnson who was having a poor game. David Hill was on for Thomas, Breacker played the ball long and Bellairs flicked it on to Hill to run forward. Hill got to the edge of the box ands held off Gordon, turned and crossed into the box, Smyth was at the near post and he headed into the bottom corner! His first league goal for Fylde in the 91st minute! He taps the badge on his chest as he runs behind the goal to the travelling supporters! Fylde just have to see out the remaining minutes in stoppage time. Fylde do enough and secure a massive win at Notts County!

VB: It was about the fight and not giving in. We defended well when we needed to and scored vital goals too. To win away from home is massive against a good side and to do it in the style we did was superb to see.

Wrexham vs AFC Fylde
10th March 2040

=Wrexham resut.png

It was another huge game for Fylde as they took on Wrexham at The Racecourse Ground. Fylde are currently six points above the drop zone and a win today would be crucial to move away from the danger zone. Wrexham were in need of points in their bid for survival as the hosts were four points clear of the relegation zone so the match had a lot riding on it. Wrexham were also on a great run winning four out of their last five and the odds were stacked against Fylde. Fylde looked well up for this one in the opening minutes as they battled hard for every ball, John Hutchinson had an early chance when he knocked the ball through his legs and took a shot from outside the box that had the keeper scrambling back to cover it. Kershaw had sight of goal on 7 minutes and he struck against the post, Breacker tried to claim it but he took it over his line in calamitous fashion, what a howler for Breacker. Craddock took the ball down the right on 16 minutes, he looked up and sent in a fantastic cross to the back post, Bellairs got his head on it and beat the keeper to level! Ollie Bellairs was having a good game today but he seemed to have picked up an injury and had to go off on 53 minutes. Chris Moffatt was his replacement. Tommy Smyth was readied for the last 30 minutes replacing Francis Johnson who was on a booking. Fylde made their last change with just over 15 minutes left, Currie came on for Thomas and went up top. Fylde start to build from the back, Milby passed to Hakeem who came forward under no pressure, he got to the edge of the box and slipped in Currie whose shot was pushed away. Fylde enjoyed a good spell in the last five minues but they couldn't make anything happen. It's a draw at The Racecourse Ground in a game that could have went either way but Wrexham looked like they were there for the taking in the last 15 minutes.

=Ebbsfleet result.png

Ebbsfleet were practically relegated sitting at the foot of the table 16 points adrift of safety. Fylde were still not out of the woods but were unbeaten in their last three so they had a glimmer of hope in a must-win fixture. David Hill and Jonathan Currie were away on International duty and it was big news for new signing John Hutchinson who made his debut for Republif of Ireland in a 2-0 win over Romania. The only change from the draw against Wrexham was Greene in for Hutchinson. Ebbsfleet put Fylde under pressure from the corners but it was well dealt with by Barrett at the back. Barrett came close to scoring at the other end when Preece sent in the corner to the six yard box but he headed wide. Fylde got an early corner after half-time and Preece played a fizzing ball in, Thomas appealed to the referee for being held back and the referee awarded Fylde the penalty! Stuart Greene went over to get the ball but Thomas wanted it instead. There was a conversation around it and Thomas was the one who placed the ball down. Can he make it 7 out of 7? Thomas went left and it was saved! The keeper parried it! The Ebbsfleet players were delighted with their keeper. Fylde picked up the tempo, Preece with the throw to Craddock who took it on the chest and crossed into the box, Bellairs went in with the header and Nixon tipped it over the bar, quality save. Bellairs came forward a few minutes later, Thomas needed to move into space but he played it through for Craddock instead who found the top left corner with his left foot, 1-0 to Fylde! The deadlock broken! Both Fylde Centre Backs were on a booking so Bytheway made the decision to take off Sean Jordan for John Tomaszko on 60 minutes. The introduction of Tommy Smyth ten minutes later was well received as he replaced Stewart Milby in midfield. Craddock passed to Smyth who was on the edge of the box and he took a shot which the keeper done well with to keep out. Fylde were in control but needed that second goal. Stuart Greene was having a good game, he was involved in everything and could be what Fylde have missed. Fylde were delighted to hear the final whistle and get the three points. They should have won by more but it is a step in the right direction.

VB: It would have been nice to get a few goals today but three points is three points and we are moving forward as a club. The season has been a tough learning curve so far but the response from the players has been fantastic and I've learnt we don't need to complicate football. At times I tried to be too smart but I've been given a few pointers from Duncan Ferguson who reminded me to keep it simple and so far it's working.

Southend United vs AFC Fylde
24th March 2040
=Southend result.png

Fylde went into this game nine points clear of the drop zone and were looking more likely to secure safety in League One. This was not what they were hoping for at this stage of the season with ambitions of promotion at the start of the campaign. John Hutchinson and Tommy Smyth were back from International duty representing Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland respectively. Stuart Greene kept his place in the side after a decent display last time out and Grant Thomas started up front with David Hull still away with England U19's. It was a calamitous start for Fylde when on 8 minutes their defence were all over the place, Edinburgh strolled forward and passed into the box to Patterson who had time to lob it over his head back into the box for Adcock to allow it to bounce before hitting a half volley into the bottom corner. Craddock passed inside to Milby who lined up the shot but took a nice touch away from his marker and played it to Thomas who turned and tried to find the right corner but the keeper got a hand to it but it went in! 1-1 after 15 minutes! Southend restored their lead five minutes later when Harratt sent in the free-kick to the box and Seal's back header deceived everyone and hit the top corner. Bellairs ran forward with the ball cutting inside and passing to Smyth on the edge of the box who hit it first time and it was inches wide. The second half kicked off and Southend immediately hit Fylde for a third when Seliearts came forward and hit a powerful swerving shot that went in off the post, Breacker was rooted to the spot. Bytheway made the decision to move Smyth further upfield behind Thomas and Greene coming back into midfield. Aaron Hudson came on at Right Back for Jay Preece who was playing poorly. Zanelli-Wilton came down the left and crossed into the area to Adcock who held off Jordan to beat an on rushing Breacker making it 4-1 on 66 minutes. Stuart Greene was having a disappointing day and was replaced with John Hutchinson. Hutchinson had an impact and his long ball forward to Thomas down the left was nicely hit, he knocked it back to Bellairs and he came forward to the edge of the box and went for a dipping shot that was tipped over. Smyth took the corner but it was cleared away, Hutchinson took control and passed back to Smyth who crossed again but it was cleared, Hutchinson with it again and he smashed it through the crowd of bodies and through the keepers hands to make it 4-2 on 85 minutes. Smyth came forward on 89 minutes crossing for Craddock who tried to get it in for Thomas but it was cleared, Smyth passed to Milby who worked hard to keep it and hisa shot hit the top of the bar and went over. It ended with a win to Southend and Fylde struggled defensively to contain them leaking 4 goals. It was Bytheway's 20th game in charge and his ninth defeat. It's not looking good for Vince and we will see if he is still here next season.

AFC Fylde vs Charlton Athletic
30th March 2040

=Charlton result.png

Six games to go and six points clear of relegation, Fylde needed to secure safety sooner rather than later. Francis Johnson, Jonathan Currie and David Hill were back from International duty and Johnson started in midfield next to Tommy Smyth. Fylde were in control and were playing well, Smyth was unlcuky with his long ball forward on 32 minutes but Thomas picked it up and had a shot which stung the hands of the keeper. The resulting corner never came to anything, Johnson closed the ball down and passed forward to Hutchinson who got a lucky bounce off a defender and drilled it low into the bottom right corner! He's certainly finding his feet in Fylde colours! Jay Preece whipped in a good corner which found Ollie Bellairs but his header was cleared off the line and the keeper had it covered. Preece crossed in from the free-kick and Barrett nodded it down to Bellairs but he was offside and the flag was raised. David Hill came on for Thomas with 13 minutes to go. Jonathan Currie came on for John Hutchinson and retreated into midfield to try to hold the lead with 5 minutes to go. Hart had a great chance in stoppage time to equalise but Breacker was alert to save the shot. The game wasn't over and Fylde were sitting back, Bremner got the ball forward into the box for Couch to take down and he tried his luck with a daisy cutting shot and it found the bottom corner, a late equaliser for Charlton! That must be the last kick of the game. That will feel like a defeat for Fylde who controlled the whole game but lost all three points in the blink of an eye.

AFC Fylde vs MK Dons
2nd April 2040

=MK Dons result.png

The Easter Bank Holiday Monday saw a visit from MK Dons to Mill Farm. After conceding so late to Charlton last time out, Bytheway was clear on his instructions for his side to see out games. Jonathan Currie came into the side replacing Francis Johnson in midfield and a loss to MK Dons would certainly put Fylde in trouble closing the gap by three points at the bottom. Fylde were trying to make something happen with Smyth finding key passes, he played in Preece down the right who put in a good cross to Bellairs but his marker done enough to see his header go over the bar. Smyth was controlling the tempo in midfield and seemed to becoming the player the fans have all wanted to see, he passed right to Preece and he crossed, this time Bellairs got on to the volley with his left foot and put it into the back of the net on 21 minutes! The goal saw an instant fight back from The Dons and Breacker will kick himself for fumbling the cross that allowed former Fylde Striker Russell Carey tap in to equalise. MK Dons fighting back ad they try to beat relegation from League One. Neil Hakeem was caught napping and lost the header in the air to Deakin who won the ball back inside the Fylde half, he got the ball forward to Kay who managed to hold off Barrett and beat Breacker to make it 2-1 on 28 minutes. MK Dons were forced into defending their lead on the stroke of half-time as Thomas tried to find the equaliser but his shot was blocked. The first change came on 50 minutes and it was no surprise, Grant Thomas made way to the bench being replaced by David Hill and he did not look happy about being taken off. Fylde made their last two changes with 20 minutes to go, Smyth was replaced by Johnson and Hutchinson went off for Greene. Deakin came forward for MK Dons and Hakeem tried to keep up pace, he put in a tackle from behind conceding the foul and the referee called Hakeem over, it wasn't looking good and he brandished the red card reducing Fylde to ten men. Fylde were not deterred and Greene was driving Fylde forward, getting on the ball from deep and making things happen, he played in Hill and his shot was tipped behind. Fylde had 61% possession and failed to make it count, the final whistle was blown and the players were booed off the pitch, the banners in the stands asked for change at mangement level and it was not looking good for Bytheway and Fylde.

VB: We know we are in a fight and each game from here is a must win. MK Dons got a massive three points and all credit to Deakin who tore us apart down the right side. They defended as a unit and done their job. I don't think Hakeem should have been sent off, it was a yellow at best. I'll be looking again at it but it was near the technical area and I've seen much worse.

NO PUNCHES PULLED WITH DANNY ROWE

The Board made another ridiculous decision appointing Bytheway as manager. He's 34 years old and he has no experience, he will take us down because I can't see a win in the last four games. Bury, Oldham, Gillingham and Swindon. Both Oldham and Swindon are fighting for promotion so I can't see a win there. Can we beat Bury and Gillingham? It's too hard to say because this team have no idea they are in a relegation battle. It has came out of nowhere and we got sucked in. We have an owner who believes we are too good to go down and sold one of brightest talents in January. Then instead of replacing Henderson with a manager with pedigree, he appoints our Captain to try to get us into the play-offs but he capituates and takes us towards the bottom! If we go down, this team will not come straight back. They have not got the mentality for it. Potter made two mistakes, hiring our two best players as managers and not doing enough to persuade our best ever manager to take the job when Henderson left. If Ferguson would have been approached, he would have taken it. I know that because he has said enough for me to believe he would. The team has no confidence and is staring at relegation in the face. We have to beat Bury away from home, otherwise the task becomes too difficult and we are gone.
